Reno and northern Nevada have such a rich history and not all of it involves gambling, over-eating at buffets and casinos. In fact, just as I have done in Las Vegas, I sought out a quality eco-tour and got one here with Sonny Boys Tours. Having just a few hours to kill before my flight home, I was lucky to acquire Patrick and Tina for a quickie wild horse tour. It was just me and I had to pay the minimum price for 2 but it was well worth it. I was amazed that right behind a bunch of newly constructed homes on the outskirts of town, there roamed these magnificent creatures. These Mustangs have such a history about them and actually may be the last REAL wild thing left here about the Old West. They are descended from several horses brought over by traders and trappers who escaped and began breeding. Before too long, there were too many and they were grazing on land that the cattle barons wanted for their own herds. The wild Mustangs suffered greatly from mistreatment at the hands of our settlers and came close to extinction. But they have rallied and now are protected in this part of the high desert of Nevada. The family units the horses stay in together are similar to our own familial arrangements. There are parents, siblings and babies who all stay together. Some of the horses looked like they could use some TLC but the stallions were majestic and gorgeous! They nibble on grasses in the valleys that are a fire danger and extremely flammable so the Mustangs are doing a good deed here. I also saw several quail running around, plenty of butterflies and other wild birds I was not sure of their identity. This is a wonderful tour that I would highly recommend. Tina has educated me now on the plight of these wild horses, which still need our support and continued protection. She was singing to the choir here about helping them, as I have a special place in my heart for helping animals in need. I would like to encourage parents to bring their children with them on the tours to inculcate in their progeny a love and respect for our equine friends. Your heart will rise up out of your chest when you closely behold these magnificent, noble, TRULY WILD creatures of the great American West. read more

It doesn't get much better than this company. If you want to see wild horses, then you must do this while in the Reno area. The tour company is run by a husband and wife team. Both are extremely pleasant and passionate at what they do. They pick you up at your hotel promptly and in 20 minutes, your are seeing the wild horses. I'm an amateur photographer and I managed to take over 2,300 photos on the 3 hour tour. This was our second time using them. Every time we are in the Reno area, we plan to take a tour. Book them. We've looked for wild horses in Nevada on our own for years, without success. Tina had us gazing at two of them not a hundred feet away within a few minutes of driving into the Washoe lake area. She's friendly, knowledgeable, and altogether a terrific guide. Plus she's actively involve in preserving the wild horses in Nevada, which is well worth supporting. In three hours and several location we saw dozens of horses, including a new foal. An added bonus was seeing a new and beautiful part of Nevada just a few miles from not-so-beautiful Reno. We highly recommend this tour. Another note: one of us is way less mobile than the other, but everything was quite visible from the car for the passenger who couldn't walk out to the viewing platform at the southern end of the lake. read more

Great time! We did the four hour tour and saw a ton of horses. Patrick was our guide. He is very knowledge about the area and his passion for the horses became evident very quickly. He was out of the car and taking photos alongside us. Patrick did an excellent job giving us the best viewing angles and getting us close to the horses while not intruding upon them and still giving them their space. I didn't know what to expect going into the tour, but was blown away. I had the misconception that we would be off the beaten path and deep in the Virginia Range. Although we ventured off the paved road a few times, the horses were extremely close to the roads and we didn't have to go far to see them. If you do this, you'll see your first few within a few minutes of the tour starting. This was an excellent time and I definitely recommend it to others! FANTASTIC TOUR! I will admit that we were afraid before we started the tour that we would spend this money and maybe not see any horses or only a few. We saw over a hundred wild horses! It was an incredible experience to see the horses in the wild and watch their interactions. Patrick is very knowledgeable not only on where to find the horses but he will give you information about the different horse families as well. Patrick also educated us (we were limited in our horse knowledge) on what the horse interactions represented. He is very friendly and doesn't mind answering all your questions. When you are with a group of horses he allows you all the time you want for pictures and watching. One group of horses came up to within 20 feet of us. Our last spot that we stopped at was what Patrick called "the watering hole". I don't know how many horses were there, but it must have been at least 70 or more. We got to watch young horses running and playing together, horses rolling in the water, horses challenging each other and a young horse nursing. Our son went to the tour thinking it was not going to be that much fun but left the tour amazed and so happy he went. It is a family business. I would advise that you plan ahead and book the tour earlier rather than later. We were a little concerned because we booked the afternoon tour just that morning. We were lucky that they had the tour available for us but there wasn't an address for us to know where to go for the tour. There was a phone number but we just got a voicemail. If that happens to you - don't worry. They called us back about an hour later and sent us instructions. We met at a retail store in Reno next to a "Park and Ride". We parked our car in the Park and Ride and got into Patrick's 7 passenger SUV that could handle the off road terrain. It was so much better than we imagined it could be. I highly recommend that you go on this tour. I have included a couple of photos from my iPhone but I only took a couple of pictures. My husband had a nice camera with a zoom lens. I really learned a lot about the wild mustangs from Tina. It was a wonderful experience getting to see the various bands and learning all about the interactions of the animals. My daughter had booked the tours and we certainly enjoyed them. A surprise was the water sources in the Reno/ Sparks area. Who knew? Also shocking was the rapid growth of the area with housing everywhere. The growth is also driving out the Mustangs as they can not compete with the human population. Tina was fantastic!! We saw 5-6 different bands of wild horses! She is extremely knowledgeable and cares deeply for these animals. If you want a tour guide who cares for the horses, and gets you as close as possible then Tina is your best bet! She knows the terrain, and back roads. AWESOME EXPERIENCE !!! My husband and I went on this tour on Tuesday morning and had an amazing tour. We did tour #3 and saw so many mustangs that we couldn't believe it. Patrick was our guide and we learned so much about the history and life of these mustangs. We saw many young foals and watching all the interaction of these beautiful wild horses was magical. Patrick drove off road so we could get really close and I got the most wonderful pictures. He was very patient and allowed us all the time we wanted to watch and take pictures. He was very informative and answered all of our questions. We must have seen close to 200 mustangs maybe more.... we couldn't have been more pleased and happy with this tour. Another photographer and I went on a late afternoon tour with Patrick. Patrick cares about wild mustangs, and has vast knowledge about their history and current issues. I wanted to photograph "Paints," and he delivered. I also joked that I wanted to have a rainbow in the background and he delivered again. He was also good at pointing out property restrictions in the locations we visited so we wouldn't inadvertently trespass if we returned at another time. I booked the four hour tour and ended up going by myself with Patrick as my tour guide. This was a great way to spend the morning. We visited several different places and I too some amazing photos with my "good" camera (photos here are from my cell phone). We saw some really good horse interaction and Patrick was fabulous about helping me get a great view. He and Tina have produced a very well done cd with information about the history of the horse and an introduction to horse behavior. Patrick was knowledgeable about conversation efforts and issues and provided some very interesting insights. When I asked for suggestions on how to spend the rest of my day-he recommended a drive to Pyramid Lake and the Museum there. He was absolutely right!! It was a great way to cap off my visit to Reno. I booked a tour on line (real easy) after deciding on which tour (not so easy). We got picked up on time agreed and place ... the vehicle was comfortable and the day went great. We did Tour #2 ....
