I was excited to hear that Sprouts had opened up in an area not that far from me but my first…read moreexperience left a lot to be desired. I'm going to give the physical store a 5/5. It is bright, clean, and organized. It is smaller than I expected and aisles are a little tight. The selection is limited in the sense that this is the grocery store to do all of your shopping but you go here for specific things. The produce selection was good and everything looked fresh. There are a lot of healthy brands which is the reason why you would come to this type of store. There is no dedicated bakery (that I saw) and the sweet treat selections are limited and mostly healthy! The employees we encountered were mostly friendly but my encounter in the deli is what made me give my overall review a 3/5. They have Boars heads which is great. I stepped up to the counter, at the moment there were no customers at all. The woman acknowledged me and said I'll be right with you. I could see she was actively filling an order. I waited for about 5 mins. I could see other workers in the back but they were doing things, so I am waiting. The woman than says to me that she's working on an order and just needs to do the cheese and then she will be with me. I say ok. I am fine waiting because I see she's doing something. But then she asks her coworker if she could help me and I could see the attitude she had because she must have been doing something and was interrupted. She came over to me and said what do you want in a short face with a pissy face. I should have walked away but I had already waited so long I just wanted my order. I ask for a half a pound of turkey. She ended up giving me a pound. I didn't even say anything because I don't want to argue with someone who is handling my food. I was going to get more things but I just said forget it. After that I didn't really feel like going through the rest of the store so we went through 1-2 more aisles and then we decided to go to Wegmans since a majority of what we needed was there anyway. Overall I think this is a nice, niche grocery in the vein of Trader Joes and Whole foods. I would go here for produce or if I was looking for a few things not a full on grocery shop. My experience in the deli really turned me off so I don't know if I would come back here. It's almost 30 mins from where I live and if I'm going to drive that long I want to go to a place that I enjoy.

Cavaco Supermarket is known in town as the go-to Portuguese deli, grocery, and bakery. The shelves are even stocked with products imported from Portugal. On the front counter, you'll find a variety of fresh baked breads, codfish fritters and turnovers, pastries, as well as of course espresso. In addition, they are a churrasqueria and offer delicious BBQ chicken, served in a giant tray over rice and fries. Their pastries, such as their bola de berlim and pastel de nata I'm not too much of a fan of compared to other spots in town, but their chicken and codfish fritter was delicious and their fries are even fresh cut. Take a look at their various imported goods and merchandise and you'll certainly be surprised!

(And a different collection for the Mexican community but that's a review for another day) And Cavaco's Supermarket is one of these. And what a gem it is. At first you might think the store owners are unfriendly but they are not. They just speak very little English. And if you just try a little bit they are so warm and welcoming. And their food is delicious and different. I have a photo of what the store owner was calling codfish, which I was sure was something else but it wasn't. It was a delicious oniony pancake/fritter with chunks of fish in it (Thanks Brendan B for letting me know they are Pataniscas and Pataniscas de Bacalhau in particular!) I also bought a fried (croquette ?) with savory chicken inside. It was the perfect mix of crisp and chewy outside and spiced chicken inside! I also had a delicious cappuccino (Every cappuccino I have had in South River is delicious) Loving my newly discovered secret place, South River, NJ. But Shhhhh don't tell anybody! I like having it all to myself!
