If you're the sort of traveler who seeks adventure, unique experiences, meeting new people (and the…read moreidea of a resort makes you and your wallet groan).... you're going to love this place. We spent two weeks traveling around the island and we stayed in many different hostels... Lova Lava was one of our favorites! Just a short drive from some of the most beautiful beaches on the island (Green Sands and Pahoe), the location is ideal. The outdoor communal kitchen with a small fridge and stove suited our needs perfectly and the bathroom is cleaner/nicer than most hostels. At our time of visit, the solar shower wasn't working but a cold shower was refreshing after a long day at the beach (shower in the afternoon!). Cozy, clean VW buses, hammocks, totally eco-friendly, walking distance to a grocery store too. If you're touring the island via Hele On, it's walking distance from the bus stop. We had a head lamp with us which was a life saver as the grounds get pretty dark at night (also allowed us to play cards in the kitchen area after dark). If you're scared of wild animals (re other post), Hawaii is about the perfect place-- virtually nothing can harm you but mosquitoes so have no fear peeing in the dark. If you get the chance, check out the dive bar in Ocean View - it has karaoke twice a month and it's a great place to meet locals. Reservations are mandatory - so make sure you email to request accommodations. Enjoy!

This place is a cool, off the grid place to stay on the cheap while in Hawaii. We had an issue the first night with the yurt getting too cold for our little one, but the owner of the place, Anitra, did not respond to our email. We were disapointed with this.

Former farmworker housing converted to hostel accommodations…read more This hostel isn't for everyone. Maybe the adventurous sort that has managed to bring their own sleeping bag and doesn't mind wearing bug spray from your bunk to the common area with the shared bathrooms, showers, and cooking facilities. If you are the type of person that uses hand sanitizer at least once per day, then this place isn't for you. If you arethe type of person that can say "I'm resilient, I'll live" and don't mind not touching certain surfaces, then this place might be for you. There is all you can eat organic citrus fruits. Washing machine available. I forget how many quarters it takes. Line dry is free. Tire swing available. Choose the single story rooms, don't sleep in the multi-story portion. It gets hot up there. There were four people staying there are part of their work exchange program. All four were very nice. If I wanted to spend extensive time at the Green Sand Beach, I may stay here again. Or I may stay up in Volcano or Captain Cook at make a day trip out of it. Or if I feel extravagant, I may check out the bed and breakfast up the road. I went to Vietnam awhile back. This place reminded me of the houses in the countryside, except that South Point Hostels had screens over the windows and the houses I stayed at in Vietnam were cleaner.

We (Kamaaina visiting from Oahu) took the tour with Willam as our guide. He's extremely…read moreknowledgeable in volcanoes and lava, even though he said he's not a geologist. Also he knows a lot about Hawaiian culture and history. Do yourself a favor, book the full tour, not the short tour. You'll be taken further into the lava tubes, and end up crawling on your hands and knees (knee pads, gloves, helmets, and headlamps provided). We expected the tour to last two hours, and it ended up being about 3 hours and 15 minutes. Tour is great for all ages. Plan on an hour plus drive from Kona. Arrive early as there is a waiver to sign and to use the bathroom before heading into the cave. Wear long pants (avoid denim jeans as they're not comfortable crawling or climbing ladders in). I do not recommend wearing shorts. Wear good hiking boots as the lava rock is sharp and will tear up your sneakers. Bring bug spray, as there are mosquitoes topside where the parking and office is. We would take this tour again, and William said it can be altered for repeat guests.

They said they were going to take action to avoid anything like that happening again, and also that they were addressing the bathroom privacy issues. They sounded serious, and I'll trust that it will be a different experience in the future. Given that, I learned a lot and it's an unusually extensive cave network that provides for a cool bit of time despite the heat and an unusual activity during a trip.
