Delicious food, great service, comfy fireplace, and a lovely view over the surrounding vineyards. For us this was the perfect way of finishing off two great days in Barossa and McLaren Vale. We already had a ton of great food the past two days, but this was excellent once again. For starters, we had the Snapper croquettes and Kangaroo tail. The croquettes were creamy and fresh (a.o. thanks to fresh dill and other spices). The roo tail was fantastic; super tender fall-of-the-bone meat, great seasoning, and not a trace of game-iness. For the mains, our group of 4 shared the goat curry, the roast/steamed 1/2 duck and some duck-fat & rosemary potatoes. The curry was excellent; not too sweet or coconutty, just elegant and relatively light. The duck was a feast. Fantastic texture and flavors. We finished it all off with a shared desert and some coffees. With one drink per person we ended up at $50 a head; not a bad deal all.

Well ...... Words fail me, in short, bloody magnificent. Service first rate, attention to detail was excellent and for any food allergies they bent over backwards to make sure your needs where met. I had the Kangaroo Tail entree as a main, fantastic, Julie had a perfectly cooked steak with salad. Staff had that personal touch that you get in 5 star establishments, would recommend The Salopian to anyone that enjoys genuine good food and service

The space is so peaceful and somewhere I could imagine JK Rowling writing Harry Potter as she sipped on a beautiful McLaren Vale Syrah or Chardonnay. Perhaps then Harry would have ended up with Hermione. The food here is simply spectacular in a very precise way. Seafood stew filled with the goodness of local produce and chicken with fennel was ridiculously soft, the flavours beyond the realms of the everyday. Thank you so much for a lovely dining experience. Simply magical.

We started with the Selection of dips (4 in all) and they were very well made, served with Pita Bread and chargrill toasted French stick, that worked very well. Then we had some mains. The menu is not large by any means. but there is something to suit almost all tastes. It's one of those a few WELL Made dishes rather than a mass of average. I had the Pork Belly and Scallop dish.. it was so tasty. light, fresh, meaty

I have been to Woodstock on several occasions and the most recent was for the wedding of two very good friends. I have spent a great deal of my professional life organising functions - weddings being the most high pressure of these events (even the meekest girl has the ability to turn into a raging bridezilla) and I was absolutely floored with the organisation, affability and professionalism of Zak the restaurant manager and the woodstock crew. We had an alternate drop menu, chosen by the bride and groom. Every dish was delicious and maintained a very good standard (not quite as good as their unique, rustic a la carte menu, but it's impossible to acheive the same level of finish en masse). The restaurant at woodstock is called Coterie and is in the unique semi circular building where the reception was held. The space features an open fire in the middle of the inner wall. On Friday evenings they do a pizza night, nom, nom, sundays they have live jazz and there are Llamas over the back fence! Great novelty factor. I would not hesitate to recommend woodstock as a must-do Mclaren Vale destination. If you're into rose - the Grenache rose is one of the best Reds - The stocks Shiraz is a boys fave my pick may be the Octogenarian, grenache tempranillo

If you catch it in the warmer months be sure to sit under the pergola looking out onto the vineyards, lime groves and herb and veggie garden- it will take your breath away. My partner and I indulged in the autumn tasting menu and we were not disappointed. If we weren't working that afternoon we would have opted for the pairing with wine option- their wine list is equally as good as the food menu. Our favourite dishes were the lemon tart with torched meringue, the pumpernickel, beetroot, malt and goats curd and the sliced South Australian Kangaroo in native pepper with a blackberry reduction and hazelnut. Honestly though, out of 8 courses we did not dislike one thing. It's been a long time since we have enjoyed a meal and service so thoroughly at a restaurant so we will be back! It is a little on the pricer side but with the quality of the food and service it's worth every cent!

To my knowledge I am the first of my friends to visit, and boy am I glad I did! The restaurant is located - as the name indicates in an old drying shed, surrounded by a tahitian lime orchard. The table settings and chairs are relaxed and comfortable with just the right amount of finish - they really make you want to settle in for the afternoon which is what I suggest you do. The food is local produce of a superior standard and the dishes are imaginative and fresh, providing excellent value. Entrees range between $15 and $18, mains $28 to $35 and desserts are $15. I would suggest you tackle all 3 courses, but unless you are a really big eater you may just explode, so probably safer to plan on 2! They're only open for lunches, so chuck a sickie, or plan a sunday drive and I'll see you there!

Hats off to the wine makers! Just outside of the main strip in McLaren Vale, you will be greeted with a lovely old homestead, vegetable patch, chicken shed and an array of buildings for different styles of entertaining. This is what we wish all our homes to look like. Oh, the country Life. Take note of the barn in front of you with the massive pizza oven. What a great space for functions overlooking the rolling hills and vineyards. Also, just next to it is an outdoor fireplace under a gazebo. I would love a Friday arvo knock off or Sunday sesh in there. And just over to the right, you will find the entry to the Cellar Door. Make your way through the front doors and you will find a large open space with one long bar. Great to handle a few group tastings at once, which is a must for the busy weekends. The staff here are ever so friendly and you can see that they are proud of the produce. They will share the story of each wine and educate you on why each wine earned it's name. Going through the flight you will have a range of options to suit your palate. After trying them all I would have to say my favourites being the Chardonnay and Skeleton Key Shiraz. The Chardonnay here is called the Minimalist and is true to it's name. It is lighter than most, with a light peach fruit flavour. It does not have the heavy oak flavour that the old varieties have which is great. The Skeleton Key Shiraz is bold, but it has a spiced slightly sweet berry flavour through the wine. Perfect for winter! Pop Penny's Hill on your list of wineries to visit next time you are in McLaren Vale. You will not be disappointed.

The winery not only has the Penny HIll range of wines but also Mr. Riggs and Black Chook. This leads to an extensive tasting list and there will be something for everyone. The bottle prices are very reasonable too and will be one of the reasons you go back for more!!

And we traveled so far to get there. This would be the managers faults since he said "...the best I can do for you". And the manage Derrick asked if I wanted to tip when I was paying (Embarrassing for the restaurant that they have to ask); I felt we deserved better than that. For those that doesn't know the Aussie culture, we do not tip in Australia as locals. The minimum wages starts off really high, whereas, the wages as a wait staff in USA is low therefore we tip if the service was excellent. I've been around Australia since Feb 2014 so I KNOW this. Excellent service deserves a tip. A tip is NOT earned by asking for it..... ANYWHERE in the world. The service and food was excellent. Unfortunately, and perhaps this was partly due to the raving reviews and reputation of the restaurant I had grown to understand, my experience here fell short of my expectations. The food was for the most part delicious however the menu itself is very standard traditional fine dining. Signature steak and red meat for the most part with a few fish dishes and even less vegetarian options. We ordered the house made gnocchi for entree. Unfortunately it lacked the melt in your mouth aspect I was expecting from freshly made gnocchi. For mains we ordered the wagyu corned beef brisket which was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection. It was fairly salty though and had a rich sauce. The Lamb rump shoulder unfortunately was a bit on the over-well-done side. Sides ordered were the Korean fried Broccoli and sweet potato. We loved both dishes although everything was deep fried and it became a bit much. It would have been nice to accompany our rich mains with sides that were fresh to break it up. For dessert we chose the popular Chocolate Melange for two - the signature board of mini desserts. This was amazing. Word of warning, we were in struggle town by this point - but you are able to opt to take away what you can't finish. Good service is extremely important to me, and this was the down side. For an expensive fine dining restaurant with so many staff, our wait times were terrible. We were not checked upon and particularly between dinner and dessert, we waited almost an hour. It took a few reminders for our dessert to finally come. And after eventually giving up and asking for the bill, it came. Our waitress offered another round of drinks on the house but by that point we were bursting from eating so much that we couldn't possibly fit anything else in. It would have been appreciated if we were offered the dessert on the house instead and we were extremely dissatisfied with their failure to compensate for their overlook in service. Overall the food was enjoyable but it wasn't the best and I've enjoyed better food at more reasonable prices elsewhere. For the steep outlay and reputation they pride themselves on I expected a much higher level of service and taste across the board.
