I wanted to focus on something that was practical and would have longstanding benefits besides my usual turn up! After I attended a recent yelp workshop about reiki healing, It inspired me to search for a place that focused on natural and holistic living and that's when I discovered Ms. Linda and the lovely wellness in harmony center. Being a busy social worker, auntie, daughter and all my other earthly titles, can get overwhelming, not to mention, I'm considered an "empath" so I'm sensitive to people's energies- yupp I'm weird lol. With all that going on, it can create an inbalance within and take me away from my authentic loving self. Ms. Linda worked with me to balance my energies through meditation, reiki and chakra healing. We discussed the importance of nature, plants, essential oils, bath salts and himalayan salt lamps. Overall I left feeling mentally refreshed with mindfulness and the readiness for a new start. I learned that sometimes it's okay to unplug self! Thank you, Ms Linda and Wellness and Harmony for the wonderful birthday gift!

For my second session, I went in for a chakra clearing, but after just experiencing a pregnancy loss, she suggested a longer reiki session instead to let my body heal and relax. I was so glad she suggested that and I experienced a huge shift while she took her time to create healing in my energetic and physical body. I left feeling peaceful and calm and thoroughly cared for. She really listens to what you need. I highly recommend Wellness in Harmony and will continue to work with Linda to achieve my dream of parenthood.

After 90 days of visiting this studio regularly, I decided that this wasn't the place for me. It was a tough choice. I slept on it for many weeks. See below for cons and pros. Cons...let's get the poopy stuff out of the way first --Steep pricing; I chose the monthly unlimited for $145. Classes are not cheap here, but neither is the quality of instructors. It's the age old conundrum of you get what you pay for. --Very cliquey: The other clientele do not tend to be overtly friendly to newcomers. This studio also attracts some very experienced, intense yogis. Sometimes these folks are a lil too intense a.k.a. they take themselves a little too seriously. This might just be a me thing though; I need a studio where the emphasis is more on human connection and joy than on entering a contest of wills to see who can breathe the loudest and be the most detached. --Limited access to instructors: the instructors typically enter the studio right before class and beat feet immediately after Savasana wraps, which makes it hard to build a rapport with these amazing instructors and, above all, who doesn't want to build a rapport with one's yoga instructor? --Awkward encounter: Speaking of Savasana, I inadvertently walked in on a class that was running a little bit late. Totally accidental but so not a huge deal as I was being pin-drop quiet. The instructor at the other end of the room emphatically waved her arms at me -- I suppose the equivalent of yelling with hands -- and gestured very demonstratively towards the door. I slinked out of the room. The lady apologized later, but she totally over-reacted. Her arm waving made more noise than did my footsteps. And besides, I exit and enter the studio at least once during each class to pee. Sometimes even during Savasana. I never get waved away. Probably because I'm being visibly respectful and audibly noiseless. Not sure why this particular instructor was so offended. --I wish the studio floors were a little cleaner, but by no means were they disgusting. Pros...and there are many! --Instruction: These instructors give amazing instruction. I went to a variety of classes, and I was always blown away by how methodical, detail oriented, and knowledgeable these instructors are. A few of these instructors embrace a more spiritual mindset rather than physical exertion. I really enjoyed the spiritual overtures. It made for a more connected, joyful practice. I loved whenever the instructors would give a brief summary of a passage from the owner's book. Put good vibes in the air. --The owner: The owner is exceedingly friendly and exceedingly accessible. I wish the many knowledgeable instructors at YogaLife would take a page from his book since they read from it so frequently -- especially the oddly aloof cadre of students who are working towards certification. --The receptionist: One of the receptionists -- a younger woman -- was always super welcoming, warm, and extremely pleasant. I loved interacting with her! She has a very inclusive mindset, which I found very inviting. I found many of the other receptionists to be polite and courteous as well. --Variety of classes: This facility boasts two massive studios in which many different offerings are available throughout any given day. Variety of levels offered here is also a huge plus. --Location Location Location: Conveniently located off of major thoroughfares. --Peaceful environment: Although located off of major thoroughfares, both studios are calm, peaceful, and conducive to relaxation. --This studio offers really neat seminars. I never attended any due to scheduling conflicts, but I was intrigued nonetheless! --Amenities: There are massage therapists, acupuncturists, and therapists/social workers who meet with clientele on-site, which is dope AF! I never had a chance to use any of these services, so I can't speak to the quality. I've also never seen most of these services collocated with a yoga studio, but this combo makes perfect sense!

I had never tried reiki before I met Marie. She did an excellent job explaining both the scientific…read moreand more ethereal sides of the practice, and I decided to try a first session, just to see how I felt. I arrived at her office a few minutes ahead of my appointment and filled out the necessary paperwork. The waiting room has plush furniture, smells beautiful and has soft lighting. When it was time to begin, I entered the room with a table (similar to a massage table.) The natural light pouring through the windows, calming music and lovely and minmalistic decor all added to the feeling of peace I felt immediately. I laid face up, got comfortable and the session began. Since we had talked about what to expect, I felt prepared for the hands held over points of my body (not touching), and some of what was said (some statements, some questions that are a brief conversation between her and I). But I was not prepared for the intense feelings I experienced - like glowing light radiating from my core, a soft, warm blanket enveloping my body, the feeling of my breath in my chest and my heart beat and blood in my veins more significant - both physically and mentally. The entire experience lasted about 90 minutes, but it felt more like 30-40. I was never unconscious, but felt close to a dream-like state for much of the session. Marie's voice was soothing and she herself exudes a bright energy that is both calming and invigorating. I honestly can say that the first session has already helped me. I feel more centered, more in tune with my body, more aware of the way my mind is working and how I am connected to my environment. These things are hard to quantify (I feel 60% more aware!) but I can tell you the feeling is like none other. Similar to self care routines of exercise, massage and preventive doctor visits, I will be incorporating reiki into my routine. I live in Philadelphia, but will gladly make the trip to Swarthmore to visit Marie again soon. If you are considering reiki, this would be a perfect first experience.

I will be back and I hope to be a student soon too. I recommend a visit to Marie to relax and feel fantastic. You have to try it.
