Sweet-seeming girl, but her business skills are very questionable. She was unreliable in a previous incident, saying her car was in the shop and she wasn't sure if she could use her dad's car.....then why try to book appointments with clients who feel their pets are like family?
I said I didn't feel it was a good idea to use her, it would be best to wait until she had a reliable way to make sure she could take care of our pets.
Fast forward a year later, and my husband didn't want to use her because of that, but I thought we would give her another try in watching our three well-behaved, small pets for a week. From the time we contacted her, to the interview, to the problems, it was incredibly hard to reach her via email or phone. We've used pet sitters in the past and never had this problem. She was local, so we thought that might help, but because she was very difficult to contact and wondered how reliable she would be.
When you run any business, a simple return call for business purposes shouldn't be a big problem when you have all day to do so.
At the interview, she mentioned how if she couldn't make it, she'd have someone stop by and we would meet them before, but she took two weeks to schedule our interview and we were leaving in three days. No mention of any strangers coming into the house and no mention of when we would meet this stranger or who they were! That's not safe.We were looking to hire her, not someone who might be there. Now I was getting nervous about using her, but we were coming close to the vacation time and I reassured myself that maybe her good reviews might be reliable.
The night before, we went to a restaurant where apparently a few people contracted food poisoning, including my husband and myself. We had to cancel the entire trip because we were both feeling horrible. We immediately contacted her and she had more than 24 hours notice. We can prove this with phone records and emails, yet her automated system didn't send an acknowledgment until several (7) hours later and that cut into the 24 hour notice. We even offered medical documentation!
She was greedy and claimed she would only refund HALF of our week's payment for multiple visits, even though her policy didn't say this anywhere! It only mentioned giving 24 hours notice to receive a full refund on the day visit, not the week, and if she wanted to debate the first day, then fine, keep that, but what about the other 6 days of visits? We deserved a refund to that. IT WAS IN PRINT AND SHE REFUSED TO STAND BEHIND HER OWN POLICY!
SHE ADMITTED HERSELF THAT HER POLICY WAS GRAY in an email to me and kept referring to how other pet sitters run their businesses, but we didn't use other sitters, we used her. Our agreement was based on the contract we signed with her, not someone else. My own sister has a successful pet sitting service out of state and said Elle was wrong to not refund us.
She came by, escorted by two adults. I gave her business advice to help her understand why we weren't happy, she simply nodded and thanked me. I told her I wasn't happy with the half refund and would review the agreement again, to make sure we didn't miss anything and I gave her the opportunity to work it out there but nothing. I reviewed the entire policy again and explained why we deserved a full refund but she refused.
Since then, she's changed her policies so if you do have a cancellation, documented or not, she WILL take half of your fee for however many days it is! There are many professional sitters locally who will honor a refund in full with 24 hours notice. We still have the old policy and have considered bringing her to small claims court and will file a complaint with the BBB.
If she hadn't been so greedy, I'm sure my sister would have been happy to help her learn better ways of handling her business to keep potential long-term clients, but sadly she's not responsible enough for us to trust with pets that we consider family.
In person, she's very shy, in emails, it's a different voice, very outgoing and a little pretentious....maybe a parent answering emails when they're home from work which would explain the problems in communication. When I wrote this concern, she explained she's shy and anxious, but if that's the case, I fear she might not be able to handle my pets if an emergency came up.
If she can make it to your home, she might be sweet and loving with your pets, but her level of responsibility is too questionable for us to trust with our fur babies. Be very aware of her refund policy because she won't honor a documented emergency.
The whole incident has been taxing in time and money and could have been avoided. Her greed lost a long-term customer and a few referrals, as well as solid business advice from someone who is doing this successfully. In time, she may learn, but right now, she's not any more reliable than asking the teenager on the block to watch your pets, just more costly! read more
