I happened to be in the area and wanted some soul food so I decided to give Soul Boat a try. Upon entering it's a little misleading. The store gives more of a Chinese food restaurant vibe than a soul food vibe but nonetheless I decided to order. I got a platter that consisted of fried chicken wings and fried shrimp and I chose mac and cheese and buttered corn for my sides. The chicken and shrimp were subpar. The corn tasted like it went straight from the can to my plate. No seasoning, no butter, just tasteless. The mac and cheese is the worst I've ever had sadly. I didn't even bother trying the cornbread. On a brighter note the cashier was really nice and the place was clean. I did notice a lot of people coming in and ordering fish sandwiches. Why can't the 2nd time be as good as the first? Lol. I 1st went to Soul Boat in Catonsville MD, and I loved it, wrote a review about it. So this location in Willingboro NJ is closer to home; lots of foot traffic which is a good sign. I ordered catfish chicken wings, mac & cheese, collard greens, black-eyed peas, cornbread & pink lemonade. Chicken wings were good, Catfish was good, but it came in little nuggets rather than fillets which which is what I prefer-but the portions were plentiful. My son loved the Mac & cheese as he did before. Black-eyed peas were good just a little bit dry. Collard greens were good, but I didn't order collard stems - they're the butt of the bread that you just don't want. No stems in the Catonsville MD location. The cornbread was very good & plentiful, just a smaller portion than what I received in MD. This was my first time trying the pink lemonade. It was good but a little too sweet for my taste. Very blah to look on the inside so much so that I didn't even take pic of the inside. If you are looking for ambiance , "THIS AINT IT". Order your food and leave. They have a couple of table sitting on the side but it isn't very inviting so fast forward and get your food and leave. I have been here a few times. The food has been okay. I mostly like the whiting because it is fresh, I don't have to get my hands messy, or make my house smelly from the fried fish and grease smell. The fish is light and tasty just like I like it with a crisp. They have sides like string beans but they are canned so I skipped that experience. They also have mac n cheese, and more. It you can't do better or don't feel like cooking "soul food" well then you can get there sides for a quick fix. I happy with getting my fish. They are relatively quick and seem clean. Sunday 3 October 2021 Let me start by saying I really like this place. Ordered the BBQ Shortrib platter, with collard greens and cabbage. When I got home and opened the box, the ribs were very small, and I only got 3. The cost is $15.95. Mind you the ribs were a little tough. Overall, the meal wasn't bad; however, it is not very price worthy. Reccomendation - Increase portion size to 5 pieces of ribs if they're small. read more

I ordered the whiting platter with the baked Mac and cheese through Grubhub. I read the reviews and decided to try the food for myself because sometimes reviews can be deceiving as the pictures of the food looks good. ( I believe some photos of the food are fake reviews the Mac and cheese does not contain enough cheese to be consider baked Mac and cheese)!The whiting fish was decent but chewy. The baked and cheese was absolutely disgusting! I also tried the banana pudding. It DID NOT contain any real bananas and the pudding tasted very much fake and the vanilla wafers were soggy. I have eaten here on a few occasions. There is a lack of "soul food" restaurants in the Burlington/ Willingboro area and the food here is good. Not outstanding, but I still enjoy the fried shrimp and wings special with mac n cheese and collards. I usually get their banana pudding as well which is basic--a banana cream pudding (i.e. Jello pudding) with Nilla cookies mixed in. It must be pretty good because every time I stop by to pick up my food (I call ahead) there are plenty of locals waiting for their food. Just another note; I am not so certain that I would refer to this as "authentic" soul food (it is definitely not). Just look at the owners and cooks and you know for sure they are not from the American South and are not descendants of the American South; not that I even care but I am just trying to illustrate the point that this is not the authentic homegrown dirty south BBQ ribs, neck bones, ham hocks and chit'lin-type soul food. I've been eating here for about three years. From time to time they do have a change in chef, because sometimes the food is seasoned well and other times it needs some salt and pepper and the yams need some sweetening. But if you let them know they do try to make it better. The portions are good and sometimes I have a little left for a snack. I sometimes order Ox tail and they put plenty of Ox tail on a bed of rice and gravy (the third vegetable, please note I said 3 vegetables), not like some of the other restaurants in the area (High Street, Cooper Street), who ration the small pieces of Ox tail out like you didn't pay almost $14 for that plate and mind you there is no third vegetable or corn bread. My mother owned a restaurant for 18 years, so I know good restaurant food and good size portions. I like Soul Boat because I get decent food with portions that don't leave me hungry. Just a little more seasoning for five stars. So until those others restaurants step up their games, Soul Boat will continue to be the front runner or until someone better comes to town. read more
