I have been to Woodstock on several occasions and the most recent was for the wedding of two very good friends. I have spent a great deal of my professional life organising functions - weddings being the most high pressure of these events (even the meekest girl has the ability to turn into a raging bridezilla) and I was absolutely floored with the organisation, affability and professionalism of Zak the restaurant manager and the woodstock crew. We had an alternate drop menu, chosen by the bride and groom. Every dish was delicious and maintained a very good standard (not quite as good as their unique, rustic a la carte menu, but it's impossible to acheive the same level of finish en masse). The restaurant at woodstock is called Coterie and is in the unique semi circular building where the reception was held. The space features an open fire in the middle of the inner wall. On Friday evenings they do a pizza night, nom, nom, sundays they have live jazz and there are Llamas over the back fence! Great novelty factor. I would not hesitate to recommend woodstock as a must-do Mclaren Vale destination. Make your way through the front doors and you will find a large open space with one long bar. Great to handle a few group tastings at once, which is a must for the busy weekends. The staff here are ever so friendly and you can see that they are proud of the produce. They will share the story of each wine and educate you on why each wine earned it's name. Going through the flight you will have a range of options to suit your palate. After trying them all I would have to say my favourites being the Chardonnay and Skeleton Key Shiraz. The Chardonnay here is called the Minimalist and is true to it's name. It is lighter than most, with a light peach fruit flavour. It does not have the heavy oak flavour that the old varieties have which is great. The Skeleton Key Shiraz is bold, but it has a spiced slightly sweet berry flavour through the wine. Signature steak and red meat for the most part with a few fish dishes and even less vegetarian options. We ordered the house made gnocchi for entree. Unfortunately it lacked the melt in your mouth aspect I was expecting from freshly made gnocchi. For mains we ordered the wagyu corned beef brisket which was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection. It was fairly salty though and had a rich sauce. The Lamb rump shoulder unfortunately was a bit on the over-well-done side. Sides ordered were the Korean fried Broccoli and sweet potato. We loved both dishes although everything was deep fried and it became a bit much. It would have been nice to accompany our rich mains with sides that were fresh to break it up. For dessert we chose the popular Chocolate Melange for two - the signature board of mini desserts. This was amazing. Word of warning, we were in struggle town by this point - but you are able to opt to take away what you can't finish. Good service is extremely important to me, and this was the down side. For an expensive fine dining restaurant with so many staff, our wait times were terrible. We were not checked upon and particularly between dinner and dessert, we waited almost an hour. It took a few reminders for our dessert to finally come. And after eventually giving up and asking for the bill, it came. Our waitress offered another round of drinks on the house but by that point we were bursting from eating so much that we couldn't possibly fit anything else in. It would have been appreciated if we were offered the dessert on the house instead and we were extremely dissatisfied with their failure to compensate for their overlook in service. Overall the food was enjoyable but it wasn't the best and I've enjoyed better food at more reasonable prices elsewhere. For the steep outlay and reputation they pride themselves on I expected a much higher level of service and taste across the board.

When we arrive for our new year eve dinner, we were greeted with two glasses of pol roger, which is a fantastic start. We stood on the porch to enjoy the view before the meal started. The set menu is quite well proportioned. Not too much food or too rich. Everything was put together with ultimate care, without the excessive pretentiousness and molecular gastronomy of top restaurants. Everything was excellent. My favorites were: Oysters with cape Malay dressing: amazing concoction. Super fresh oyster but the best part of this dish is in the sauce. A bit of acidity perfectly balanced with a splash of chili oil. Arguably the best oyster I have ever had. Blini with hand picked crab, cucumber, and ikura - beautiful presentation. The blini is warm and soft and forms the cradle for the best of the ingredients. Ikura usually tastes a bit raw and overwhelmingly salty on its own. Here it was blended into the blini and crab into a delightful bite that piques your appetite to discover more. ---- The rest: Lamb tartare - pretty good. Interesting seaweed wrap for this. Salmon sashimi - super fresh sashimi. A bit bland. Ask for a sea salt and additional lime to brighten this dish. Pork belly and loin - like the sweet cabbage addition to this. More traditional dish. St George whiting with pumpkin broth - love the fish with the broth. The fish is perfectly cooked. I didn't care for the greens on top (it may be broccoli). Cheese supplement - nothing special. Can skip this course. Chocolate mousse with pistachio, cherry, and peach sorbet - this is probably my least favorite within the menu. The rich chocolate clashes a bit with the acidity of the cherry and peach sorbet. I had to eat the two parts separately. I liked the fruits more than the chocolate. --- For the wine by the glass, I had the lane vineyard Chardonnay. It was great with the meal. If one is driving after dinner, it's best to ration the wine intake given the wild animals on the road at night.
