I recently retired in Norman, OK nearly three years…read moreago and American Armory was my fist gun shop in this town, my wife's first EVER(and had never physically held a firearm or ANY AMMO). We could not have made a more perfect stop anywhere. James accommodated myself and Lauren, my wife. Two and half hours later, they were still answering questions an/or assisting us(no rolling of the eyes nor faces of WTF?! LOL), and had a great positive vibe from beginning to end. For myself, one of THE BEST gun store experiences I've EVER had(been shooting since I was 5 y/o and I'm 52 y/o now). My wife was handled PERFECTLY. She had been sheltered(Pentecostal)her entire life(63 y/o)up until we married four(4)years ago. Not only that, she was the typical, possible and potential patron who were very afraid of ANY firearm. After yesterday, no longer afraid-just a healthy respect AND educated(THANK YOU Lauren, you nailed it!). The store is located in a "strip of stores"and NO air conditioning and a lot of fans. Not a terrible amount of firearm inventory, nor very spacious, but did have a bevy of information and old school shooting range(indoor). That being said, none of that deterred us from making an informed decision. In fact, I will be picking up a Rock Island "1911" Tactical II semi-auto and my wife's, a Ruger SR22(Model 3607)at the end of the month. At the end of our visit, they had disclosed they had owned the business for ten(10+)years. By all means, shop the local competitors, but we know you'll be back here. This shop is SUPERB and have their regulars(matter of fact, one set of came in TWICE while we were visiting)! They have a gunsmith, are very hospitable AND the price is right. #GodBlessTheUSA

But they purposely draw this out as if it is some big ordeal. Like oh my suppressor is here in your store actively and all I have to do is submit a form to the ATF? "I know you're in store right now. But let me make you an appointment for a month away to do the paperwork". You could literally do in 30 minutes right now. Not to mention literally everything in their store is extremely overpriced. If you want someone to waste your time and to charge you twice, what something's worth go here. The only thing they have going for them is the selection of firearms they have for sale. But they marked the prices so absurdly high no one's ever buying any of these guns. You can look at all their guns and then come back in four months and not a single one of them has sold. And then on top of that none of the employees seem like they actually wanna be there. My friend used a different gun store and had his suppressor at his house in less than a week. Yet I'm almost a month in and I haven't even started my freaking paperwork with them.

I wish I remember the gentleman who looked at the issue, and got it to go together for me. He was kind enough to explain what happened and how to prevent it in the future. I enjoy shooting there and will continue to do so. All the employees there are friendly and helpful. The range is nicer than their competition and the target system has digital yardage indicators on the switch box for extending and retrieving the targets.

I had called about the possibility of selling a gun, or trading it in. When the man heard what I had, he was very excited and wanted me to bring it in. In fact he said, "we would really like to see that thing come through our doors...we would have a really good offer..." now I had explained in detail what I had, and so he was not at all ignorant of what I would be bringing. I explained it was a long drive and I didn't want to waste the drive or the time for just a dumb offer. And he reaffirmed again that he couldn't give me a price over the phone, but that the offer for my piece would be very good and fair. I made the long trip from north of Edmond all the way to big boys guns. They looked at, seemed to love it, and then explained they would have to pass...wouldn't even make an offer. The guy then tried to figure out who talked to me when I explained my side, but still they made no offer. Can't say the guys were jerks or anything like that, but sadly a very disappointing business model.

I wish I could give no stars…read more First, I want to be very clear: I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life, and while I have experienced racism throughout my life, I have also experienced love, respect, and hospitality from many wonderful people of all backgrounds. My late grandfather was a white man, and he never treated me as anything less than HIS. That is why this experience hurt me so deeply. More than anything, I am disappointed and saddened. I cried on the ride home. My husband and I came into this business on Saturday and purchased two firearms totaling $435. Mike, informed me that my background check had not come back yet and that I would have to wait, even though we were initially told I would not have to. The following Monday, we called to check on the status because no one had called us to let us know whether the firearms were ready for pickup. We came by each day until Wednesday before 7 PM, only to find the store closed. We had called ahead because I do not get off work until 6 PM & were told they are a private company & can close whenever they feel like closing.   When we arrived to pick up the firearms, the owner, Mike, who I understand is a retired police officer, told us he had "bad news." He then accused my husband and me of attempting a "straw purchase" and suggested we were planning to do something illegal with the firearms. He also threatened that we could face serious federal time. I want to be very clear: I have never been in trouble in my life. My family has been a staple in Midwest City for over 50 years. My husband is from Miami and recently moved here because of me. Neither of us are felons, and we did not do anything illegal. The reason we were purchasing the firearms was for protection. I have Lupus and several other health issues, and there have been strange people knocking on our door while I was home alone. My husband did not want me to be at home underprotected. He is a gun enthusiast and an NRA member, and he was excited to take me to the range and teach me how to safely use my own firearms -- one for home protection and one to keep with me. We explained the situation, who we are, that we are not criminals but hardworking, God fearing people to Mike, and after everything, he said he still wanted to earn our business. I told him plainly that we would not be returning because of how poorly we had been treated. I understand that people of all races and backgrounds do wrong every day. However, that is not a valid reason to judge hardworking, law-abiding people based on assumptions, prejudice, or preconceived ideas. I noticed there are not many Black people in the reviews, and after this experience, I understand why there were none in the store. I also now understand why several of my family members, including my white brother-in-law, who is also a gun enthusiast, told me not to come here. Mike did refund our money by writing a check, but the damage from the experience and the mistreatment cannot be undone.  The feelings he left us with have no tangible or financial justification or rectification.   I will continue to pray for people like him, but I will also be honest about my experience. I will be sharing the truth with others, including people connected to my husband's gun safety and training class, as well as my online community.  We had planned to bring others in to make purchases & for my husband to teach them how to safely use them.   No customer should be treated this way, especially when they have done nothing wrong.
