My daughter was enrolled in a session a few seasons ago at Sonic Soccer when she was 3…read more The coaches for the session kept on changing, and were apathetic and just generally seemed bored and not interested in coaching. The first coach taught the first few sessions, and he taught 3 year olds like one would teach high schoolers. He did not know how to interact with children, and so the children never really bonded with him or responded well. He was not inspiring or exciting. Then halfway through the season, he just disappeared. Two other coaches came and subbed, and they were worse. They could not have looked more bored. They would set up drills for the children, and then not even watch them - but just chat with each other. There was a lot of dead time because they didn't even notice that the children had completed their drills.....so a lot of people just standing around. The children lost interest and just started playing with each other or wandering off the field. At some point in the season, Coach Sonic himself came and subbed, and those sessions were great. He excited the children, and made them really want to play. He connected with them, and made soccer fun. But him coming to coach was inconsistent and sporadic. I think maybe out of all the sessions he came twice. Then it was back to the boring coaches who could care less. After that, I pulled my daughter out of this one and joined another group that has really amazing coaches all the way around, who inspire the kids and really know how to interact with them and get them excited about soccer. In summary, I think Coach Sonic is great, but they need to work on hiring better other coaches - or provide some training to them that include how to work with children.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) has historically been a cornerstone of our community providing…read moresafe spaces, mentorship, and life-changing opportunities for youth. However, in recent years, many community members have grown increasingly concerned about a noticeable decline in program quality, leadership transparency, and overall impact since Executive Director Carlos Velazquez has been at the helm. There is a growing perception that decisions are being made without meaningful community input, and that longstanding, trusted leaders who once strengthened PAL's mission have been replaced with Carlos unqualified friends and even family members. This has led to concerns about whether current leadership is prioritizing the needs of youth and families or moving in a direction that does not fully align with PAL's true core values. Sellouts Like Marcel Braithwaite who is Director of Programs has been known for years as not being for the community and youths by taking away programs and only showing up when the cameras and news are around for ribbon cutting ceremonies. He and Carlos gives out spaces like Harlem PAL to corrupt individuals to use when true community organizations are denied access without any real clarification. We urge community leaders, stakeholders, and oversight bodies to take a closer look, engage directly with those impacted, and work toward restoring PAL as a safe, structured, and youth-centered organization. Our young people deserve consistency, integrity, and leadership that truly reflects the mission PAL was built on. These two are the reason for the decline and mistrust of the current PAL status and need to be replaced.

PAL is providing children in their Head Start programs with educational activity packets and books. They're also conducting performing arts workshops via video teleconferencing. In addition, they're offering tutoring and counseling to children who were struggling in school or who suffer from anxiety, plus they're assisting students in completing their High School studies. PAL is needed now more than ever, as they're trying to keep children safe. At this point there's dwindling support from government sources and their successful fundraising events needed to be canceled this year, therefore they're greatly in need of donations to continue their important work with children.

I am not really go in to detail about what they do, because you can see all of that information on their website, but I will give brief info. The Bronx Defenders is a non-profit organization that provide a service in defending people's cases...basically like lawyers/ attorneys. They help represent people who cannot afford the services of lawyers. I can tell you that the individuals that work here do 100% care about what they do. I remember doing my intern in the summer of 2008, where I several other interns, and a few of the Bronx Defenders went to several communities and interviewed tenants in those neighborhoods. At the end we presented our findings to the people at the Bronx Defenders. It was a great experience overall, because we all met different people, as well as learned about their stories. I have to admit, some of the people that we met in the communities were a bit crazy, but interesting to no limit. Some people invited us into their house, which was a bit scary to do, because I did not know them, and they did not know us. I don't know if they were skeptical of us or not, but to invite us in their house...I would never do that - no way possible..lol. Great experiences.
