Family Feud

Did you know Family Feud is filmed in Atlanta? I didn't either until one of my friend's families…read moreauditioned and got selected to be on the show. As a perk for being on the show, he was allowed to return to future tapings of the show as a "priority guest" and bring friends with him. No tickets required. So last Saturday, we went to the Atlanta Civic Center, where the show is currently being filmed, and were able to sit on the front row. It felt like being in NY or SoCal, but we were on Piedmont Ave. in downtown Atlanta. In short, the experience was awesome. Just a whole lot of fun. I've never been in a game show audience before and I didn't realize how energetic and participative one has to be to be in the audience, especially down in the "pit," the section closest to the stage (and most likely to be on TV). Family Feud is currently hosted by comedian Steve Harvey. It's my understanding that the show is filmed in Atlanta because of him. He carries a lot of clout. On the set, not a second of his time is wasted. If he's not hosting the show, he's interacting with the crowd, posing for photographs with contestants, talking to production assistants, etc. Whenever filming stops, there are always at least 1-2 people by his side, ready with a bottle of water, his next set of cards with questions, makeup, etc. He is definitely the one that runs the show. On that note, during back-and-forth banter with the crowd during one of the commercial breaks, Steve asked the audience what their favorite restaurant in Atlanta was. Someone said Marlow's Tavern. WTF? I said Bacchanalia. As soon as I said it, Steve stopped what he was saying and said, "Who said Bacchanalia?" I raised my hand and he looked at me. Then he silently walked over to me, stopped in front of me, said "My man!," and extended his hand over the stage so I could shake it. He then went on to talk about his experience meeting his wife for dinner at Bacchanalia, making fun of its odd location inside Star Provisions. He asked me what I did for a living and I said, "Engineer." Then he made some smart remark which caused the audience to laugh and then went on to describe the menu and how he didn't know what anything was on the menu. That was pretty cool, but that wasn't the end of my interactions with Mr. Harvey. In the subsequent taping, he fielded questions. I raised my hand and he picked me again. I asked him what his favorite NBA team was and he responded the Miami Heat and "Oklahoma Thunder." What fairweather answers, but safe I suppose. I snuck in another question and asked him if he's met LeBron James and he said he has, citing their mutual roots in Cleveland, Ohio. Makes sense. Before the taping, I knew who Steve Harvey was, but I didn't realize how engaging and comedic of an entertainer he was. The man can talk and he is funny. He could talk his way out of a paper bag. Four episodes were filmed that day. Before each episode, Steve changed his suit and tie. I got to see one family win five "days" in a row (the Grace family from Illinois), which meant they won a new car (a Ford Edge SUV). Before the taping of their fifth appearance on the show, they did a small rehearsal of how they would run to the car and celebrate winning it. That way, if they actually did win the car (which they did), they could plan out where everybody would sit/stand in and around the car. Pretty funny. It's stuff like that you don't think about watching on TV from home. It was interesting to see what goes on when the cameras aren't rolling. Makeup people are blotting off sweat from contestants, reapplying makeup, production assistants are reminding/instructing families of what's to come, an MC/motivator comes on stage to rile up and excite the audience, etc. The audience was specifically told to clap a lot. By "a lot," I mean at everything. We had to clap after every answer, even if it was a terrible answer. Example: Survey: Name something you associate with a camel. Contestant Answer: A spaceship! Audience: *cheerful applause* When an answer wasn't on the board and a team received a strike, we had to say, "Awwww!!" When answers that weren't guessed were revealed on the board, we had to read them out loud. One of the families that competed was the local McNulty family. They were led by brother Tommy (DJ at 99x and Atlanta Braves PA announcer) and his four sisters. At the end of their episode taping, they had to re-record Tommy saying an answer into his microphone, presumably to be dubbed over his live recording. I sat through three tapings which took I estimate 4-5 hours. By the end of the third taping, I was drained and had enough Family Feud for the day. I was Family Feuded out. If you're looking for something free and fun to do in Atlanta, I highly recommend attending a taping of Family Feud. It's free to be an audience member. Visit Family Feud's web site for details. The show is filmed in Atlanta every summer.

We arrived around 2:30 and was there until 9:00 pm for the taping of 2 shows. Not even a cracker was provided to eat! Cheap, ghetto and classless is what I call it! There is not even a vending machine. I never saw on any correspondence that taping would be that long and nothing to snack on available. Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey and Family Feud bring in toooo much money for not even a small pack of peanut butter crackers, a granola bar or even a 25 cent bag of chips to be served!!! I was totally disgusted and turned off by this because although it was a free taping----you wouldn't be able to do it without a live audience!! A little bit of appreciation for 7-8 hours of your time would have been nice. The staff seemed mean, over worked and underpaid. No smiles other than the production manager who had a curly natural fro ponytail. There was a heavyset black guy with a black winter beanie cap on that told my daughter the Smart Pop popcorn was for people who were there all day.! Well wtf do you call 2-9pm. Then to make matters worst, the staff and family members of the contestants are hot lunches in our faces. It was so classless! Steve Harvey and the hype man were so cool though and really provide for lots of laughs. Steve even left us on a spiritual note. He is definitely a natural comedian and speaker. Now that was a 5 star experience! Just Steve, hypeman, music, and the show itself 5 stars! The production company and the professionalism and hospitality of this place is a 3 and that's being nice. Overall, moving forward I would not recommend spending your precious off day setting around starving all day to see the show. I'll just watch from home but should you happen to read my review and go------ Eat a heavy meal before hand bc these cheap ass folks will not even provide a saltine cracker. If times are that hard they should just stop taping. I went to a few live taping and they at least provide light snacks via vending machine or free lay out. Despicable and changed the way I look at Tyler Perry Studios. Production company needs to get it together. Would never return and don't recommend!

They've committed to removing the Harry Potter pinball machine and showed that they're willing to listen, grow, and stand by their community. It means so much to see a space not just say they're inclusive, but actually live it. I seriously appreciate it and can't wait to be back. Original: I've been a huge fan of My Parents' Basement for a long time. The food is incredible, the beer list is excellent, the pinball lineup is (usually) fantastic, and the whole vibe is such a great haven for nerdy folks like me. It's one of the few places where I've genuinely felt at home -- where I believed I could show up fully as myself. That's why this hurts so much to write. MPB proudly positions itself as an inclusive, safe space -- "All Are Welcome" is literally part of the mural on the wall. But recently, they installed a Harry Potter pinball machine, and as a trans person, this felt like a deep betrayal. The creator of that franchise continues to use the wealth and platform built by those products to actively harm trans people. Every sale, every license, every new machine feeds into that system. This isn't a theoretical harm -- this is material. It funds the people working to take away our rights and our safety. It's hard to describe the heartbreak of walking into what's supposed to be a safe space and seeing that machine. It sends a message, whether intentionally or not, that some of us don't matter as much when profit or popularity are on the line. I'm sharing this not to tear MPB down -- I love this place, and I want to believe in it. I want to believe that they care about the safety and dignity of all their patrons, not just in words but in action. I hope they'll reconsider this decision. I genuinely hope they'll listen. Until then, I can't keep coming back. And that breaks my heart.

Help yourself with water & flatware, napkins, condiments etc. Very casual. We ordered the shrimp & grits for me, and a burger for the hubby. He loved his burger, very good portions, his side salad was fresh and also good sized. His burger tall, generous ingredients inside - tomato, onions, 2 slices of pickles on top. What's most important was that this burger did not fall apart when biting into it. Especially so difficult to achieve for a tall burger. My grits were good texture, I didn't like that the grits were very salty, something must have gone wrong in the kitchen. The shrimp were also salty on top of that, there were cheese. My entire dish was so salty, I drank 3 tall cups of water and was full halfway through my grits but I didn't want to take it home cos I know I wouldn't finish it when brought home. I hope they fix the level of salt otherwise, I love the consistency and texture - has some bite to the grits.

Kelise got us checked in and ensured all waivers were filled out. She gave the "kids" their ponchos and shoe covers, and while they liked the goggles for a before photo they chose not to wear them while painting. Kelise gave great instructions at the start, sharing lots of tips and explained how she could help with specialty colors and would change out water regularly. She even advised if one masterpiece is finished with lots of time left then a second could be purchased separate for only $12. It was so fun watching these four use all the different painting methods and how their masterpieces evolved and restarted. Overall I think the paint squirt gun was the favorite, with flinging coming in second place. Even with ponchos on, paint got everywhere! My daughter ended up with blue paint in her ear (LOL). They all had paint splattered in their hair, on their faces and on the clothes showing below where the poncho covered. I had instructed them to wear clothes they didn't mind getting dirty so it was all good. An upgrade to the session was a full bodysuit but just wasn't sure about the fit for teen bodies - and as long as you wear appropriate clothes I don't think they are needed. The music was on point the entire session. My crew jammed, danced and sang while they painted. They had such a great time!!! My younger two girls are so jealous they were not included and want to go soon so we will return!

And mind you, this is only my personal opinion. The concept of 29Rooms is for you to be open minded and to be positive and etc. While the message is good, I didn't think it was executed well. First thing was the ticketing. I bought my tickets early so that I can attend a "fresh" museum away from germs. Whatever the reason, they lowered the pricing and without notice I had received a certain amount refunded. I went on the website and found that they had lowered the price and I didn't get the full difference between the current pricing from when I first purchased it. I wrote back and they state that they're only committed to the refund what they had provided. Is this legal? and why am I penalized for purchasing my tickets early?! So already I've lost some $ for above reason, but on top of it, I had to cough up more $ for transportation... The day before the opening night, 29Rooms sent an email, exactly stating that "No parking is available onsite" and that uber/lyft is advised. But when we arrive in our uber, there were plenty of parking spots, at least for earlybirds like us! Thank goodness we parked in the Kroger parking lot and ubered from there, otherwise if we ubered from our house we would have spent another $80! I'm totally flabbergasted. Maybe if you plan on drinking, this may work out, but to blatantly lie about parking, this is totally wrong. Funny that the sign at the entrance states to leave negative attitude and bad vibes... While I had these thing in the back of my head, I was totally open minded. We were one of the first ones in and it wasn't what I had in mind; It wasn't 29 rooms full of photo ops. It was random art installations, sponsored rooms/activities that were part of advertisements, and area to sell snacks and drinks. I think out of all rooms, I truly only liked the last room next to the exit, pink zen room, and the activity where you draw your partner without looking at the paper. Simple activity, but gives you chuckles after looking at how hideous the pictures come out, arguing who drew it better. What made it worse however was that we were one of the first ones in, and yet none of the staff was engaging or telling us what the room were about. Like we made a full circle before staff were engaging and by that time, people were lined up and we didn't get an advantage of getting in first. Other rooms include a 90s room, neon paint room where you can paint on the blocks, strawberry tattoo station, dance room to hang out, activity room where you ask and answer random questions with strangers, room on solving a financial crisis, encouragement room where you put sticky notes on the wall, blind date room where I think you interact with strangers and their hands, and an art room to draw, work on craft, or play with playdough. So back to the message, don't exactly know how it ties down as I only saw one room that was really about positivity. While we worried that we would have to wait in long lines for the uber back, we were one of the first ones that had left and no issues what so ever. Wasn't worth it for me.

I highly recommend coming here! We were able to get in with ease. Once inside I was blown away by…read morehow cool and artistic everything was. Also they have plenty of access to food, drinks, and the restrooms are surprisingly nice! Overall we stayed the full time allowed.
