The people there are wonderful. My parents no longer live in the area but they swear by this place. If you enjoy a good bacalao (Spanish for Cod Fish) then this is the place to visit. This is a Portuguese shop so you will find just about any goods you may be looking for from Portugal. I am not Portuguese but I enjoy shopping at places which can provide things which are delicious and different. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mazeman Surf & Turf, and there were plenty of other items on the menu that piqued my interest that I'll have to save for another visit. Their website only highlights their dinner menu, but they also offer lunch and brunch as well. Staying under the radar seems to be Hachiroku's M.O., but it would be nice to have more visibility into their current offerings across all their concepts. I wasn't in "the loop" of Hachiroku's expansion plans, but apparently they just opened another location at 20 George St. I'm not sure if that's the reason for the quiet Sunday night, but there was only one person running the front of the house, which was enough to maintain a smooth service. I would love to see this place bustling to the point where they require a full staff to run it, but as long as the doors stay open, they can keep doing whatever they're doing.

Variety is the same if not slightly (im saying this loosely) different from asian markets you can find in east hartford, or g-mart in milford. The store is small. Prices are high because tariffs and exorbitant shipping. There are too many asian markets in the tri-state area for this crap. I got a few buns, some candy and other snacks for the weird al show. I asked how long was the store open and the cashier was standoffish but answered me. She just could NOT WAIT for me to leave.. I'd rather pay the high shipping and tariffs than be judged and treated poorly in person for my foreign snacks hobby.

Unlike your average Mexican take on fried pig cubes, which get cut willy-nilly and tossed around indifferently, these are made with care from cuts of much higher quality. These are freshly fried, and perfectly fried golden, with none of that chewiness that comes from collagen just sitting around after being fried. You've got your fish sauce and your pickle-vinegar brine to add brightness to all that fatty goodness, and a liver sauce that tastes like apple sauce to bring you a sweet note. The longanisa with eggs is nice, but go for that lechon. Especially if you're an American who just stumbled into a Filipino grocery store in the boonies of Connecticut and don't know what you're doing. If you've never had fried pig cubes before, you may stride back into the parking lot a changed man.
