There were quite a number of interesting things to look at and they have a respectable assortment of tiny collectible knickknacks scattered around. If you are out on River Road this could be a good stop before heading over to Rivershack Tavern.

I got a tip on River Road Flea Market from an acquaintance, who became an acquaintance because I was asking about where to get furniture. Of all the stores and spots she recommended, this was my favorite and definitely the best. It was a little difficult to find because their address online says the city's name is Jefferson and my GPS only recognizes Jefferson as a parish. Now I know it's in New Orleans city, and not all the far away at all. It's located literally right by the river, separated by a grassy bank and the levee. The building is HUGE. It's like a warehouse divided into little rooms, all of which are decorated with amazing antiques and thrifty finds for a fairly reasonable price (about 125 for a desk-sized table, 150 for a wardrobe or dresser). It's not the cheapest spot, but the quality of the merchandise makes up for it. They get most of their merchandise from estate sales, apparently, and the eclectic collection certainly reflects that. Several of the rooms are themed: jewelry, records, children's furniture and toys (there was an amazing vintage rocking chair that I would buy just to anticipate having children... except I'm not), books, etc. Outside in a small gated area, they sell specialty Mexican pottery, most of which is large and would be appropriate for a yard, and wrought iron benches and trellises. I purchased a vintage bracelet for $5, and I can't wait to go back and actually purchase furniture, once I'm moved in! Just don't beat me to it; there's a table and a bedframe that I've already got my eye on...

In my cargo shorts and T-shirt and guzzling a large jug of water, the proprietor must have thought we were there for some free air conditioning. Bad call, Mr. Proprietor. Yes, we were hot and sweaty. Yes, the air conditioning felt good. And yes, I have money to spend. Yes, I collect antique furniture. And if you had taken the time to even acknowledge me, you might have found out that I've gone so far as to use dendrochronology to authenticate a few of my pieces. Serious collectors come in all shapes and sizes, and it's dangerous to judge people that walk through your door like that. The pieces I saw in our brief walkthrough looked to be good quality, but this shop isn't the only game in town and you can definitely find better service.

So much beauty, and knowledge, and passion. These guys are effervescent, and a relief from the sad state of sales these days. You come to Magazine street hoping to stop in these antique shops, and this is one of them. I think…read moreI had been here previously, and enjoyed my experience. But this time around, it was just a bunch of poorly curated junk. The way things were displayed was poor, just unorganized, requiring you to dig around. It feels overwhelming going in here. Previously, I felt like I was on a treasure hunt, but this time around, I was feeling anxiety going through all the stuff. They do have old typewriters and old phones though, at decent price (around $115-175 for typewriters, and $25 for the old phones). I thought those were the coolest items. But honestly, they didn't even have the cute charm I was hoping for. Some of the typewriters did have handles, which was great if you wanted to carry it on your flight back home. But, you couldn't take the lid off...just a bummer. Will forever continue to search for the vintage typewriter and phone.

The few that were in there were pretty expensive. But because I'm good at digging around, I did manage to find two matching pieces in a couple of stacks on the floor that were inexpensive. Such a small win in such a big store though. It's still a cool place to hang around in for a couple hours.
