I stopped by here yesterday with my family for dinner. We had ridden the Strasburg Railroad earlier…read morein the day and were looking for a place to eat when I fired up Yelp and found the Tavern by Spring House Brewing. It is located on East Main Street in downtown Strasburg. The inside consists of a large main room with an L shaped bar, a number of TVs, and then a second dining room off to the side. Since no one was seated in the second room and we had twin four year olds with us, we chose that space. Unfortunately the TV in that room was broken, so we were not able to watch the Steelers game that was on. Aside from that, the room itself had a cozy and slightly eclectic feel. There was a decorated Christmas tree lit up in the corner near the staircase which gave the space a warm seasonal vibe. The walls were decorated with brewery signs and beer themed banners, and a bright yellow decorative mantel stood out against the darker wall colors. Overall it felt casual and welcoming and worked well for a family dinner. For dinner on this evening I went with the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak while my wife chose the K Town Mac Bowl. The menu described my wife's dish as three cheese cavatappi pasta with smoked pork slaw, Korean BBQ drizzle, sesame seeds, and scallions. My sandwich was described as smoked chicken, American cheese, buffalo sauce, gorgonzola, onion frizzles, ranch drizzle, and a hoagie roll. I thought my sandwich ended up being good, especially since it was chock full of chicken. The hoagie roll was toasted and buttered nicely and added a good crunch, which the onion frizzles helped reinforce. The gorgonzola added a nice pungent pop of flavor. While I did get some buffalo flavor, I definitely could have used more. Because of that, the sandwich was a little on the drier side despite having cheese, buffalo sauce, and ranch drizzle. My fries were seasoned and had a nice texture, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I decided to go with a flight here. At Spring House Brewing, a flight consists of four beers and I chose the Cucumber Salamander, Backroads Shadows, Daily Planet, and Love and Rockets. The Love and Rockets ended up getting mixed up and I was instead served Grease the Poles. I started with the Cucumber Salamander, which is a sour. It was a bit tart right from the start and that carried through to the finish, with a little extra pucker at the end. Up next was Backroads Shadows, a lager with a crisp, clean start before the malts came through on the finish. This felt like a really good easy drinking beer. Third was Daily Planet, an IPA that had citrus up front followed by a solid hop presence that carried through the finish. Last was Grease the Poles, a pale lager that started off very clean before finishing with some lighter hop notes. Out of the bunch, the Cucumber Salamander was definitely my favorite. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Our food and drinks were good, and I would be interested in trying more of their beers.

Looked like there was only 2 servers for the entire place which was busy. My husband liked his chili, so that's the two star review. He said it had a lot of flavor. I had the brisket sandwich which was very small for the price with not a lot of meat. The meat had no flavor at all. Was not served with the au ju, which I had to ask for. Unfortunately, the au ju did not make it any better. The Cole slaw had a good flavor and was not sweet, so that was the best part of the food.

Their selection of cans is not as large as it used to be in the early days, but I think that's because they actually have more taps now. So three of the refrigerators now have kegs in them rather than cans. They also still have a nice little food menu with pizzas and sandwiches and things and I hear that the edamame hummus is outstanding. In fact, my sister-in-law brought back two containers of it to go for a friend in Connecticut who loves it so much I actually bought a 12 pack of Lawson's Little Sip to go. They do have a small kind of tight parking lot to the right of their store, but otherwise you can usually find some street parking in the summer they have tables out front.

Beer selection was outstanding and the prices were very reasonable considering the craft selections. We were heading to dinner later, but wanted to try some of the food. The French onion soup was outstanding. Probably one of the best I've ever had. The pizza was also solid and the perfect snack size. Definitely check this place out if you are in the area or staying at the Arts Hotel.

When we were seated, we were given the prix fixe food menu but never provided with a drink menu. We were served water, but our waitress didn't ask if we'd like cocktails, wine, or any featured Valentine's drinks. For a special occasion dinner, that felt like a major oversight. The bigger issue, though, was the food. Several courses were noticeably undercooked and difficult to enjoy. The carrot salad had hard, undercooked carrots and a very bitter sauce that overwhelmed the dish. The grilled Badger Flame beets were also undercooked and had an unpleasant flavor. The beet risotto was firm and lacked the creamy consistency you expect from a properly prepared risotto. The halibut tasted overly fishy and seemed undercooked in the center. For $75 per person on Valentine's Day, we expected a polished, thoughtfully executed experience. Instead, the meal felt poorly prepared and not worth the price. It was an unsatisfying way to spend what should have been a special evening. The ambiance was very nice but the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired.

Owners Evita and Solise have created a space that shows appreciation to the culture, while celebrating the stories of people of African diaspora through literature and art. For those who are reading this and are from the DMV area think of Busboy & Poets but with a little twist. So what's the twist you ask? They offer beer and wine through a self-serve tap system. Meaning you receive a wristband that allows you to help yourself to a variety of local beers and wine. Each is charged by the ounce and is charged to your tab at the end of your visit. An added bonus is two of the wines that were available were made in-house; the Concord Jungle and Mizz Education. We enjoyed the Mizz Education which is a sweet and refreshing Moscato so much we ended up taking two bottles home with us. Let me just say this, I've been to my fair share of restaurants for brunch and the food at Concrete Rose hands down is the top 5 best food I've ever had. We tried a variety of options which include the Salmon Avocado Toast, Soul of the Sea and Chicken wings with concord bbq sauce. All were seasoned, cooked and plated to perfection. Whew Lord just thinking about those crab cakes with herbed garlic butter and remoulade sauce has me thinking about taking a road trip to get some more. Ambiance, food and service are all top tier at A Concrete Rose. Do yourself a favor and check them out. There's so much there for you to see and try! I can promise you one thing, you won't be disappointed. Evita and Solise you've outdone yourselves on this one! So proud of what you both have accomplished.
