We had to wait 45 minutes to get into this restaurant, and another 30 minutes for the pizza to be given to us, but I have to say it was worth it I ordered the basic Margherita Pizza here - and it was really cheap - around 5.5 euros This pizza was amazingly good The first thing I have to mention was how incredibly fresh the tomatoes were. I haven't eaten tomatoes this good on a pizza before, they felt super authentic and local The crust wasn't as airy as another place I've been, but it was still quite soft and pleasurable to eat. The bottom of the crust, though, was unparalleled. It was so unbelievably soft, and didn't even feel like you were eating pizza. A lot of the pizza I've eaten in the past has included this hard bottom curst that's noticeable, but this bottom crust just floated through each bite like butter. Holding up a slice was so floppy The cheese was also fantastic - I do wish there was slightly more of it - but it was still amazingly good I tried a bit of a vegan pizza that someone at my table ordered - and my god that was astoundingly good - even better than the margherita I had. If I was here again I would definitely order the pizza that had white sauce rather than tomato sauce - because even though the tomatoes were really good, I think I just prefer the alfredo-style sauce on pizza. read more

Multiplie locations exist, six in Naples, three on the same street! At first I wondered if it was a "Ray's Pizza" situation* though turns out they are all legitimately related, arising from the success of the pizzeria opened in by Gino Sorbillo. Aside from Naples they have locations in several other Italian cities (Rome, Milan, Bergamo, Turin, Bologna, Padua, and Genoa), even a location on Tokyo. This specific location where the pin is dropped on the Yelp map is for Gino e Tito Sorbillo, eponymously named for the now famous pizza chef and his brother, and the nicer sit-down version of the restaurant.** This is the original shop where it all began, and the business' historical headquarters. Outside, you'll see a couple paper cutouts of the chef, with a chef's coat and a smile. The unwavering popularity of their pizza is undeniable--one look at the crowds outside this storefront and it's immediately apparent. Be prepared as the wait is not for the faint-hearted or the extremely hungry. Luckily I had a snack before arriving (see separate review for Sfogliatelle Mary). 9:05pm: I arrived to a semi-circular crowd centered around the doorway of Gino e Tito Sorbillo. Headed up the hostess stand and she said 20-25 minutes so I figured why not. 9:30pm: the crowd around the door seems to have increased, at least stayed the same, a handful of parties were called up. I realize now that the hostess gives everyone the same estimate. Watching many parties that were there when I arrived--they are still waiting too. 9:50pm: I'm considering leaving at this point since there's significant second-hand smoke from multiple people smoking outside, though the crowd of people in front of the restaurant is going strong. 10:00pm: I go up to the stand and ask how much longer the wait will be, she says "oh you're a single diner right? I forgot, let me check." 10:05pm: she calls my name and ushers me inside. I'm seated at bar table seating at a window which works for me. Staff is quick to pass a menu, and take an order. 10:20pm the wait for the pizza after ordering was faster than expected. It only took about 7-8 minutes. Getting to the pizza--if you look up the definition of a Neapolitan style pizza, this is it! Served straight outta the oven as an entire pie, extremely thin, saucy in the middle, floppy base though evenly leopard-spotted on the bottom and the crust, pillowy and airy crust with a slightly crisp exterior. The tomato sauce was very fresh, and I loved the varying texture of the dough, great baked/slightly charred flavor. I got the Antonio which included regionally sourced cherry tomatoes, olives, capers, anchovies, basil. While I love both ingredients, the fish and capers together unfortunately were way too salty, I had to pick off some of these. Also I have to say as the pizza cooled, the room temp saucy dough wasn't quite as appealing as when it was hot. lol so if you consume it quickly it'll be fine! The serving size was also very generous, see pic with my hand next to the pie, I couldn't finish it in the end! Staff was quite friendly overall and I appreciated that they didn't pack the house or rush diners inside even with so many people waiting. That being said it was still pretty busy so you'll have to flag them down. After the meal, bring your bill up to the register to pay. *if you're familiar with NYC you'll know there are about 20 different Ray's Pizzas all claiming to be the original, which one is real? no one knows... **The other two locations on the same street are more casual, one is a takeout spot probably to handle the overflow from the main restaurant. read more

There are three pizza shops right next to each other all named Sorbillo. This is the one on the corner with SORBILLO etched in glass above the entrance. We stopped in for a late supper on a busy Friday night. They sat us right away. They were friendly and the food and drinks came out quick. My wife had a apperol spritz and I had an imported Belgian beer, as I was wanting something other than a Peroni. My wife likes apperol spritz and said it was the best one she had on the trip. We shared a buffalo mozzarella pizza with delicious sauce and a magically this crust. Picture attached. This is a cute place with nice indoor and outdoor seating. They have 2 locations: one is a proper sit down restaurant and the other is a take away with some indoor and outdoor space with a couple tables. Gino e Toto Sorbillo has more modern pizzas, with creative topping combinations. Hearing about the lines, I had expectations for this place, but the restaurant was nearly empty when we went. We ordered two pizzas, the Nduja (Nduja sausage + a plain sausage) pizza and the Blue Cheese (prosciutto + blue cheese + fig jam) pizza. To be honest, I still prefer the traditional Margherita pizza. The two sausages were good individually, but I'm not sure they worked well together, because the Nduja one was a lot spicier and overpowered the other sausage. It would have been better if only Nduja sausage was used, and used sparingly. The combination of prosciutto + blue cheese + fig jam sounded cool, but a milder cheese like Pecorino would have paired better with the salty prosciutto. So I'm not sure if their "innovative" flavor combinations worked (1 star off). Moving onto their dough, they mentioned that their dough recipe uses high hydration. No wonder the dough was quite soggy for both pizzas (1 star off). The center of the pizza was like a tomato-cheese-bread soup. There's a reason why there's a crowd outside at all times- this is really legit Neapolitan pizza. Not all pizza in Naples is made equally and, after having a mediocre experience at another pizzeria, we decided to go to Sorbillo since it was recommended by three different friends who have all lived in Naples. This spot is popular amongst the locals, other Italians, and tourists alike. Be prepared to wait in line... well, not so much a line but more like a mob. You'll have to elbow your way through to get to the hostess to put your name on the waitlist. The hostess had no estimation of a wait time and was calling names out on a microphone with really poor sound quality. It was all very chaotic. If you're tired of waiting, you can do what we did and place an order for takeout inside. Our pizzas were ready within 15 minutes and stayed nice and hot as we found a piazza to enjoy them at. The crust is nice and chewy and thin - exactly what you'd expect in a Neapolitan pizza. The cheese and tomato tastes so fresh as well. Ahoy, we have come to the motherland of Pizza, Naples and one of its flagship experiences here at Gino Sorbillo Antica Pizzeria. First, avoid any confusion as you wander around Naples...there are a handful of places with "Sorbillo" in the name, including one just a few feet away from this one. Make sure you're at the one which undoubtedly has a long line, which has the word "Geno" in its sign with blue rays on the top. Odds are if you go to another "Sorbillo", the pizza will still be pretty good, as our guide told us, there really isn't bad pizza in Naples, especially not here on pizza street...but if you do want the authentic Gino Sorbillo experience, with its many many offerings on its menu (most places just have a few different pies), then this is the right place. Also, note there isn't a line...it kind of looks like there is, but if you want to dine in, head directly to the store where someone will put your name down...then go wait anywhere you want until they call you. We got there relatively early and were seated in about 10 minutes or so. The pizzas menu was extensive with many, many options, many suitable for us vegetarians. (and a vegan one too if you swing that way.) And, unfortunately, there is no menu in English (or on their website) so we had to do a lot of google translate work to wade through it...our server spoke perfect English and guided as a bit to something that was his "Summer Favorite" the Nonna Carolina, which was a pesto, cheese and tomatoes...it had a nice smoke to it and was unique. We also got the Margherita Buffala D.O.P. Pizza which he indicated was the classic one. It was our first pizza in Naples and we were surprised that it was not really a hand food but quickly learned this is how it's served throughout the city...not a mistake...pizzas are fork and knife foods...Once you get past that expectation, it's SUPER GOOD...a nice light and crispy crust and a big dollop of for di latte mozzarella in the middle...so original recipe Margherita here...just as it should be, especially if it's your first pie in Naples. We also enjoyed the wine, and then after dinner a couple of limoncellos helped us, especially during the heat wave that was happening both outside and inside. We went to a number of other pizza places in Naples during our stay. This was our first. It was really good. Naples, the birth place of pizza, the holy grail. Among the most famous, Sorbillo pizza, a family-owned and operated restaurant which has grown and built quite a reputation over generations. I knew it was extremely popular and that there would be a line. We managed to finally make our way over a little over an hour before their closing and oh my goodness, I could not believe the massive crowd that was formed outside their doors. We got in line but after waiting 10-15 minutes with little hope of moving, we decided to hop over to their sister restaurant instead. An hour passed and we saw the same girl that was in front of us finally at the top of the line. However, we came to realize this was just the line to get your name ON THE BOOKS to enter the restaurant. Holy Cow. We tried our luck the following morning and arrived maybe 15-20 minutes after opening and WE WALKED RIGHT IN! To our delight, they led us to the rustic basement seating which filled up really fast. There's a variety of pizza options made from many locally sourced ingredients around the region. Despite the high-quality, specialty ingredients, I could not believe the affordable prices I was seeing. We ended up ordering 3 pizzas -- the classic margherita bufala DOP, pizza diavola, and mortadella bologna which was only around $25. They are thin pizzas and require a fork and spoon to eat. We took one bite and were mind blown at the explosion of flavors that was happening. I thought, "it's just pizza. How good could it be right?" Holy sh&t, this is it, guys. THIS IS IT. Hands down, the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life. Simple, clean ingredients, but so well prepared and just beautiful. I cannot even begin to explain how delicious this was. To not have a 5 star review from me for a Naples Pizzeria is telling. In the US, this would be a 5-star all day. However, compared to some of the other top pizza places in Naples, this fell just a little short. Our favorite of all time, in Naples or anywhere, is Pizzaria Antica de Michele ... which is 3 blocks away from this. We went there an hour and ten minutes before they closed and they had already stopped taking new customers. Imagine that! We were so bummed but decided to speed walk over to Gino e Sorbillo, which closes an hour later. Located in a somewhat grimy and packed ally, there were several storefronts with Sorbillo on the front, which confused us. Luckily, our walking directions led us past the other Sorbillo locations (not sure what they were) and to the real deal. You'll see a big crowd of mostly teens in front. There were a lot of bachelorette parties. At the doorway, there is a woman at a table who will take your name for a spot. When your table is ready, you will be called over a very unclear loudspeaker, so you (might) know that your table is ready. Across the street are bars, which allow you to have a drink outside while you wait for your name to be called. This system is SO much better than the utter shit show chaos of De Michele! While I dream about their pizza, I have nightmares about their line system. Sorbillo is somewhat more civilized. We waited about 30 minutes until our name was called at 10:00 p.m. on a weekend night. This place is utterly huge inside, so there is more seating than you'd think, which keeps the line moving fast. This feels more restaurant-y than De Michele, which feels more cafeteria-like. Oddly, we preferred De Michele's less cozy interior. Our waiter at Sorbillo was much more lively and personable than others ... he had us laughing and feeling at home. The menu is very long and somewhat confusing ... a lot of the other famous pizza places have 2 or 3 options only. This place is more like what you'd find in the US in that there are lots of toppings you can order on your pizza. We wanted the classic ... however there are 3 versions here: - Margherita (6 euro) - Margherita Extra (more cheese) (7 euro) - Margherita Special (bufalo mozzarella cheese) (8 euro) The waiter said that they were most famous for their bufalo mozzarella pizza ... which is the exact opposite of what De Michele says ... they recommend flor di latte (regular) mozzarella. We wanted to go as classic as possible, so we got one regular Margherita and one bufalo. As tempting as extra cheese was, because of how delicious Naples cheese is, we stuck with the originals. We honestly couldn't really tell the difference between the two pizzas when they came. While the typical wonderful sweet but slightly acidic tomato flavour was present, we didn't feel blown away by the cheese. It was less melted than other pizza places we tried ... in fact, some pieces were still a bit rubbery. The center of the pizza seemed a bit too moist, compared to other places. I understand that Neopolitan pizza should be moist in the center. I am not one of these US hicks who complains that their pizza is soggy in the center ... or that the crust is burned ... despite those being the hallmarks of real Italian pizza. However, having eaten many famous pizzas in Naples, the center was just a bit too wet for my liking. In any US restaurant, this would be utterly orgasmic pizza. In Naples, it was very good and we enjoyed it ... but it wasn't the perfect pizza experience we still dream about at Antica da Michele. Perhaps the giant cardboard photo stand up of the owner in front ... or the rapid expansion of the brand all over the world (New York, Tokyo, Miami, Los Angeles) ... sort of planted a subliminal 'tourist trap' seed in our minds from the start. Overall, you won't be dissapointed if you come here ... and its hard to complain about a giant pizza with amazing ingredients for under $10 ... less than a Dominos pizza in the US! Italy is absolutely fabulous, and yes, it's true that you will want to eat your way through the country. And I'm here to tell you that you absolutely should. You will want to try all the food! Naples, Italy is where you want to go for pizza. It literally is where this gastronomic delight was invented. There are less than a handful of these original restaurants around, and Sorbillo is one of them! Diners tip: be prepared to wait in line, and I highly recommend going before they open. There is always a line and it's easiest to get in/wait in line prior to opening. Seating in the restaurant may look fairly limited, because frankly it is. They have seating in the main dining area, and then additional seating, both upstairs and downstairs. You will either be seated at a small table that is literally close to someone else, or, at one long table with others. Regardless of where you're sitting, be prepared to order when the waitress comes by, or you'll be waiting until she feels like it to stop by again to take your order. When you do place your order, order everything at once, because the restaurant from the moment they open, until they close, is beyond busy. The menu has absolutely anything, and everything to choose from, and you will want to try at all. Naples is known for the creation of the Margherita pizza, I highly recommend that you try it. It's simplistic and basic, but it's absolutely delicious. The restrooms are located downstairs, and by downstairs, it's a spiraled built in staircase of sorts, that leads you to a glorified version of an outhouse shared with both men and women. User beware. A little easier to get in than other places but just as good if not better. We ended up coming here twice. First visit was for the classic pizzas - the margarita and the marinara. Super thin crust on the bottom with the light and fluffy edges. The sauce was sweet from the local San Marzano tomatoes. This is definitely knife and fork pizza. I know a lot of Americans dont like this kind of pizza but it was really spectacular! The second time we tried the anchovy pie (I believe it was the Antonio) and a pie designated Slow Food with a spicy salami and goat cheese. I wish I could remember what that was called but regardless, excellent. If you go to Naples, put this on your list. You wont regret it. read more

Had dinner with my family at Sorbillo. I was surprised that we went on a night where there was no line for dinner. I must say the food was excellent, the service was good and the prices were reasonable. Like other popular restaurants, there was a cover charge for each diner. This is as an excellent choice to get a good meal. read more

I love pizza! I'm so happy we dined at Sorbillo during our day in Naples. We knew the restaurant would be busy. We arrived at 11:50 and the line was already long for their opening at 12. We were seated upstairs upon opening. It's a large restaurant! The menu is huge with many pizzas to choose from and it's all in Italian. We ordered the Luciano and the Diavola. I loved the crust. The pizzas are thin with the most delicious crust. It's airy and chewy. So easy to eat. Sorbillo is definitely worth a stop! read more

One of the most famous places in Naples, the birthplace of pizza. This place lived up to its reputation. There is usually very long line (about an hour) but we were able to squeeze in right before closing and and waited about 20mins. Pizzas are so reasonably priced here, around 6-8 euros. We went with the recommendations of the classic margherita bufala DOP and pizza diavola. The pizzas came out so fresh. They are thin so require fork and knife. The flavor was out of this world. Definitely worth a try! I would go back if I could! read more

Had high expectations as this place is really raved about on social media and even received a Michelin star. As a person who lives in Chicago and has visited New York - I have had exceptional pizza so for this being the birthplace of pizza and a famous Michelin star pizza spot I had high high expectations. I would rate the pizza here a 6/10 The wait was long - which was excepted Probably waited around 45 mins - have to stay in the area because they call out names and its really easy to miss Some positives Service was fast, really fast and and servers were very attentive Prices were very cheap The nutella dessert cup was incredible!!!! - get this desert ! The pizza itself is overhyped - its just ok It is thin crust which I love, but this one was so thin it was a soggy mess It felt like there was something missing, not sure how to explain it but if you have had Chicago or New York pizza this will probably be a let down read more

I'll start by saying the pizza is delicious! Crispy yet chewy crust and fresh ingredients. We also loved the fried pizza, comes piping hot and very quickly. If you catch them when there's no line, definitely recommend. Now, the reason for taking off two stars is our experience before sitting down. We arrived around 7pm and put our name on the list...we were told it would be about a 30 minute wait. No problem, we grabbed drinks across the street! 30 minutes later, still not seated but still not a problem, we got another drink. After 1.5 hours, the street was so crowded it was hard to move. We went to the hostess to inquire about the wait and she told us we were next. 30 minutes later, six tables sat ahead of us and being pushed around by people trying to walk by...the hangry-ness started to set in. We knew there would be a wait since this place is so popular but we wish they had been more honest about the wait time so we could have walked around or gotten a quick aperitif somewhere else while we waited. So my advice, if you want to try this place - expect a long wait but a hot pizza when you finally do get seated. We noticed a lot do people were ordering takeaway (and only waiting 15 minutes) and the taking their pizzas to a curb nearby to enjoy. read more

I went to the location by the water. This was my first pizza of my Italy trip. I ordered the margherita pizza and it was really good. I personally thought the sauce was a little under seasoned but the crust was really good. My pizza also came out a little more charred than I had expected it to me. Yet another (rate) 5 star review on our Italian tour and of course it goes to a pizzeria. This one has wold reputation so we to try it out . Waited 35 mins in line and then got seated Don't expect a descent service or an English menu , these guys are focused on making the most amazing pizza and don't seem to care about anything else (yes, I'm still waiting for the chilli peppers I asked 10 hours ago...) We again tried a variety of pizzas - the fungi one (rudolfo I believe ) , two of the perciutto and arugula, one pesto pizza and the one with black olives and capers . All of them were incredible - you would need to eat them with a fork and knife b/c the dough is thin and the toppings are heavy... Bonus points go to the tomato-sauce based pizzas (fungi , olives/capers) b/c of the fresh and tasty sauce . This adds so much. All heartily Recommended , do not miss if you're in Napoli . read more

Best. Pizza. Ever!!!!! Went on a Mediterranean Royal Caribbean Cruise, which traveled from Rome to Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Naples was my last excursion, so I wanted to make the most of it. After looking for a while, I ultimately decided to go to Sorbillo for pizza. It was beyond amazing. My family ordered one Margherita pizza and one prosciutto pizza. We split the two between the four of us. The dough was amazing- thin, how I like it. The sauce was delicious, and the cheese was melty and fresh. The bill came to 27$, a VERY good price for real, fresh Neapolitan pizza. Overall, my family and I left more than satisfied and this was an experience we will never forget. read more
