There are a few places in the US that cultivate and develop boys to become gentlmen. This is one of…read morethem. A true diamond amongst the rough. The Tilden Study Center offers and features professional development, mentorship, spiritual and moral formation, camaderie, and brotherhood. The men inside are true gentlemen: intelligent, cultured, humble, sophisticated, respectful, and generous. The center itself is located 5 min from UCLA. I started going in 2012, when a friend from class invited me to one of their Friday activites, which consisted of a meditation, dinner, and a talk from a UCLA professor on a variety of topics. From the 1st day, I fell in love. The dinner was delicious and the talk was insightful. But the real gold was the meditation. The meditation challenged me, making me reflect on my character, weaknesses, and purpose as a son, brother, friend, student and member of my community. Week after week, I went to hear these incredible, thought-provoking meditations. I walked away feeling so refreshed; my mind was blown. Christian doctrine and Biblical passages were incorporated so brilliantly in each meditation. I continued going for 2 more years until I graduated. The message was clear and simple: we are called to be saints in our ordinary lives. We must do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. We must love, forgive, befriend, serve, lead, listen. The wisdom and truth was further reinforced in other activities and events throughout each month, providing me with the foundation and values necessary to be the gentleman I've always wanted to be and the saint I am called to be. I met some of my best friends through Tilden. I was taught professional skills and moral values which I had been searching for my whole life and which unfortuntely are not taught in school. TILDEN is one of the best things to happen to UCLA and the community. I had the privilege to assist in their high school leadership and development program. Tilden has my respect, support and admiration until I pass.

Reading to Kids - Read a story aloud - volunteer at our reading clubs, held the second Saturday of each month.

My 400th Yelp review!…read more @ReadingtoKids is a grassroots organization that aims to inspire the love of reading to children living in underprivileged areas of Los Angeles. Every second Saturday of the month, volunteers go to different elementary schools in the LA area. At these schools volunteers read books to kids that range in age from kindergarten to fifth grade. (Currently there are seven different elementary schools that Reading to Kids volunteers read at. They are Alta Loma Elementary School, Esperanza Elementary School, Gratts Elementary School, Los Angeles Elementary School, Magnolia Elementary School, Politi Elementary School and White Elementary School). Volunteers come from all walks of life. From students to young professionals, all have a common goal of improving the reading and learning skills of elementary school kids. Reading to Kids volunteers are dedicated to giving these kids the opportunity to succeed in life. At the end of each volunteer session, the kids are given prize books that they can take home. The hope is they can acquire many prize books that will help them further love reading. One of the most endearing moments for me as a volunteer was when at the end of the reading session, a little kindergarten boy came up to me and asked if I could read his prize book to him. As I sat down to read the prize book, more kindergarten kids circled around me and together they listened and pointed to the different pictures in the book. The smiles on the kids faces after was so heartwarming. Soon after one of the parents walked up to me, smiled and said "Thank you." That too was another wonderful moment. Many of the elementary students that come to these reading clubs do not have the privileges that most kids have. They do not have the advantages of having a library, of having a Barnes and Nobles at every corner or of having the latest cell phone. Many come from low income families, they live in impoverished areas and English is their second language. The fortune of these kids comes in attending these Saturday morning reading clubs. These kids go to these reading clubs because they want to learn. They want to succeed. They want the opportunity to have a better life. Seeing these kids so eager to read and to learn, is a humble reminder that learning is a privilege that many take for granted. I love Reading to Kids and I'm thankful to my high school friend who first introduced me to this great volunteering opportunity. The elementary schools kids are simply endearing. I also am amazed by all the good hearted people who volunteer. I am in much admiration of the amount of folks that go out and sacrifice their Saturday mornings to volunteer. (Some stats: Reading to Kids has an average of about 300 plus volunteers reading to an average of 780 plus children every month). I being a volunteer myself know that giving up a Saturday is totally worth it. The opportunity to be able to make a difference in these kids' lives and give them a better chance to succeed in life is simply priceless.

Saddened by how badly the educational system had failed these kids I wanted to do something for them. I wrote a letter to Scholastic and they sent over boxes and boxes of books so we could create a library on campus! Around that time I somehow got on the Reading to Kids e-mail newsletter and have been meaning to get involved. I finally signed up and did it! Here's how easy it is to get involved. -Sign up online -Show up (they provide a light breakfast) -Read to the Kids -Do an arts and crafts project with the kids -Go to El Cholo for free appetizers and meet other volunteers -Repeat once a month You can read to kids from kindergarden to 5th Grade. You read in pairs. You get anywhere from 3-8 kids. It's so easy and these kids are so fun to be with, I think everyone should spend one Saturday a month doing this!

She and her girlfriends are all huge art appreciators and museum goers. I thought a "behind the scenes" art tour would be right up her alley. I consider myself pretty plugged in to the LA art scene - however, I was referred to a company that I had never heard of - ART MUSE LA. Art Muse Los Angeles is a community of art historians, artists and educators who offer small groups private art tours - in museums, galleries, artist studios and private collections - throughout the LA region. What a stroke of luck! I was put in touch with Clare Kunny, the owner and Director. She was incredibly charming, smart, and approachable on the phone. I told her I was looking for a curated art tour, something more than your typical museum docent tour. She emailed me with several fantastic, diverse ideas. I opted for a two-hour tour with a theme around women in the arts. Our guide, Susan Power, was incredibly knowledgeable. She highlighted contributions to American art of the LA-NYC gallerist Virginia Dwan at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Then we walked across the street to Spruth Magers gallery to tour the exhibition POWER displaying art made by African American women from the Civil War era to the present. Susan gave an in depth talk on both subjects in conjunction with her choosing select artworks that showed the strength of and vision of these women artists. My mother and her friends were blown away. She is still talking about it. If you're looking for something interesting, fun, and unique to do in LA - for a date night, for something to do for fun with friends, for a special occasion - I highly recommend checking out Art Muse LA. They are a gem in the rough. Thank you Art Muse LA for making my mother's birthday so incredibly memorable and special!
