I was unfortunately not able to attend a Yelp event held at Sopile this week so when a friend invited me to dinner last evening - my choice of where to eat - the choice was clear - Sopile!
Sopile is a restaurant specializing in Istrian cuisine - cooking from one of my favorite parts of Europe. And though I more often go to the Slovenian part of Istria (Piran), the cuisine is very similar to the Croatian side of Istria which this restaurant represents. The meal last evening was very delicious. For a starter I ordered a tasty Blitva. The Swiss chard, potatoes, and olive oil were blended and sautéed perfectly. For my main course I enjoyed a Križanski rižanci (corn noodles with the famous Karst ham served in a bean cream sauce). Olive bread added nicely to the flavors while one of my favorite wines - a Slovenian Refosco - was the perfect accompaniment. The pleasant wait staff served complimentary Krostole (what my grandmother called angel wings) to bring a sweet ending to the meal. The atmosphere is very warm ... and yes they even have two sopiles on display. Now if only someone was sweetly playing one of them!
I can easily walk to this restaurant from where I live. I'll just have to walk to Sopile again soon! read more
