Overall very organized space and the customer service is sweet. The selection is limited although there are many pieces of clothing. It is mostly landfill clothes that are looking for a second life. I was able to find one pair of pants I wanted to buy. The prices for shoes are below $18 and the pricing is pretty average. The pants were 6.99 and sweaters are 12.99. read more

I used to love this thrift store, but the last 3-4 times I've come here I've just had to laugh at their prices. Want to pay $8.99 for a 40 year-old extension cord, when a brand new one is $6 on Amazon? How about $40 for a shirt that retails for $24? I'm not sure why the rating for this store is so low. I did have to treasure hunt for about an hour, but that's pretty normal for most thrift stores I go to. Make sure to keep your phone handy to look up and compare brand prices if you want to make sure you're getting a good deal. I love that Southern Thrift does 50% off sales of certain colored tags during the week. I went when purple and green tags were on sale, meaning two of my items were reduced to $6 and $2. My total amount for 4 items came out to about $32! Insanity. I managed to find a beautiful printed dress from Mata Traders, two skirts from Mata Traders, and a knit top from Maeve (a brand stocked by Anthropologie). Just for reference, Mata Traders skirts retail for full price $60-80 and are typically on sale online for about $35 via the official website. My skirts were about $10-12 - quite the deal. My dress was only $6 given the 50% special (for reference: $60-90 dresses). That is pretty amazing. I wouldn't have known about this brand unless I had previously shopped on Modcloth and A Thousand Villages. I was surprised to see several items from Mata Traders at this location, so be careful to look through all the different racks. As I scanned through the knits, I saw several 100% wool, cashmere, and quality material sweaters from brands like Talbots and Ann Taylor. I suggest trying these on, as a few had minor holes (which, with a needle and thread, are easily repaired). For $2-8 an item, this is an amazing deal. If you are into the oversized men's blazer-as-overcoat look, this site stocks several different blazers in the men's section. You could opt to cut out the shoulder pads to complete the look. There's plenty of parking, and staff is quite helpful. If you need them, you can get a fitting room (but you're limited to 6 items at a time). Yikes, they have seriously gone down hill since I first started coming here. Too many recent drop-ins have left me empty handed (usually I can find ONE thing), causing me to realize they're just not what they were. This location specifically has priced some of their items outrageously. Target brand clothing (which they have alot of: Who What Wear, Knox Rose, Wild Fable) should not be selling for the same price it would be on clearance AT Target. Also, today I saw way too many unknown brand shirts selling around the $12-$18 rage. That's absurd. I can go to Goodwill where every shirt, regardless of the brand is sold at a flat rate of $4.99. It's one thing marking up well known brands but it's another thing marking up random clothing with no strategy or understanding of fashion. Awful awful awful. *shakes head* To Southern Thrift's credit though, you can still find plain ol' solid colored t-shirts or $1.50-$3 which is the cheapest it gets. Two colors discounted (see the sign up by check out) today! Scored on some great pieces,yesss on sale! The check out guy was suppoperrrr friendly! It's a mix between a good will and thrift market! Lots of little finds! If your wearing a backpack CHECK IT in the front! In fact it's better to find the best deals! My friend scored on items for her kids, (new and gently used), her, and hubby! It was a great stop before our Hatti B (walking distance) experience. They opened at 9:30am so we started early on a Monday, it was clean and organized. read more

I usually go to 2 other Southern Thrifts on the East side of town. This one is a lot alike for the most part... same variety. The building is kind of a shotgun building... meaning long and narrow. It's not as open-feeling as the other stores and feels slightly cramped with all the stuff inside. Southern Thrift likes to use the spaces on top of their clothing racks to house things like housewares, etc. They have a great book selection. Seem to have a good amount of mens clothes. Not much furniture here if that's what you're looking for. Best for clothes. Clothes are sized on the rack and pretty well marked. read more

Until recently, I thought the only Southern Thrift was the one on Gallatin. When I discovered they have a branch on Charlotte, I decided I had to check it out. While this one is pretty similar to the one in East Nashville, it's much, much larger. It's practically the size of a K-Mart, and their selection is virtually endless. Southern Thrift has pretty extensive men's, women's and children's departments, and, while I'm sure there are some real treasures in there somewhere, the prospect of looking through the entire men's selection seemed a bit daunting. They sell ancient computers and televisions all for less than $100, and their toy and electronic selections were surprisingly large. Much like the East Side branch, this Southern Thrift seems to specialize in the bizarre. They have several model ships, ceramic puppies and one of the coolest velvet paintings I've ever seen (it's some sort of jungle cat, but it unfortunately cost $40, so I passed). There is a huge collection of sofas at the front of the store, each of which costs about $50. If I wanted to buy a very cheap (and wonderfully tacky) living room set, I'm certain this would be the place. The sales counter in the middle of the store (like the one on Gallatin) is strangely very tall. As you check out, the person ringing you up towers about four feet over you. The parking situation is also a bit strange, and when you leave their lot, you'll find you have to pass through a garage/tunnel/cove that puts you out on a one-way alley behind the store. Regardless, Southern Thrift is a deserving addition to my list of crazy thrift stores to peruse. read more

We were excited to discover another thrift store in the area of our "sight seeing" so we pulled a quick right, turned off the engine and walked in. Something to note, you will need to leave your bag (though they say not your purses--I was asked to leave mine and when I came to get it back it was laying on the floor), they are trying to make sure that none of their product walks away without a receipt. The store itself is filled to the max with a million different things, the majority of which is clothing. Which was great for us because that was what we were looking for! Some of their stuff was a little overpriced for a thrift store and the quality of some of the items--BUT if you are down for an adventure in discovering something worth the search, I think this would be a great place to look through. It might take some time, but it also might be worth it. We didn't have the time and didn't find what we were looking for, but if you live in the area I could see the potential of looking through! read more

High quality used clothes for cheap: check. interesting blazer selection: check. Crockery and corningware ever-present for, like, a buck: check. Interesting tchotchkes: double check. You have to be willing to sort through the crap, but if you are patient, you will find good stuff here. I like it better than schmancy thrift stores, because Southern Thrift has no illusions about its role in the world, unlike other stores that charge an arm and a leg for used clothes. It has been years since I've been to a Southern Thrift, but I wanted to post here what a lot of people seem to not know. While Goodwill can have cheap prices because they accept donations, Southern Thrift actually buy a lot of their items from people and Non-Profit organizations in an effort to help the community. The prices are higher because they have to actually pay for the things they are selling (just as any other retail). While they might not come out and say it because they are nice people, I think it's good for others to know what your money is going to when you buy from this store. It's not going in some fat CEO's pocket. read more

Southern Thrift is usually the highlight of my thrift trips down Charlotte. They're large enough to fit a lot of variety of everything from clothes to toys to housewares and furniture. I've found some real gems here including an elephant-shaped tea pot, a Kurt Cameron in a leather jacket poster, and amazing vintage lingerie. LIttle treats and surprises are tucked everywhere in this store so come ready for diligent browsing. Like Goodwill and others they always have some color of tag that is on sale so make sure to look for that too. Unfortunately, they discontinued the practice of bagging all their old costume jewelry as opposed to selling it individually. You would try to peer through the $7 bags for possible treasures. I've found some great stuff in those (usually mixed in with a bunch of junk, but that's the fun). read more

I know I already gave Southern Thrift a one star review, but I was in desperate need of a dress for a family Memorial Day cookout and stopped in, hoping to find something. Luckily, I did. Beautiful dress, right size. As soon as my hand was on the hanger, the announcement system announced they would be closing in five minutes. So I walked to the counter and asked what the return policy was. I was told there were no returns. I asked then where the changing rooms were. The guy behind the register showed me where they were. I started to walk away when a manager walked up. "Sorry ma'am, there isn't enough time. We close in five minutes and our registers automatically shut down at close. Nothing we can do about it." ....... I turned to the guy behind the counter who shrugged. "Would you like to purchase it?" he asked. Are you kidding? First of all, if your going to lie to a customer (obviously so) about your late 90's version of cash registers "automatically" shutting down on the hour (what happens if at 9:00 there's still two more people in line?) at LEAST collaborate with your staff so you are all telling the same lie! I handed the dress to the cashier and said, "Forget it; I'll take my money somewhere else." He did look apologetic. I was venting to a friend of a friend who worked at Southern Thrift a couple of years ago and talking about how I was contemplating calling upper management. She laughed at me and said, "L [the guy in charge] will back up the same lie and won't do a thing. They don't care about the customer. Just don't shop there." Good advice. Wish I had listened to my gut last time I came in here. read more

Worst thrift store you'll ever go to. First off they are over priced for the most dingy clothing I've ever seen. Then was offered 1/2 off a broken chest. It's utterly disgusting to price a target brand dress for 20 dollars. Or a stained shawl for 12. 99. Your staff obviously have no clue how to price item or knowledge of brands. Who prices used clothing at new retail price? Also no discounts for military, student, teacher and every other thrift store does happily offer such discounts. Not to mention your locations don't excuse the pricing as they are not in prime locations. It's sad that a thrift store is motivated by greed to price items like that. It's highway robbery. I'm not much for wearing used clothing, so I don't really shop here for clothes. I've tried looking but I just never seem to see something cool. I have found some great things for costume parties here though. What I really like about Southern Thrift though is the first part of the store. Here they house the furniture and small appliances. There are some really great deals on kitchen gadgets. I found a sandwich maker, which is still going strong, for $3 and an espresso machine, also $3. You have to go in often to find good furniture, but they often have couches and chairs that are not horribly ugly for decent prices. Also, check out the electronics: monitors, keyboards, speakers, cables - all at cheap cheap prices. read more

I'm only giving it 2 stars because of how they treat the customers when it's closing time. Twenty five years ago, when I managed a record store in Charlotte Square, we didn't KICK our customers out at the closing hour. We would shut off the music and we knew the customers could hear us talking about closing and if they stayed too late, we would casually go around and ask could they try to wrap up their purchases because we needed to close but we waited patiently for our customers to finish their purchases because we wanted their business. At Southern Thrift AND at Music City Thrift (which says their registers shut down at 9 and if you walk up there with a basket full at 9:01, they will NOT ring you up, although I do know the manager can reopen the registers, (if they really do shut down at closing time), but Southern Thrift will start announcing they are closing in 30 minutes, then give another blast at 8:45 and at about 5 til, they will start shutting off the lights so you may be stuck back in the store in the dark. That's not a customer service tactic that I care for AT ALL. I know they have posted hours and Lord, I'm not going to stay until 9:30, but I may have JUST put my hands on what I came for and will get to the counter to check out as soon as I can, being mindful of your closing hour. To their favor, I've found the staff friendlier than in years past as I have shopped at the Charlotte Pike location for 20 years now. They've had some friendly staff in the past, who seem very apologetic when you take two pillows up, that look the same, that match exactly, and one has lost its tags so they can't sell it to me. WHAT? Can a manager override this policy when you have two identical items, that are in the identical shape? I've seen on of the store managers do it at another location but I'm not going to say in case he were to have to stop. I can hold up a single flower stem, unpriced, and he will tell how much to charge. The other store say no they absolutely cannot sell and it has to go back downstairs for the pricing people. Upper management is scared they are going to sell a jewel at the wrong price but come on.. You wouldn't hold the two pillows I wanted to purchase until the other one was purchased, so why not just give me the same price of the other one because it's a freaking throw pillow. I do understand why they do it, people remove tags hoping when they get to the register, the clerk will charge them a lesser price but I feel like the manager, who should know his staff in the pricing area, and be confident enough to let him do some things. I used to feel like they thought everyone was a thief, but I understand some of the logic now, just not a reasonable items. Come on, we all know the items that might could be an antique gem worth hundreds, we're not asking for prices on these things and I could understand them wanting to take it back to a pricer but especially during the day, it should be able to get a price while you are there. There are days they do pricing and they announce those, but someone should be there MOST of their opening hours that could price a pair of jeans that you find that fit you PERFECT and are exactly the brand you want, and come on, they might be Chic jeans for heavens sake. Not talking about a 7's pair of blue jeans but they should be able to price those too, if the price happens to fall off. Southern Thrift pricing is also frustrating. I've found a stained target t shirt for $7 and a long black velvet girls dress from GAP for $5, and any day, the same dress could be priced at $15.99. On things like that, if it's not half price, I decide if I'm going to wait a couple weeks and see if it goes on sale or not. I've seen a Lane Bryant shirt I've wanted priced at $50, and I've seen it on sale for $25 and it still didn't sell. HELLO, it rarely sells at Lane Bryant for $25 much less $50. I've seen that shirt go through two sales and still remain. At the same time, sometimes that Lane Bryant shirt will be better priced but it will definitely be priced more than a White Stag shirt. I don't shop Goodwill for dresses because they price all the dresses the same, which is great, but it's just more than I want to pay, and can't remember the price but either $8 or $12 for a 2 piece. If it's the sale color, good deal, but rarely can I afford more than 1 dress at $12. Especially because it might be an Old Navy sun dress that I know would be like $6.99 or maybe less at Southern Thrift. Sell me a Lane Bryant classic outfit I can wear for years for $12 but not one that isn't. Southern Thrift also has a good selection of sale items and I always LOVE their selection, its just the prices, but remember Southern Thrift is a FOR PROFIT thrift store, and I'd like to think those Sylvan Park residents are dropping their items off at Goodwill, two blocks further down the road. And they finally have a bathroom. I LOVE their SELECTION, just not their policies. read more

They start closing the store and trying to get people out 40 minutes before the posted closing time and will loudly/openly complain in front of customers. Southern Thrift is an overwhelmingly large thrift store - too much for me to look through everything in one trip. All of the furniture is at the front of the store, and included some tables, chairs and sofas ($30-$130) of varying attractiveness. Some of these items were missing knobs or wearing through (and were priced accordingly), while others actually looked presentable. They also have the usual thrift store hodgepodge of framed prints, plates, cups, toys, books, and random junk. But to the right of the register you can find some kitchen appliances, phones, keyboards, and mouses, that might be useful. Of all the thrift stores on Charlotte Pike, Southern Thrift came closest to meeting my expectations: a big no-frills store lit by fluorescent lights ,with few treasures and a bunch of stuff that nobody wants, all at very low prices. Tip: The "vintage" rack to the front left of the women's clothing section has a much better treasure to trash ratio than the rest of the clothing racks. read more

Recently visited this location for the first time. I was looking for something in particular (certain style shirt). The selection is great, lots of name brands women clothing--Ann Taylor, Loft, LL Bean, Banana, and Gap. Of course it could change. I gave this location 3 stars for two reasons: (1) the employees weren't super friendly (weren't very courteous with the clothing carts they were using to put clothes out) and (2) their clothing seemed to be priced with a bias for brand. For example: Goodwill has dresses for $7.99 and t-shirts for $2.79. Dress, shirt and jean prices at Southern Thrift Store varied and it seemed to be based on brand (target dress for $5 and Banana Republic dress for $20). I'll definitely visit again in the future, but was disappointed with the lack of pricing structure. read more

If you're looking for true thrift store prices (not inflated "flea market/antique mall" prices), Southern Thrift is the place to go. Like most thrift stores, it's not bright and shiny, but it wasn't gross either (what do you expect when you're looking for housewares for $1 or less?). This store does seem a little more cramped than the one on Gallatin Pike, so if you want a little more room to look, head there. read more
