Some of the negative reviews, particularly those with one or two stars, appear to come from individuals with personal grievances or exaggerated complaints. They simply don't reflect the reality we've experienced. Carousel is a disciplined and focused studio that offers serious dance training. This is not a recreational center or casual after-school program--it's a place for students who are committed to developing their craft. The instruction is exceptional, with a strong emphasis on proper technique that, in my opinion, is unmatched in this area. Importantly, the environment is also healthy and supportive. In the five years we've been at the studio, I've never once heard a teacher make a negative comment about a dancer's body or weight. On the contrary, Natalie teaches dancers how to fuel their bodies properly for training and often encourages healthier choices--like skipping sugary snacks or drinks--purely from a nutritional standpoint, not as criticism. It's always been about education, not shame. She IS tough but also loving and the kids idolize her and want to impress her. In fact most of the teachers are firm but nurturing. They genuinely care about each student and push them to be their best. My daughter was not on the company her first year, but she was always treated with respect and never made to feel less than others. Now that she is on the company, she is held to higher standards and expected to set an example for younger dancers, which we fully support. Unlike many studios, Carousel has very little of the typical "dance mom" drama. The families here are supportive, and the dancers are inclusive and kind. My daughter has built friendships both on and off company, and there's a real sense of community. At recitals, dancers who are not on the company are still given opportunities to shine. I recently attended the recital, and I saw numerous non-company dancers featured in solos and highlighted performances, directly contradicting the claims that only company members are showcased. Before finding Carousel, we briefly attended Dance Dimensions. Despite attending for two weeks, my then 10-year-old daughter was never included or welcomed by the other dancers. In contrast, on her first day at Carousel, several girls immediately invited her to join them and made her feel at home. This studio isn't the right fit for every dancer--but that's part of its strength. Carousel values dedication, work ethic, and respect. Students who embrace those values will thrive. Karen and Natalie, the directors, are passionate about what they do and committed to developing strong, technically proficient dancers. They prioritize quality over quantity and are not interested in simply filling spots. THIS IS KEY. If your kid works hard, makes dance a priority, has a good attitude and is kind.... and YOU are not difficult.... your child will do wonderfully here. Additionally, Carousel is extremely mindful of cost. Compared to other studios in the area, it is significantly more affordable. Claims that it's "all about the money" are completely unfounded in my experience. They actively look for ways to reduce financial strain on families--recycling costumes, keeping competitions local, and organizing fundraisers. I've consistently found that they do everything they can to help families manage expenses. I never feel pressured to buy anything I don't want. I appreciate the drop in classes for younger kids so that if we skip I am not throwing away money. Lastly, my younger child takes recreational classes at Carousel and absolutely loves it. The teachers are kind, patient, and age-appropriate, and I've never witnessed any harshness or negativity toward younger dancers. In short, if you're seeking a studio that offers exceptional dance training in a respectful, supportive, and disciplined environment, I wholeheartedly recommend Carousel. It's been a wonderful experience for both of my children and our entire family. Be on time, be dressed appropriately and come with a good attitude and work ethic and your kid will be fine.

This is a review for parents with kids…read more I am talking about West Valley Dance Academy. I've taken my now close to 4 year old to this studio for the past 6 months, and every day has been great! The school is owned and operated by Lisa Tran. Lisa is a mother and former dancer herself, so she understands both. Lisa teaches many classes herself, and from what I've witnessed, all the kids learn + have a lot of fun. My daughter's main teacher is Kate Newham -- and my daughter loves her! She actually asks before we go if we'll be seeing Miss Kate. Miss Kate is so kind and understanding of all the little kids needs. Many of them, as we all know, just say what's on their mind at any time. Kate always listens, but directs the kiddies back to dance. Also. At no time do the kids just run around and do what they want. Miss Kate has the innate ability to reach them, and keep them dancing. It is a wonderful sight to see, One of the other hi-lights of the school is the ability to watch your children dance, even if you are at home. Lisa sends out a link allowing one to watch their kids progress in the world of dance. Many times, I am watching my daughter from the waiting room, while my wife is viewing from work. Oh yeah, parents aren't allowed in the actual dance studio. You just wait in the comfortable lobby, and watch from there. I should also mention, if one day your little one has to miss a class, they can easily make it up another day They also sell dance shoes, and clothes, in case your tiny dancer needs it. Everything one might need is right there at the studio. I know this school takes older kids too. So don't worry about that. They also put on recitals throughout the year for the bigger kids. Can't wait for my Callie to be in one herself. I usually try to put price of classes, but since my daughter is still in the toddler stage, I can tell you that it is more than reasonable. During the pandemic, masks were required for every person who was in the building. As of right now, masks are optional. I can guarantee, if things change, Lisa will be at the forefront, and mask wearing will be mandatory once again. What I tell people looking for a dance class, is to call West Valley Dance Academy, and request an intro class, so you can see if it works for you and your family. That's what we did, and have not looked back

Our…read moreoldest has moved on to other interests, but our 7-year-old continues with ballet and loves it. I've watched Elite grow from a smaller studio into the powerhouse it is today. Elite is an excellent dance studio, from day one through their very polished recitals. It's important to note that this is not a cutesy/playtime type of studio. Dance is a discipline, and so dress code and presentation are taken seriously. For first-timers, that might feel a little intimidating, but there's a reason behind it. Hair and makeup need to be spot-on for recitals, because there's always a chance your cute 3 or 4-year-old might get on stage and just stand there! But guess what? They'll look fantastic doing it. And then, year after year, you'll see their confidence and ability grow. As a parent, you will need to stay on top of recital packets to know who/what/where/when, and I find Elite to be very thorough in the material they send out, or if you simply call them ahead of time. Another perk.. they have a professional photographer who takes photos on stage and backstage at shows/recitals for FREE. As well as a videographer, which is very much appreciated. The owner, Toni, taught my oldest years ago and is fantastic, both as a teacher and as a business owner. Neither of my girls have ever been on team, but both have always enjoyed their classes. The teachers are wonderful with age-appropriate instruction (shout out to Miss Princess with the littles) and technique. My 7-year-old only takes one ballet class currently, yet she could not be more excited to be performing in The Nutcracker for her second year in a row. Needless to say, we love Elite!

They have all genres of dance, but it always felt they prioritized the competition dance team, which isn't our thing. As a result, when we moved to the San Fernando Valley, we decided to stick with a more traditional Ballet school academy environment. No competition team type places. We ended up in downtown LA. But during covid, we really had some challenges and my son wasn't able to get back in a studio for many many months. I found California Dance Academy on social media and saw that they were doing Nutcracker outside. I emailed them and ask if my son could take class with them for a while until our school opens again. They were dancing outside and following all covid precautions until case numbers came down and county restrictions allowed indoor classes again. They followed everything to a T and kept dancers safe. No cases were spread within the studio. Everyone we met here was fantastic. No drama. And truly solid classical ballet instruction. I'd have previously written this place off because we were looking to get away from competition environment, but California Dance Academy treats both classical ballet and competition as equally valuable. They develop strong dancers and train kids up in the area the kid wants to go. Their focus is art and solid instruction. My son's school downtown reopened and he was genuinely sad to leave California Dance Academy. But I have to write this review and just say that whether it is classic ballet or more commercial style dance you are looking for, this is a great school with great people. They are helpful, transparent, kind, and honest people.

PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING A DECISION TO ENROLL!!…read more I wanted to wait an adequate amount of time before posting this to see if it was still worth posting. I almost didn't but I don't want any one else to go through the same thing I went through. I was a past student at Jama's Beauty and Barber College and think that people SHOULD NOT attend this school. There is so many wrong things with this school. Firstly, the director Ms. Jama and the school itself. Many have described her as controlling and rude. So many students have complained about her. Most of the cosmetology students either dropped out or transferred to a different school (NOT BECAUSE THEY GRADUATED). One day the entire cosmetology room was filled, the next less than 10 students remained. Many of the students that did transfer talk about how they're learning so much stuff at their new schools compared to this one. How they're new school is so much better and how they're glad they left this one. How their instructor here lacked and felt like they didn't learn anything from her. A student on the esthetician side had complained about the door beeping from the wind (makes a sound when the door opens) and about the uncomfortable seats to Ms. Jama. Ms. Jama called her a "Little princess" despite their concerns being reasonable. The same student broke down weeks later because of how they disliked the school so much and how it drained them. Many of the other students agreed. That student later dropped out. Another time a student had requested new towels be bought since both esthetician students and cosmetology students were using the spa room. Esthetician students had been rotating laundry, THE SECOND a load was done, another was added. Ms. Jama responded with "No you guys need to stay on top of the laundry that's why you guys are running out." When the student tried to explain that the esthetician students were on top of it, Ms. Jama ignored her and said the same thing and how they should be better at staying on top of the laundry. No new towels were bought. Judging by the other negative yelp reviews, you can tell that Ms. Jama DOES NOT take any accountability nor does she care since she just copy and pastes her same responses to most of the negative reviews. Secondly, the school's supplies and kits. Both cosmetology and esthetician students have complained about the kits either because of unusable/broken items or being outdated. Unusable old eyelash glue, broken hairdryer dryers, etc. There are multiple steamers by the restroom on the esthetician side that don't work. This school teaches about sanitation and contamination but yet has 2 broken trash cans - 1 in the spa room and 1 in the manicurist area (You have to lift the top to throw stuff inside). When instructors are told about either trash can, they're just told along the lines of "Oh.. I'll let Ms. Jama know" and nothing is ever done about it. Those have been there for over a year. The chairs in the lecture rooms on both the cosmo side and the esthetician side are very uncomfortable foldable chairs, the kind you use for parties. Your back and butt will ache so much at the end of the day on those chairs. A student had once complained about them to Ms. Jama herself and was told "Just bring a pillow from home." A school that also teaches about ergonomics by the way. The school takes pride in having classes only 3 days a week, but it's so hard to attend school when you are so completely bored out of your mind. Even harder when you're working a full time job to pay for the school. Theory days are the worst. You spend 8 hours doing book work and the lectures are just the instructor reading straight out of the book. There's no engagement what so ever. Students can finish 2+ chapters each theory day but just because you can do that doesn't mean the class will progress with you. So there's no point in doing that. On the other two days, you can work hands on but it still feels like a drag. A lot of students have complained about the lack of enthusiasm or engagement on school days. Many of the students who have graduated complained about how they wanted to leave and transfer out but stayed only because they already invested so much money into the school. There are many more things I could list but those are the main concerns and complaints past and present students had about the school. Enroll at your own risk. I highly suggest looking some place else to go to school.
