As you can guess by the very original name of this place, it is a shop that sells both chicken and…read moreseafood. However, it does neither particularly well. The chickens are probably better than the fish and chips which tend to be a little bit soggy. The shop has changed hands in the last few years and is now run by an Asian family who are friendlier than the previous owners but the fare doesn't seem to have improved much. The shop itself is pretty outdated and needs a bit of a revamp but it is conveniently located within walking distance of the beach and a nice grassy strip along the Esplanade which is a particularly nice place to sit and eat them. So if you are looking for a standard, nothing too special, place to buy some take away to eat at the beach this is ok.

The weirdest thing about this place is the prickly and authoritarian owner (presumably "Jan"). She barks orders at the staff like they are idiots. Some of this behaviour creeps its way into the customer interaction with the customers, making you feel a bit like your ordering from Seinfeld's "soup Nazi". The staff were friendly and tolerated my 3 year old twins throwing superballs around the shops everywhere (well so they should when they have a vending machine which sells superballs for $2 each in the shop!!!). We got some "potato fritters" which to me as a Victorian are known as "potato cakes" and they gave us about 8 of them when we only asked for 4 - so thats a good thing. They also sell Farmers Union Iced Coffee (who doesnt over here) - which as an interstater is a real hit!!! I love the stuff and would even consider moving over to SA because of it! Its only sold at the supermarkets and some service stations in Victoria - not everywhere like here! I don't often buy the cooked take away food here but I am always here buying their fresh fish. For a seaside tourist destination Glenelg lacks fresh fish shops, having tried the few there are, I keep coming back here because it has the freshest fare available. But after you've made back the chips those seagulls stole from you, don't feel the need to stop there. Reclaim some fish or coffee you never had. This is a beach cafe, after all, and chips ain't all that's on the menu. But be warned: if the lesser chips you were eating along the beach attracted the envy of the seagulls, these bad boys'll do the same and more. Indeed, as I sat and ate my chips a tiny swallow flew into the cafe to get at some chips. They're like magnets. So, if you feel safer sitting and eating indoors, I won't blame you.
