The first time I went to Cellarmaker I was post-ride -- the particular kind of hungry and…read moredehydrated that makes any beer taste like the best beer you've ever had, which is why I don't fully trust that first impression. But the West Coast IPA was good, genuinely good, and the pizzas coming out of the kitchen to the tables around me looked like pizzas made by people who cared about pizza, and the outdoor area was the kind of setup that welcomes bikes and dogs without making a production of it. I made a mental note: come back sometime for food. "Sometime" turned out to be yesterday, which is how it always works, the places you mean to return to in a week take three months, and the ones you expect to take three months surprise you on a random afternoon when you're starving and nearby and out of excuses. We'd taken the dogs on a long hike through Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, which if you haven't done it is one of those East Bay hikes that makes you briefly forget you live in an urban area -- redwoods and eucalyptus and creek crossings and the kind of quiet that resets whatever the week did to you. By the end of it we were the specific kind of famished where menu deliberation is impossible and you just point at things and hope. We sat outside and pointed at things and everything we pointed at was excellent. The baked sweet potato--a Japanese sweet potato under miso butter, chili crème fraîche, bacon bits, crispy onions, scallions, and pea tendrils--is the kind of dish that sounds like it was assembled by a committee of trendy adjectives but actually works as a coherent thing you want to eat. The miso butter does the heavy lifting, that sweet-savory bridge that makes Japanese sweet potatoes sing, and the chili crème fraîche keeps it from tipping into cloying territory. Fifteen dollars for a side dish at a brewery is a number that would normally make me flinch, but the portion was generous and the execution was real. The summer squash tostadas--roasted zucchini, cherry tomatoes, avocado, pickled red onion, salsa macha, queso fresco, cilantro--were bright and crunchy and exactly the kind of thing you want after four hours in the woods. The salsa macha brought a nutty, smoky heat that elevated what could have been a forgettable veggie tostada into something I'd actually order again on purpose. And then there were the pickled vegetables. Cauliflower, fennel, zucchini, carrots. Seven dollars. Who pickles zucchini? Cellarmaker pickles zucchini, and it's delicious, and I'm annoyed that I now have to rethink my entire understanding of what belongs in a pickle jar. I had the Diamonds & Gasoline, a West Coast IPA with Nelson Sauvin and Cascade Cryo hops. The menu copy promises white wine and gooseberry and diesel-y grapefruit funk. What I'd tell you is that it's dank. Good dank. The kind of resinous, piney, vaguely illicit West Coast IPA that California does better than anywhere and that Northern California in particular has turned into a regional art form. I drank it and thought about the fact that I've started using the word "dank" to describe beer unironically and that I voluntarily hiked through redwoods on a Sunday afternoon and that I'm sitting outside a brewery in Berkeley with two dogs at my feet eating a Japanese sweet potato with miso butter on it. I am becoming a Northern Californian. This is happening. I lament nothing. The pizza will have to wait for the third visit. Wednesday, maybe -- they do a $12 slice-and-beer special that sounds like exactly the kind of deal that accelerates the conversion.

The pizza smells from the kitchen were delicious. There were tables inside and outside to sit. Server was very friendly and willing to give samples. Don't forget about the arcade games! Bring your change or don't, they have a quarter machine. **protip: they have their own parking lot! Definitely recommend.

I came on a Thursday afternoon wanting to try the starburst beer. Usually I would order whatever has the highest in alcohol percent but I had seen post about the starburst, it looks so colorful so very inviting I had to try. Didn't get a buzz much but it's probably because after I finished my beer I took a walk to a donut spot I wanted to try that was a few blocks away. A lot of small groups, solo guests like myself and couples plus kids were here. They do sell food but I wasn't really up for trying anything that day. It was hot the day I came and they had mist blowing everywhere so instead of feeling like hot heat it was like a warm moist feeling at the tables. There were higher table seating but I opt for the shared lower tables. I had tried to come by here during a Sunday evening but parking was really hard to find that we didn't choose to look for any parking since there wasn't any close by. I found a space to park just across the street from them. There was a homeless person I had seen that was trying to talk to me but I was walking around where other people were walking so I took it like he was talking to them and just ignored him. I've noticed most homeless people talk to themselves so probably that was the case but hopefully next time I come, he won't be there. There are bathrooms in the back and I saw an entrance from there too. I came in where the line is to order. I glanced at the other beer options but nothing spoke to me like the starburst one. The lady that poured my drink says the foam on top is usually high and pointy but it was kinda flat because of the heat so I'll be trying it again when it gets a bit cooler.

You enter without truly knowing where to go or what to do, so be observant as there may be an actual line to order drinks and food, just don't cut someone off. Ordering was easy. Same window for beer and food. If you order food you're given a number that people deliver food. Came here for happy hour. I got myself a pretzel with add-on cheese, a pulled pork (seasonal) Belgie with fries, and I sampled other food that my friends ordered. Firstly, the 1L beer is worth it. Not happy hour prices., but well worth the volume. It definitely transported me back to my visit to Munich and the beer halls. Oh, I do miss the drunken singing of the Germans lol Secondly, the food was just okay. Pretzels were thankfully cheaper since it was happy hour but i paid $1 for the add-on cheese. The mustard combo sauce was great. I wish the pretzel was a bit bigger. I appreciated the warmth and the salt ratio; not overpowering. The Belgie (waffle sandwich) was also on happy hour. The texture of the waffle was great. Crisp exterior, soft interior. I ordered the seasonal pulled pork which was great in texture and decently portioned. It is a thick boy, so biting into it was a bit of a challenge. Ended up deconstructing the sandwich and used utensils. Sauce maybe would've been better on the side. Fries always win. No complaints though I wish I ordered the garlic fries... the smell was good. One thing I didn't get to try was their famous, Starbust drink which is a mix of beer, cider and some frosty, maybe. The color was intriguing and everyone seemed to order it around me. The misters were on, which was a blessing and a curse. Definitely helped cool me down, but also became a nuisance as the table and all my belongings got wet. Excited for their new location in Old Sac. Maybe a revised review in the future. Stay tuned.

Where else can you find an organized event with all you can drink beer and all you can snack food. It almost seemed like a race against time with the 3 hour window, but my friends and I were prepared. With empty stomachs and a determination like no other, we faced the hundreds of breweries with our teeny weeny cups and snatched as many small bites we possibly could. Some of the highlights that I give my royal approval: - the spot in the back with the giant beer: the red blend was awesome - chimay....we found you! but please...the small steins are silly as is, don't be cheap and give us more than just half of it. - never going to waste my time with the pear ciders - corndogs....it was like the holy grail - aidell's is bomb - hanoi beer girls....beer probably sucked, but you girls were great at pooring. - Pizza Orgasmica, thank you for replenishing yourselves. it wouldn't be the same without the pizza and beer combo! and so ...next year, i'm going to have to come back fosho!

After visiting a couple of art galleries in San Francisco on Saturday, January 11, 2025, I…read moreconvinced DJ that we should dine out in the city since we were already out. Remembering that he had been wanting to check out 21st Amendment for some years now, I suggested that we go here. DJ was immediately sold. After calling two to three times to no avail, we temporarily parked nearby, so that DJ could walk in to check if they were still open and serving dinner. Thankfully, they were open, but they didn't hear the phone ring. We reparked, then arrived shortly before 7:30 PM and were seated immediately. I had been at 21st Amendment before for a very enjoyable lunch with some colleagues back in November, 2019 and the place looked exactly how I remembered it. Venue: 4 stars. With concrete floors and walls with wooden tables and chairs & benches, the restaurant has a rustic and industrial air. Upon entry, patrons are greeted by the bar with seating and its attendants. They have an open kitchen from where the cooks can nod greetings to you. The entire space, including the women's restroom is kept clean & tidy. DJ's only complaint was that he did not enjoy some of the techno music that would play in between the salsa and reggaeton songs both of which I was totally digging. Food: 3 stars. In addition to the TALL HAT that DJ ordered and fully enjoyed, below-listed are the food items that we had. Soup of the Day, Gumbo ($7 cup) - I was given a couple of complimentary slices of toasted bread to accompany my New Orleans stew which were nice to dip in the broth and eat. I'm not quite sure what kind of meat was used, but there was no sausage. 21st Amendment's version of gumbo is more like a soup rather than a stew as the broth was not as thick as usual. The flavour was still good, but I did wish that there was okra. When I was at the bottom of the cup and asked how I liked the gumbo, I commented that I enjoyed it, but was surprised that it was completely absent of rice. Our server, Luis, went back to the kitchen to inquire, returned, informing me that the kitchen admitted to forgetting it, so with a new cup including rice in hand, he served the second serving to me and comped the cup from our bill. Wow, I was very impressed by how the matter was handled. Veggie Burger ($16) with Garlic Fries ($2) - DJ said that the sriracha flavour of the aioli was light/faint. He would have preferred a little more punch of spice from the condiment. The garlic fries were not bad. Baja Fish Tacos with mixed greens ($19) - The two tacos were very generous in portions and the fish were perfectly fried golden. I found the cod to be fishy in taste, so I gave my second taco to DJ. He did not notice any fishy flavour which is very interesting because he is a vegetarian and I expected him to notice it much more than I did. Weird. Meat Lover's PIZZA ($20) - We ordered two of these twelve inch pies for to-go for the boys. Both said that they were good. Service: 5 stars. As I mentioned before, Luis was our waiter and he delivered stellar service. As a former server, myself, I noticed immediately the excellent care we were given by him. The entire night, I kept commenting to DJ on every moment that Luis demonstrated his top-notch customer service. We will definitely need to come back...when Luis is working!

I wish the atmosphere had been a bit more friendly and chatty, especially since it wasn't very busy.
