Despite the crowd, we received our order fairly quickly, I think because we just ordered desserts, not meals. Right after we got our order, a young girl, who appeared to be with her elderly grandparents, asked the manager (I believe) about their order. They had been waiting since before we arrived, and we got our order before they did. It was a legit question. But the manager got angry and threatened to call the cops. The manager said the school kids were a priority and she would just call her brother, who is a cop, if they had a problem with it. I have no idea what could have warranted that response from the manager. There was no yelling or any sort of aggression, just a question. I was horrified. My family and I left...we just wanted a treat, not drama. I don't know what happened afterwards, but no one deserves that kind of treatment.

My only complaint I could give would be the beans and rice. The beans had an off taste to them.(maybe add bacon fat?) The rice seemed a little overcooked, but the flavor was still there. A little salsa on them and BAM! They were right back in the game! The Enchilada, taco, and tostada were excellent. The chili relleno was delicious! I got mine with cheese, and omg it was loaded!!! Lastly.. the star for me was the tamale.. I haven't had one better than El Rey Sol since Delia's in South Texas. I could smash a dozen of them by myself! The waffle fries are an upcharge and are only available in a medium size, not large. I'll take waffle fries over regular fries any day of the week, even for a small upcharge. The chicken wasn't bad. It was charred nicely. The bacon was a little limp, but overall, it did the job. I enjoyed the waffle fries the best. They were fresh. They had not been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time which is always a risk at a fast food joint. For what it is, Carl's Jr. makes for a decent late night selection when you're on the road.

Quite simply, this place uses red sauce (vs. chili gravy) for enchiladas. It also offers stacked enchiladas with an egg placed on top, which is true New Mexican. Beyond that, the menu is quite varied. I'll start with my cheese enchiladas with red sauce. The sauce was spicy as hell, which was wonderful. The enchiladas themselves were a disappointment because they used two corn tortillas to roll them with the smallest pinch of cheese I've experienced in a while. -- I'm not sure about my dad's chile relleno and beef enchilada with green sauce, but he really enjoyed both. The rice and beans were pretty much par for the course. Not bad but nothing special. The salsa here is phenomenal. There's just enough onion and cilantro to make it memorable. It's served cold, which is a must for me, and it has some serious bite. Service here is really friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is old school: cheap paneling and trite "Mexican" decor.
