I feel sorry for white people sometimes. Particularly when they're living in Ellenville and don't know much about good food. A proper restaurant should not have only one woman in it (who later called the son to help out). She shouldn't have to serve and "cook" and clean as well. "Cook" as in microwaving frozen ingredients. My salmon teriyaki was extremely dissappointing. It was clearly a 3/8" thick piece of fish that was previously frozen and overcooked. I looked over into someone's bowl of Udon and noticed very quickly the broth was a murky white. Overcooked. We gave her a fair tip as we don't want her business to fail - but this is one of those places Gordon Ramsey would definitely need to visit. read more

I've had the bulgogi and the spicy chicken from Sook House, and it was very delicious. The miso soup was tasty but has a different flavor from most miso soup I've had before.. All in all, I'm very happy that there is a local restaurant that serves such delicious Korean/Japanese food, and not to mention has very friendly staff. I can't wait to go back to try the bibimbap! Ate here last night for the first time. The food was very good and they had very big portions for a sushi restaurant! We ordered the charlie roll and it had like 16 pieces to it- it was huge and also very good. The miso soup was yummy as was the seaweed salad. The service was good, but there were a bit disorganized and they seemed slightly overwhelmed. There were 2 servers and a women who we thought was a customer at the bar who ended up serving us water. We had to ask for it quite a few times and we were only given 3 napkins for the whole table and had to ask for more of those too. I think it was just from there being 3 pretty large parties in the restaurant at the same time and two tables of 2-3, but hopefully they'll stay that busy and be able to keep it a bit more organized too! read more

I must be eating at a different place than the others below. The ONLY reason we go here is because we are a captive audience and they are the only sushi game in town. Small portions, high prices and their Miso soup is basically salty water, having absolutely NO seaweed in it, which to my understanding was a vital part of this otherwise boring soup. I asked them to make a substitute for me they simply said "no" and did not offer an an explanation. Its kind of pathetic that this establishment so obviously has their friends and workers leave positive feedback on this forum. I certainly know what it means to be a good business owner and what quality food tastes like, and this is NOT it. Perhaps they should refine their menu and either do Korean OR Japanese and perfect one or the other. Something needs to change. I will not be returning. read more

This little restaurant is a welcome surprise to Ellenville which is a town off of Rte 209 in the Catskills. My sister has been waiting to take me here for a while and we're just sitting down to eat. We ordered: crab meat puffs, gyoza fried veggie dumplings, agedashtofu (fried bean curd), Cali roll with masago, Phili roll, Rainbow roll and the Crab Tempura roll. They have a nice little menu which I hope as they become more popular, they will be able to expand on. My sister raves about the food here and I can't wait to dig in! Authentic Korean food in Ellenville! Sook House is a true gem in this area, nothing else comes close.

Let's start with the food. For appetizers we had what the waitress claimed were homemade gyoza, or vegetable dumplings. It was painfully obviously that they were store bought and prepackaged. They were overpriced, stale, deep-fried, and stupidly greasy. A no-go for us. I also didn't appreciate being lied to about the origins of my food. My salmon teriyaki was just that--previously frozen salmon slammed onto a grill and slathered in an overly sweet and unappetizing black and tarry sauce. A handful of under cooked pieces of vegetable (a pitiful, less than a handful large serving of carrots and exactly two pieces of broccoli) were also included with the salmon. There was a side of overcooked rice, a house salad with a sweet ginger dressing, and a small bowl of grainy miso soup. My partner had several orders of sushi including: The spicy tuna roll, the crab tempura roll (Which the waitress claimed was the restaurants most popular dish), and the rainbow roll. The spicy tuna roll was slathered in the restaurant's disgusting and extremely heavy "House Sauce" which we later found out was literally a combination of mayonnaise and sriracha sauce (Which is an unfortunately popular and trendy sauce to use in Americanized sushi establishments). The crab tempura roll was a gigantic deep fried roll slathered in an overly sweet teriyaki sauce and that same disgusting House Sauce. It was greasy and unappetizing and nowhere near worth the $12 price tag. The dragon roll was fair. The fish was fresh but the flavor was overall plain and disappointing. The presentation was mediocre and rushed, which seems incredibly ironic given that there only two other tables in at the restaurant at the time. We ordered alcohol. An order of sake to share between the two of us and a glass of pinot grigio for myself. The wine was boxed (We saw it as the waitress carted it out of the fridge in the back) and the "hot sake" was warmed using a microwave. I didn't mind the microwave but I feared, throughout the night, what else they might have used it for in their "cooking". The waitress serving us seemed fun and nice enough, though she looked tired and overworked. Understandable, given that she was the only one on staff on a Saturday night with just a single chef in the backroom. It was very confusing to have what we assume was the manager bearing her presence over us while we ate, checking in on our table literally six seconds after the waitress came to ask us how we were doing on multiple occasions. The restaurant's aura was so mixed. The lighting didn't match the decor and the decor didn't suit the feel of a "Japanese and Korean restaurant". The walls were lined with a tacky brick outline wallpaper and the lighting was extremely poor. Maybe they thought the poor lighting would help to conceal the horrifying food and mediocre service. To summarize: The service wasn't horrible but it wasn't exactly great, either. I was extremely disappointing by the food and thought that I paid too much for too little. A very disappointing Saturday night. I hate to leave small businesses poor reviews, but this one seriously needs an overhaul. read more

Alongside Gaby's and Aroma Thyme, Sook House is about as good as food gets in Ellenville. This would be a three and a half star review in the city due to some quirks, but in Ellenville, you have to overlook a few odd things. Quirks: -Weird schedule. Closes at 9 PM most nights and there is a break between the end of lunch and the beginning of dinner. CHECK THE SCHEDULE. -Only one lady (probably the owner?) running the entire restaurant. She served our group of seven ok. She always look a little frazzled and overworked, but she is extremely nice and takes good care of her customers. The service: (As discussed above) Excellent. The food: I like the Chicken Teriyaki and the Tempura Crab Roll when I am feeling adventurous. Chicken Teriyaki: B+ Comes with salad w/ ginger dressing, rice, and miso soup. All were typical of what one would find at a fairly good NYC sushi house. So was the Chicken Teriyaki. Sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce, comparable with Aoki in Manhattan. Chicken was lightly cooked with no browning. (Otherwise I would have given it an A) Tempura Crab Roll: A- Huge roll, as filling as the Chicken Teriyaki, rolled up with crab, avocado, and cream cheese. IMPORTANT: The CRAB ROLL, not the crab, is tempura fried. (Naturally, other sushi rolls are served cold and are fairly good from what I hear) Atmosphere: Fairly quiet, soft lighting, liquor license. There may be one or two other populated tables in the restaurant. Bottom line: The lady running the restaurant is perhaps the hardest working person in Ellenville. Somewhat uncharacteristic for the area, she understands customer service and keeps a schedule. Not to mention the fact that she can run a restaurant fairly well as one person. It's worth a try and stands a decent chance of satisfying the NYC crowd. read more

Now just a little background (because I really hate giving reviews less than three stars)...I'm Asian, grew up in southern California, and lived on both coasts. My Korean food experiences include situations where, if the line was too long at one place, you'd walk across the street/parking lot to the next place. In other words: I've had a lot of Korean food in a lot of different situations. So you're in Ellenville, and want Korean food... Had the bulgogi lunch. Rice was undercooked, and there were none of the side dishes I've come to expect from Korean restaurants, not even kim chee. Meat was okay, and there was enough. I suppose this is good food for the area, and fine for the tourist crowd looking for something that isn't burgers and fries. read more

We spend summers in the area and have been eating at Sook'sHouse for years. The food brought us here and keeps us coming back. Love the Charlie Roll, the Tempura Crab Roll are some favorites. I was surprised at how good this place was. It doesn't look like much from the outside and Ellenville is not the place I would normally think of going for good Asian cuisine, but both myself and my dinner companion were very happy with the Udon soup, seaweed salad, dumplings,and fried crab roll. Other people mentioned only one woman in the place, but there was a waitress on my visit and an older woman in the kitchen. It might have been a problem if the place was busy, but we were there at 5pm on a Friday and only one other couple was in the place. Yes, the hours are strange, so check ahead. My only real complaint is the lighting. It was too dark. The windows are covered over and there is not much in the way of lighting within, it was even hard to see the menu, but I will certainly go back. read more

Sook House is simply amazing: the owner is incredibly nice, her waiting staff is excellent, and the food is absolutely fantastic. I have no idea what Mr. Albert was thinking when he reviewed this restaurant: his one star rating and poor review do NOT accurately reflect the quality of the food or the owner of this fine establishment. As a regular customer at the Sook House, I can guarantee you that the word "cook" is NOT synonymous with Mr. Albert's ludicrous and utterly deluded definition of the word. The fact of the matter is, this place is as good as it gets! I wrote a review last year but have no clue where it went but it would be an injustice to not review this wonderful little place in Ellenville. The sushi is excellent, limited menu but what is there is excellent. You may walk in on one of those times that she's working alone so the wait may be a bit longer but hey....you're in the country, going out to eat so why the hurry. Even I'd she's alone don't feel bad about calling her over to your table, she really doesn't mind. I'm a regular patron, I'm extremely selective but her customer service and friendliness, great sushi, she won me over...not an easy task!!!! read more

I second what Jessica G. wrote. Tonight was my first time, and I am very pleasantly surprised. We had the Dragon Roll, the Rainbow Roll, Gyoza, and Miso soup. All were wonderful. The sushi is the freshest I have had anywhere, and the portions are larger than I have seen anywhere. The bashing reviews here do not know what they are talking about. Yes, it is very small, but I don't care. The walls do look cheap with their covering, but I don't care about that either. I went there to eat sushi, and I had a great meal. I also want to add that while I saw the alleged owner mentioned in other reviews, she was working in the back. There were also two male chefs and a very friendly waitress, making a total of four workers. While we were there, we saw two other tables with customers and several take-out customers. I will definitely be back whenever I have to make a trip to Ellenville. read more
