My first venture I decided for to try the vegetarian peanut curry. This was served with rice and very tasty with not a piece of Tofu in sight (not that it said there was which is why I opted for it). My second visit (the very next day) I went for Thai soup with soup really being their focus (hence the name!!). Having remembered me from the previous day, they were ahead of me with my requirements. Notably, they do have a good range of soups available and even give calorie details for them! Only down side for this restaurant is that there is no English menu. I looked them up and translated what I wanted from their website and then went to order. Whilst their English was very good, I wouldn't want them to have to run through the menu for me. However, this is typical of Hamburg at the moment, I'm hoping one day for more English menus to be available in restaurants/cafes. I had assumed that I would have to warm the soup up when I got back to the office as I tend to find takeaway hot food is not really so hot! But no! The soup was piping hot still which was great. It did slow my eating somewhat, but in a good way! and they give a little bread roll to help soak up the last bits. Service was quick so queue does go down quickly if you encounter this. I'm very pleased with this discovery.

So I guess you could say I'm a fan of this place! And I'm clearly not the only fan, as there was a lunch line every time I visited (various times between noon and 1:30). But not to worry, the line moves quite fast and you'll be eating lunch before you know it. There are various salad and soup options available, or you can create a custom salad by pointing at ingredients at the counter. I quickly learned how to say the various parts of my order in German (mixed salad, egg, beans, corn, mushrooms, tomato, parmesan cheese, balsamic dressing), though most of the staff is pretty fluent in English. Visiting from SF where a custom lunch salad can easily cost $14, the prices here (around 5-8 euros for a custom salad, depending on what you put in it) seem very reasonable. There's some indoor seating but it's pretty packed at lunch, so you may want to plan to take your meal elsewhere. Though if you do manage to get a seat and are dining alone, not to worry, they have free wi-fi! Healthy, fresh, fast, and reasonably priced, this is a great antidote to the heaviness and grease typically associated with German food.

I went with the falafel veggie salad special they had advertised on the counter with the green lovers dressing (herbs, lemon, olive oil). It had a great balance of ingredients and a nice hummus on top. Definitely a fan. Service was also surprisingly friendly despite the lunch rush. Again, other than that whole ordering in German part, I felt like I had just walked through a portal to Mixt Greens in downtown SF. The only downside is that the space is a little tight and is pretty much packed by 12:30pm. If you'd like a place to sit and don't mind getting bumped into every so often, I'd aim for right before noon and stick to parties of 2. The line always moves fast and they offer takeout, so that could be a good plan B if you happen to arrive after half of Hamburg's workforce has.

I've had mixed grills here and they were very good, but what sets this place apart (and please…read moredon't confuse it with Gazi Antep, which is on the same block) are both the döner kebab and something most westerners never think of trying, the işkembe çorbası, also known as 'panzensuppe' or tripe soup. A brief word on the döner kebab (which I get in the dürüm döner form, where the bread wrap is thin like a flour tortilla): for some reason, it is, for me, the most consistently satisfying rendering of the classic German version of the classic Turkish kebab sandwich. The combination of meats and veggies and flavorings has always been perfectly balanced. But now for the something remarkable, the işkembe çorbası. Everywhere else I've had it, and I do mean everywhere, there is far less meat, and the flavor tends to be way more dishwater. The işkembe here is loaded with both substance and flavor. You can get it with garlic, which means a spoonful of a garlic sauce, and then add red pepper flakes ('urfa biber'). You can also indulge in free veggies (like onions and whole peppers) on the side. Not only is it the best işkembe çorbası you can find, but this is one of the most delicious and satisfying soups you'll ever experience. Köz Antep is on a nice, leafy, out of the way street; it is close to the 'Dom' fun fair; it is a bit of a walk from public transportation (S-St. Pauli, or the Reeperbahn), but for me that walk whets the appetite something enormous.
