I've been reading about how New Orleans was voted the number one spot in the nation for flea markets; so how come Yelp is lacking on reviewing them? This is why a NOLA Elite is needed... I got a tip on River Road Flea Market from an acquaintance, who became an acquaintance because I was asking about where to get furniture. Of all the stores and spots she recommended, this was my favorite and definitely the best. It was a little difficult to find because their address online says the city's name is Jefferson and my GPS only recognizes Jefferson as a parish. Now I know it's in New Orleans city, and not all the far away at all. It's located literally right by the river, separated by a grassy bank and the levee. The building is HUGE. It's like a warehouse divided into little rooms, all of which are decorated with amazing antiques and thrifty finds for a fairly reasonable price (about 125 for a desk-sized table, 150 for a wardrobe or dresser). It's not the cheapest spot, but the quality of the merchandise makes up for it. They get most of their merchandise from estate sales, apparently, and the eclectic collection certainly reflects that. Several of the rooms are themed: jewelry, records, children's furniture and toys (there was an amazing vintage rocking chair that I would buy just to anticipate having children... except I'm not), books, etc. Outside in a small gated area, they sell specialty Mexican pottery, most of which is large and would be appropriate for a yard, and wrought iron benches and trellises. I purchased a vintage bracelet for $5, and I can't wait to go back and actually purchase furniture, once I'm moved in! Great spot to find vintage items of a wide variety. Like a lot of these spots, there are a lot of different booths within the store and each booth has slightly different stock. The place is not so crowded that you're afraid to move, but it is pretty full...especially some of the display cases. Still I felt safe bringing my youngest nieces with me AND they didn't knock anything over. The staff is polite and helpful but definitely let you browse until you need assistance. You can definitely spot this location along River Road because it has metal animals outside in the fenced yard. Some how the baby goats really speak to me, but they also have chickens, a giraffe, flamingos, and a variety of others. read more

Nice selection of furniture, pretty reasonably priced. I wasn't too impressed with the other stuff - the jewelry was all rather cheap-looking, and the purses seemed pricey. Still, we had a nice time browsing around finding the occasional odd trinket. I'm curious about how often the stock turns over; I'll be back to look at furniture, as they had some nice pieces but none that were right for my space. The salesperson who checked us out was pleasant enough but didn't exactly go out of his way to offer assistance when we had questions about some of the merchandise. read more

This is one of my favorite local flea markets! I love wondering around this place and have bought several items over the past few months. My most favorite find: a Pyrex "Eyes" Chip & Dip Set! You can also find some neat local antique treasures here. Old newspapers, postcards, Mr. Bingle products (around Christmastime), and the list goes on! It is cash only, but there's an ATM inside the building on the left side of the checkout counter. I've never had an issue with the man who runs the counter. I hesitate to write because I feel like I found a secret gem and am not sure I want the secret getting out ;) BUT after a great first experience today, I felt like I had to write to counter some of the negative reviews. I was in the market for furniture and frames and there were definitely some really good finds in both categories. There wasn't a ton of furniture, but what they had was very competitively priced and unique. I bought a desk and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful in getting it loaded in the back of my SUV taking great care of the furniture and my car. Lots of treasures to be found here; just make sure you bring cash! read more

I have been to this flea market several times and enjoy the variety of items here. There is furniture, glass wear, hat boxes, plates, toys, and the list goes on and on! You can spend a couple of hours here and see everything. There also is a good turn around on the inventory. The location is easy to get to and parking always available. What I don't like is, they don't do debit cards, they only take CASH. And , finally , I am positive that the clerk there is possessed by demons!!!! When I asked a simple question about a 50% off sign that I saw in one of the booths, he was unable to give me an answer which I could comprehend. So I attempted to ask the same question differently, so maybe I could get an answer. He became so enraged, that he was foaming at the mouth, and angrily yelling words or sounds that only the devil could understand. He came out from behind his counter and for a moment I was concerned for my safety. This wasn't the first time I had been there and he has always been grouchy and unfriendly. But this day I knew it was the " debil that got him." Beware. He is one mean son of a bitch. read more

Composing this review has been challenging. I am not fond of leaving subpar reviews on local small businesses. 1st - Shop is decently cool, it has all of the traditional flea market feels. (Needs a little TLC) 2nd - Issue: PRICES ARE NUTS! SHOCKINGLY HIGH!! I promise I am not being dramatic. I was legitimately in disbelief and offended by the insane markup. This isn't a "expensive is relative" issue either. The items are literally at minimum at-least 6x over what the ethical SRP (suggested retail price) should be - and typically is at any other thrift or flea I have ever been to in my life. We're talking junky plastic broken figurines for $30!! Similar Items would be found in the .50 cent bin elsewhere, or frankly free. I saw plastic ashtrays and old wines glasses for $20 plus. Also, EVERYTHING was like this, not a dedicated few. I could not find one, literally not one, reasonably priced item in the store. I came with $250 cash (play money, ready to shop) and couldn't bring myself to be that frivolously foolish. Overpricing every item to such extremes made everything appear, frankly, insulting and a true rip off. Additionally they need updated things to sell - desperately.. Seems like all that's there are the picked through left overs of a nursing home rummage sale. Bottom line - Disbelief is an understatement, and unfortunately this I think this experience formed my opinion for life. It's disappointing because the place is cool enough with such great potential and very limited competition. The thrill of the treasure hunt is completely lost here. Please consider the nature of your business and what you're retailing. This isn't Saks and unfortunately most people know the value of a dusty old trinket.. Once changes are made I will be happy to revisit and accomplish my shopping trip. Until then I will have to go else where PS I have been in Business for a number of years. Since my go to market, Jefferson flea market, closed down or if they moved I can't find them I had to look around for a new place and found this one. It's actually a little more organized and not so cluttered. I needed lots of antique tea cups for a party and found plenty to chose from here. The only thing I didn't like was there is absolutely no wheeling and dealing. The actual booth owners aren't present so the price is the price. While I was there I noticed some of the furniture and I was impressed. Beautiful pieces were inexpensive and some had an extra 20% to 50% off. read more

This is hands-down the best indoor flea market I have ever been to, and I've been to quite a few between Chicago and New Orleans. A lot of flea markets of this nature can become holes of oddities and hey, one person's trash IS another person's treasure, but typically it's very hard for me to find things that peak my interest. However, River Road is FANTASTIC. I was already enamored by all of the vintage signs outside of the building and when I walked in I was greeted by a really kind man and a ton of incredibly beautiful furniture, furs and jewelry in immaculate condition. Plus, the items here are SHOCKINGLY affordable--like WHOA affordable. A vintage rabbit fur coat was about $125, which was awesome. There were a lot of really great pieces of furniture for less than $200 each, which is extremely competitive for the area. I wish I knew of this place when I was furnishing my house, I would have saved a ton of money!!!! But the best part was a stall I was looking through whose owner was reorganizing and she was so kind and recommended various coats she had that I was pawing through. I found this beautiful velvet coat for $15 bucks (!!!) and a cute little umbrella pin for the coat lapel. I also found this knee-length coat with a faux fur collar that I was dying for, but I figured one coat at a time was best. In short, I will be back VERY VERY soon and I can't wait to return with visiting family and friends. GO GO GO! PS it is cash only but there is an ATM with a low withdraw fee next to the register. We've never actually purchased anything here even though we've been about 6 times. But it does give us ideas for stuff that we can either build ourselves or purchase as a less expensive flea market. Parking is plentiful as long as a game isn't on across the street. read more

I spend so much time trying to simplify and rid my house of junk that I take great pleasure of seeing antiques, junk and other treasures outside of my home. This place is pretty interesting to me, because there is an outdoor collection of pots, garden ornaments and signs and inside, there is everything from furniture to tin cans. The inside is a warehouse/garage that is much larger than you would anticipate from the outside with mini vendors. Essentially, different rooms house different people's collections. The hours are odd, as it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but it is worth a stroll. I found it pretty expensive. I was looking for an egret as a gift and I thought $50 was a bit steep since there was rust on each of the little garden statutes....I get that it's part of the charm, I'm just not charmed enough to dish out $50. River Road Flea Market is a smaller version of the Jefferson Flea Market if you've ever been there. The best part of the RR Flea Market is the size, it's manageable to walk through without it being overwhelming and the staff there is very knowledgeable and friendly about their collections. This is a great place to live out your "pickers" fantasy! read more

I could spend all day here, so could my mom, so we did! Cute little antique spot that has several rooms that you can weave in and out of to find treasures. It was nice to see her excited about things my grand and great grandmother once owned replicas of. They have a little military section with old uniforms and other military associated items, so that was neat too. Very nice people. The man behind the counter gave my mom a lesson in how the old school fire alarm worked. read more

My Wife and I visit New Orleans quite often and this is a Hidden Treasure! We have never failed to find a Trinket or hard to find New Orleans Relics to bring home from The Big Easy. The Inventory does roll over quite often giving us new finds every time we vacation in New Orleans and would highly recommend! If I could give this place zero stars I would. First, let's start off with the merchandise. The chatchkas are tacky and handled poorly. If I needed to see knick knacks worse than that I would go to the dollar store. The outside decor is pitiful. They're left in the rain to rust or be wilted. These amusing metal and clay creatures have the appeal of an almost dead rat clawing its way to safety. They're lifeless and ugly. No wonder you see the same decorations over and over: no one wants to buy them. As you trudge through the hideous pieces you enter into a world of disorganization and clutter. The way to discribe this place could be overwhelming and useless. Now, the point of flea markets are to be such right? Treasure among the trash? Think again. This is trash among the trash. It's like the owner hand picked everything from the dump. The cds and vinyl are obsolete, scratched like he has cats running amuck. The books are falling apart dried and crumbling beyond readability. The clothes are stiff and smell terrible like cigarette smoke. The furniture buried underneath all the crap is scuffed and look like they've been rescued from the curb. You can hardly tell if they are just badly taken care of or just trash. The art is distasteful and lacks meaning. Your run of the mill motel art, if you will. The kitchen ware will make you cry as if he made the bowls and such himself. The jewelry looks like the kind you get out of those quarter machines in Walmart. Toys and collectibles line a wall excitingly but at closer look they are not in mint condition and they are the ones that no one wants. There's no real pattern to the items. They look pretty random and sad. His seemingly never ending ware house is filled to the brim with nothing at all. You find yourself searching but you leave with a reluctant purchase of a wrinkled pair of gloves and dinged tea cups. Everything inside is over priced to high heavens making this market more like a retail store. Not only is the merchandise less than satisfactory, the owner is extremely rude and short with his customers. The only end game to his endeavor is to squeeze his meaty hands around your dollar and shoo you out of the muggy warehouse. He sits behind his counter paying no mind to his customers and when he is so bothered he will snap at you. Don't ask him for anything he doesn't do those type of things for people. He is a rude sad little man with nothing better to do than read picture books behind his too small counter. As i walked out of his establishment to take pictures of the rundown place he followed me outside to take pictures of me taking pictures of him. Let's add immature and butt hurt to the list. Plenty of items to choose from, prices are mostly fair, BUT--- Don't bother asking for a receipt. I bought four items and was overcharged the ticket price by over $11, and the clerk would not give me a receipt so that I could confirm what he had written as the prices. I don't mind paying more, but I do not expect to be cheated at the counter. They only take cash, so expect to use the sketchy ATM by the "register," which itself consists of whatever the clerk decides to write down and then discard. Buyer beware of this business. read more
