So on a rainy Wednesday, I played hookey from work, put the dog in the car and set out on a day drive with J down to Normanville/Carrickalinga. It was my bday and this was stop one. Our planned breakfast there didn't happen until noon (I'm not much of a morning person), but the rain had moved past Normanville and we were left with cold, overcast skies with only glimpses of sun.
Although the cafe had not set up outdoor seating (because we were the only ones crazy enough to sit outside apparently), they were happy to wipe down a table and put out chairs so that we could sit outside with the pooch. I really wanted breakfast, so was relieved to discover they served breakfast all day.
The coffee was good and hot, with a smooth flavour that meant I didn't have to add sugar or sweetener. Excellent start!
The cafe is an American-style retro cafe and the breakfast selections are named after US presidents. I thought the theme was cute but not sure how I felt about an Obama breakfast that featured ham. I chose a poached egg, avocado, smoked salmon selection, unfortunately named the Reagan. When I ordered it, I pointed and indicated that my political view wouldn't let me say the name aloud. J had the the Presidents' breakfast, roughly the equivalent of the big brekkie. The food was stunning. Although the poacher is put away at lunch time to make room for other needed cooking appliances, I was happy with my perfectly fried eggs. The homemade. Relish served with the big brekkie was to die-for. The presentation was beautiful.
I was particularly taken with the service. It seemed like nothing was too much effort. Maybe it was the small town charm or country magic working on us, but both J and I found it charming.
We even popped next door to the famous Normanville bakery to get a fresh bun for afternoon tea.
I know some people would find the cafe kitschy, but we found it charming. There was strong competition all up and down the Main Rd, but we were extremely happy with our choice. read more
