The majority of the teachers have master degrees from Boston College and are excellent teachers. The staff and other educators are meticulously chosen and contribute to the school at the highest level. St. John School is only Catholic elementary school (Age 2 - 6th grade) in the heart of Boston proper and is conveniently located in the North End - and close to all major employers for parents to consider. Many families attend from East Boston, Medford, Revere, Saugus and many Boston neighborhoods. The students are out-performing BPS schools on MAP testing and exceptionally prepared for junior high. The 6th grade students interested in exam schools opt in to tutoring and prep for the fall exams and outperform their peers in many instances. The school community is bar none the best. Families have left SJS and returned because the community of teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, and extended family are exceptional. You cannot find this level of care and community anywhere else! This is also the most affordable private school option for many families who want to instill a Catholic education. All the students participate in what's called the Tower Garden. Ms. Shay created a hydroponic garden that is tended by each class over the course of the year. After the greens and veggies are harvested, they are hand delivered by students to different local non profit organizations like St. Anthony's Shrine and ABCD. Having the option of afterschool from 2:30 pm - 6pm plus a variety of enrichment classes and music lessons, makes this school even more attractive and special. Tours are provided by appointment all year round. And parents are always willing to share their experiences. I should note that a 2 year old program begins in September. The school takes the role of helping shape the children's character extremely seriously and it shows in the children as they grow through the years. The families that choose Park Street are exceptional and the community is second to none. The teachers and administration truly care about the kids and want them to succeed not only while they are students at the school but also as they go on to their next schools. My children feel extremely loved and valued. The curriculum is challenging and yet the kids truly love to learn and the staff have an incredible way of making learning fun. My children attended for over three years, and I pulled them out after this school year started. Things have changed: The new director, Ms. Judy Cavanaugh is both immature and unprofessional and very disappointing in the way she treats children. Another head teacher, Ms. Shante, who was my child's teacher has poor manners and transfers "negative emotions" to children. I witnessed how she treats children in several occasions and felt extremely disappointed. In general, many staff members and teachers who function at below zero level and demonstrate so both by the way they treat children and unprofessional demeanor. The environment is extremely negative.

As a parent, the teachers feel like my partner in my child's development and they are a wonderful resource and support as we've gone through different phases. Most importantly, I feel that the staff really love and care about my kids - you can see it in the attention they give them everyday, their genuine interest to hear about their lives outside of school and their shared joy in new milestones. I've noticed a negative review here on Yelp and I'm surprised to see that. Our experience has been wholly positive even as the school has been through director transitions in the past two years (there was a (wonderful) interim director for a full school year). Some of the administration were horrible and one actually made an Acquaintance of mine cry because they made a threat to tell their parents about the people they were hanging out with (despite them having no issues). The worst one for me is that I had an IEP and they had a meeting with me about it without my parents even present or informed. I wasn't 18 or an legal adult and they had no reason to do so. Unfortunately the group of good people there doesn't outweigh the horrible ones.

There are limitless after school options, and four years of a language. When I went, they offered Mandarin, Japanese, French and Spanish. I took French. On top of everything else, they go on field trips to different countries every single year. I love everything about Snowden and even considered becoming a high school teacher just to work there, until I discovered I hate teenagers which is neither here nor there. Long story short, Snowden is a fabulous high school.
