Didn't know going in but seems the teachers are over-expecting of even 3-year old students... This…read morewill be a rant. They expect them to finish "school work" and "assignments" even though they are pre-school and there are no true assignments for that age. (At least there shouldn't be) We had our child in first grade at the beginning of the year and removed him due to many blatant circumstances... one was due to a combined 1st and 2nd grade experience which he wasn't prepared for the combined learning and greatly divided attention based on acumen. They said they treat both separately but we were sent home with homework that was NOT for a first grader. This brings up a greater issue. We believe this school thinks of themselves as a higher/further educational school for bright children. They are not. They give work to children without the teaching/learning they need to actually accomplish the work. Unless you are the culture/lifestyle that also teaches your child at home, your child may be lost or left behind at this school. This has by far been the most "by the book/rules" "school" that I have seen for CHILDREN as young as three years old. Do we really think that three year olds should "finish their homework"? Do three year olds even need homework!? I believe enrolling my son in this school was one of the worst decisions I have made in my raising him to this date. He has been thriving and multitudes happier since attending public school I can't imagine why he hated this school so much.

Man alive. My daughter went, very hesitant, to BASE, at the beginning of last school year as a 6th…read moregrader. We got SO lucky to get the second round lottery pick to enroll. She wasn't thrilled because she thought she was going to Summa. But I told her "baby cake, give it a year for me, if you hate it you can leave, but I think you're going to find your people there." And she SO has. She loves her teachers, the classes, andnshe has FOUND her people. I'm HOPEFUL (hear me Universe!!) That my son gets in for 6th grade as well because Conestoga is NOT an option. Principal Fitzpatrick and Principal Davilla are both very hands on and involved. I've become involved with the PTO and it's everything a PTO SHOULD be. A group of parents whose kids attend, who are looking to raise money for their kids school, make it more FUN, and support the staff and students. There is NO snooty BS, no cliques. Just good people who work SO hard to make an impact. BASE is still a baby school, having formed in 2020, and then not really having a chance to gel before the pandemic. They brought the Health and Science school together with the tech. And BASE was born. Now those incoming 6th graders are freshman this year and my daughter's class (Class of 2032!) is the FIRST to have the PTO formed and operating. I'm so excited to see how BASE will grow and be even better in the next 7 years!! Also, can we have a parents night where we get to explore the autopsy table?!?!

We had our son enrolled at BASE for one year (6th grade) before deciding to withdraw him at the end…read moreof the school year. The school presents an air of elitism, but in our experience, the educational process and academic quality does not reflect that image. It is difficult to find a teacher who took a truly proactive role in ensuring that students fully grasp the material. Most seemed to limit their involvement to lecturing, answering questions, grading assignments and quizzes, and leaving the rest to parents. We saw no exceptions to this during our year at BASE--though to be fair, we were only there for 6th grade, so perhaps there are more engaged teachers in other grades. However, we were not willing to wait and see. A major challenge is the Beaverton School District's shift away from using standard textbooks. BASE follows this approach, and none of our son's 6th grade classes used any official textbooks. Instead, each teacher compiled and used their own collection of materials, which varied in quality and structure. This lack of consistency made it difficult for students to follow a coherent curriculum and nearly impossible for parents to effectively support learning at home. The Social Studies class, in particular, was taught by a stereotypical "blue-haired they/them" individual. The so called teacher promoted Howard Zinn's revisionist version of American history. One example was an assignment where students held a Mock Trial of Christopher Columbus for "the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and environmental crimes against millions of Taino people and Mother Earth", portraying him entirely through Zinn and his followers' lens. After researching Zinn's work myself, I found zero credible historical (!) evidence supporting many of the claims made in class. Finally, in our initial meeting with the principal, she told us--twice, without being prompted--that if parents don't like the school, they're welcome to go elsewhere. That statement left a lasting impression and unfortunately set the tone for our experience.
