I placed a large order over the phone with two weeks notice. We ordered the Baked Chicken, Meatloaf, and our sides were collard greens, Mac and cheese, and bread option was corn bread. The general consensus of the food from our team was "it was alright". Speaking from a customer service perspective, it felt disorganized. The food arrived 30 minutes early, which was an issue due to not being set up, not having our truck drivers available for food, as we scheduled runs around the delivery time window... and it was an $80 delivery charge. I would hope for next time we would get better communication. We asked for cornbread and got half dinner rolls and half cornbread. Not many people were happy with the rest of the bread being dinner rolls, as we have plates reserved for people, and I wish the menu mentioned it was "bone in" baked chicken. That is an important aspect as, this was a work place luncheon, we really care about the ease of eating while we work. Collard greens could use some work, Mac and cheese everyone had mixed reviews. My friend and I visited this place seeing as he had the taste for a fried pork chop. While I had never been, we decided to give them a shot. Upon entering the restaurant it was very clean. The lady who took our order was more than nice she also gave recommendations. Seeing as we both ordered pork chops, they were cooked to order. I will say the sides are buffet style as well as some of the main courses. The service was quick, and the food was solid. In terms of soul food there are better choices in the city. This place was a nice surprise. I used to live in the university area and wish this place was here when I was. The location is tucked away between the Bank of America and the Bojangles. The food was great. I honestly was a little worried as the food was seating covered in the counter similar to a buffet style. Yet, it was actually good. I was able to get the meatloaf with collards and green beans. All the sides are prepared without meat so you could have a totally vegetarian meal if you wanted. We've been waiting for this Soul Central location to open. We stopped in for takeout on a Wednesday evening. My husband went inside to order the food. He said it was pretty nice and clean inside. I had the baked chicken (white meat - breast and wing) with a side of gravy, black-eyed peas, cabbage and corn bread. I enjoyed my food. I liked that it wasn't salty. The cornbread was DELICIOUS!! I wasn't crazy about the side of gravy for the chicken. We would more than likely go back again. They have a good amount of choices on the menu so next time I'll probably try something different. This spot just recently opened its second location on N. Tryon so I decided to check it out. I usually order online when possible for convenience when grabbing a to go meal and that's what I did here. After placing my order I received a called about 10 minutes later stating that 2 of the items I ordered were not available. Which were wings and wedges I mainly went for the wings so I asked to cancel. For some reason I was not able to have my order cancelled. They suggested I come the next day to get my order. I did just that. This was a big inconvenience it would be so much easier if they were able to update out of stock items on their ordering site. I was able to eventually get my meal the next day and the food was really good. I enjoyed everything the Mac n cheese was flavored just right. The wings were crispy and tasty. This place is "hit or miss" with the food. I've been here a few times and tried something different on each visit. Some days my meal was great and other days, not so much. I love their fried chicken, the collard greens were ok and the macaroni and cheese needs work. It didn't have much flavor More than once I've been disappointed in the cornbread. Its either burnt or too crumbly. One time I unfolded the wrapping it came in it literally fell apart. The service is sub par. I've never been treated disrespectfully but I haven't been treated like they appreciate my business. I know people can be worn out after a long day, but their employees could say "hello" or "how can I help you?" instead of just staring at me in silence when I walk up to the counter. The smothered porkchop was good, but was a relatively a small serving compared to other restaurant. Mac and cheese was below average, and yams were about average. The 2x2 inch Cornbread that comes with your meal is Jiffy Cornbread mix (as it has the same level of sweet). The potato Wedges were undercooked. The" baked" Mac n Cheese, while the least offensive, may not have been baked, rather, stove top cooked. The pork chops were smaller than the price would lead you to believe. This place is a joke. I'm from Houston and stayed in a hotel close to UNCC. I was looking for some soul food and went to the location on Tryon. First clue that I was in the wrong place...all the sides look like they're from a can and heated up. I ordered a 3-piece fried chicken meal with 2 thighs and a leg. One of the thighs was so small I didn't recognize it as a thigh. It was fried to an absolute crisp. When I asked them to bring me a different thigh, they brought me piece of chicken that had been fried with no batter...they had taken a plain, raw piece of chicken and fried it. SAD!!! They don't seem understaffed per se, but definitely need to have better organization with taking orders and dishing out the food. The mashed potatoes were dry, obviously because they didn't offer any gravy but they were. It tasted fresh and homemade. The mac & cheese was okay, if anything it tasted like a whole bunch of old bay seasoning, I like old bay but not to the point where I want to feel like I eating spoonfuls of it. I'll start with the positive, the staff was very friendly and quick to complete orders. Sadly, the food went into the trash. I requested fresh Mac and cheese because the one they had out was dried out and burnt on top. I was told they have to finish that pan first even though it was just a corner left. She eventually put out a new pan. The fish was okay, I got fried flounder which was cooked to order and fresh. The pinto beans were dry and salty. Mashed potatoes were dry. Potato wedges weren't cooked all the way through as it was still raw potato. Lastly, the chicken was not cooked all the way through. I told my sister to sit throw it away so she didn't get sick. I LOVE going here! I try to eat at this restaurant at least once a week, but it's so hard to limit my visits. The workers are so nice and I love chatting with them whilst I wait for my food.
