I've lived near Victor for nearly a year now, but I still haven't figured out how things work here…read more It's 7:30 on a Thursday evening and I've got me a hankerin' for some good ol' fish 'n' chips. How difficult can it be? The answer, of course, is very difficult. Victor has two good fish and chipperies, 'The Original' in Ocean St and a new one (whose name escapes me round the corner in Albert Place). The are a few others that fry up frozen stuff to order, but that's not what the good lady and myself are craving at the moment. Both are closed. It's 7:30 for Bob's sake. There are other starving locals peering in through the windows looking like the undead in a zombie movie searching for brains, we join them for a few moments hoping that the staff inside will feel sufficient guilt to reopen, but it's not going to happen, eye-contact is strictly avoided. We're just deciding whether to fall back on Chinese or Pizza when I remember seeing a place on the seafront along at Encounter Bay. More out of desperation than expectation we head off. Pa's Fish and Chips it's called and it's about halfway along Franklin Parade. We arrive and it doesn't look good. The cafe is empty and there's someone vacuuming the floor, I put on my best basset hound face and mouth 'Are you open?' through the window. Not only do I get eye-contact but I also get a big smile and a welcome "Of course we are". I'm Impressed, we're not talking Michelin star territory here, but it's pleasant, a good local feel with a perfectly reasonable cafe menu and (an unexpected bonus) a well stocked bar. So, the main event... Flake and Chips for both of us. I have to admit here to being a pom, a naturalized and house trained Aussie now, but still a pom in some deep, cultural recess of my soul. North Sea Cod is one of only a tiny number of things I miss about the old country, a nice bit of Flake (or mullaway when it's available) is the closest we get here. Anyway, it's freshly cooked, wrapped in paper (none of that cardboard box rubbish thank-you very much), reasonably priced and served with a smile. It smells so good that, rather than sticking to Plan A and taking it home, we decide to park there on the seafront and eat sitting in the car and listening to the waves (it was too dark to see much). Perfect way to enjoy good chips and decent fish in fresh crispy batter. Sometimes, simple food, done well, under the right conditions can seem like the best meal in the world.

We paid $15 for a seve about half the size of an entree meal which included aprpprox 2 table spoons of sauce and a few lumps of carrot. Ordered chip sizes as advertised and when we opened the packet found approx half the amount as per shown on the wall. Then to really delight us the waitress bought meals to a table of waiting guest the proceeded to pat their dog and without washing her hands continued serving customers. Our first time there will most definately be our last.

Tried for dinner and not as good but for a Monday night in mid winter in an area where good food is hard to come by I would still recommend it. Despite issues with the girl who served us the food was ok and compared to the hellhole hotel we ate at the night before it was great! The Anchor steam beer was great too!

The gentle, pleasant odour of the salty, splashing azure waters just over the other side of the bowls club gives that signature seaside getaway sense. The memories of the hunger for fish n chips, sand in between your toes and a light touch of sunburn come flooding back as we walk in the door. It's good to be back. Although this time, instead of fish and chips, we opted to share the tomahawk steak dinner special with tapas starters. Oh man, two of my most favouritest meal varieties in all the world, combined into one utterly decadent dinner treat for the senses! Between three adults and one child, we plowed through the delish tapas treats and the perfectly cooked steak with aplomb. Service was outstanding. Friendly, not too OTT, timely, discreet and open to questions/providing suggestions. By the end of the meal, I was well-fed, laughing heartily, wine-soaked like an upper-class pirate, and just about ready for a dip in the sea! It's not an obvious destination if you're in from out of state, but well worth a visit if you can find it.

I only recently went into this take away shop as it was on my way home and I wanted some hot chips…read more I had in actual fact gone into a similar shop elsewhere less than 10 minutes before and walked out at their exhorbitant prices. I went here instead and found out that they dols the chips the way I wanted them, wrapped not bagged, and I got heaps more for the same amount a very small bag would have cost me at the other place. I found out the shop is under new management and the owner was lovely. He was so understanding and seems to have made some changes for the better as soon as he took over. I grabbed my chips and a menu for future reference and left. The chips were very nice. A little too much chicken salt but I am not a salt fan, I only put chicken salt on chips and nothing else so I can taste even just a small amount. But maybe next time I will ask him for just a little chicken salt. They did have cooked chooks in there ready to go and they smelled great. The seafood in the fridge looked nice and fresh too. I looked at the menu and they are CHEAP! Much cheaper than most other chicken shops. Like a 1/4 chook hot pack is only $7.00. That's about $2 cheaper than other places and if you are buying for my family that would mean I would save $10, for a family of 5, compared to buying elsewhere. For a family on a budget - that's enough of a saving to make me want to go there. Even a hamburger or steak sandwich with the lot are only $6.50 each! Hot dogs with the lot for $5! They also take function orders and phone orders before 7:45pm. AND have EFTPOS!

We drove to Second Valley beach with our takeaway and it was still toasty warm when we sat down to eat. They have the option of a few non-standards for a fish and chip shop such as the pizza and yiros, but still do the standard stuff well. Pineapple fritters were done properly in pancake batter rather than just deep fried - haven't seen that in ages! - and were just delicious. I'm judging this as a takeaway joint rather than a sit down cafe - the food is great, but make sure you take it to the beach as the cafe is really just a kitchen with some chairs to wait in. Although the outside seating did look okay. But seriously - beautiful beaches in every direction - why wouldn't you eat at the beach?

I had the combination yiros of chicken and lamb, it was tasty, cooked well and the ingredients were very fresh. Chips are tasty and not too salty too. The store offers quite a few good things including pizzas and other classics that I will have to try next time I am down here. Nothing is better than having some of this scrumptious food at the beach that is less than one kilometer away. The day I went there it was sunny and 23 degrees - a perfect experience.
