ALL ABOARD! Sonoma…read moreTrain Station is a delightful little hideaway that feels like stepping back in time. It's a perfect spot for families and train lovers alike, featuring authentic vintage trains, a charming gift shop, and plenty of hands-on fun for kids. Whether you're a local or visiting, it's one of those rare places that feels special, where you can truly relax and enjoy the simple joys of a day well-spent. We discovered it thanks to my dad's passion for trains, and it quickly became a favorite. The station is well-maintained and easy to navigate, with convenient parking nearby. While the café we visited isn't located inside the train station itself, it's close by and offers tasty, reasonably priced treats, perfect for taking a break and refueling. It's a wonderful place to connect with others, explore history, and make memories. If you're looking for a unique outing that's off the beaten path, Sonoma Train Station is absolutely worth visiting. The empty parking lot when we arrived right before noon was now packed with cars double parking and driving around. Sounds of kids playing, exploring together was welcoming. The teapot is refreshing. The spout lets out a mist of cool water when the button is pushed the detached blue station directly in front. The dancing sprinkler play stations accompanied by the foam bath was fun for the big and little, part of the Dinosaur Event. The various activities for the Dinosaur Event, spread throughout the day, kept the littles engaged. What a great event and time had! Our little lasted the entirety of the event time 12-4p ending it with a bag of popcorn and an ice cream from the truck.

The entrance is like walking through a castle to a whole new world gated inside. It was clean, grassy, huge and open spaces with different areas to play for the kids. There are benches and picnic tables everywhere too. They also have restrooms on site too. Lots of grassy and shady areas to hang out as well. Our grandbaby had a great time running everywhere to her hearts content and she cannot wait to go back again with her parents.

Because they are working with important stuff pertaining to national security, nuclear materials and other top secret stuff, they won't let the average Yelper in there. But, right outside their front gate is the Discovery Center. The Discovery Center is a small museum that gives you a brief introduction to the lab and what they do. They have hands on and interactive exhibits for children to play with. Most of the exhibits were well maintained. It is an interesting way to spend an hour. The staff, at least on the day were there, was fantastic. Since we were the only ones there, she almost gave us a personalized tour to explain some of the exhibits and talk about the lab and what they do. They have an easy scavenger hunt for children with a nice t-shirt as a prize. They are pretty generous with the scavenger hunt and let children of all ages play. The museum is priced just right for most Yelpers. It is free! It's a nice place, with not a lot of visitors.

The terrains is varied between interesting woodland and open hillsides. It's all about the journey with no sweep vistas but a nice variety of wildflowers, mushrooms and a small waterfall (seasonal.) There's a large lot at the college in Novato, with an $8 parking fee. From the lot, you walk behind the ball fields and will get to the trail entrance..There's a park map and well signed trail. I opted to go left on Paheco Pond trail which eventually connects to the waterfall trail.. That wound up some gentle switchbacks through quiet woodland. The waterfall itself wasn't much to see after a dry January but the forest was still a pretty hike. From there, I took the Susan Alexander and Wixel trail down to the Indian Valley Fire road to complete the look. While there's a few short steep climbs, most of the loop was pretty mild and I really enjoyed exploring here. Seems like a great local park and if I lived nearby, I'd be a regular. Beautiful park.
