There was a group of us so we went family style on the appetizers. The mussels were delicious. The calamari was also very good, it was great to eat some calamari that wasn't fried for once. But call me biased, because I love crab cakes, but these ones were absolutely delicious! I ordered the Fettuccine with Pan Seared Shrimp. This was more so because my brother ordered the Shrimp and Scallop Brochettes, and I wanted to see as many entrees. But I definitely see myself going back to try so many entrees that look absolutely divine. My entree was good. I don't know much about Caribbean food, but didn't really picture it with the paremsan cheese and some melted cheese, but then again I did order fettuccine. I have to say that the mixture of the vegetables and sauce made it absolutely delicious! Unfortunately I couldn't finish it because I dabbled in so many of the appetizers. read more

The service was great -- our waitress was really nice and helpful with her suggestions of what was best on the menu. Loved the bread! Fresh and warm - yum. And my salmon was delicious - the sauce was perfect. I equally loved the rice and veggies, although they were far from healthy! Clearly cooked in butter or oil. Our only disappointment were the plantains -- maybe it was us, but they just didn't hit the spot. I'd love to come back for lunch sometime as their salad and sandwiches sound fantastic! Be prepared though, I saved half my entree for lunch the next day and still walked out over stuffed! read more

Just ate here for the first time this past weekend with friends who've been coming here for quite a while. Food is a Cajun/Caribbean mix and is excellent. My understanding is that they also just recently got a liquor license which is also a big plus. In terms of the Green Street connection, this was a big selling point for me. I loved the food at Green Street and knowing that the same Chef has popped up with his own establishment was great news to me. As for the atmosphere, is a really friendly relaxed view. Not pretentious in the least. The wait staff is incredibly friendly and does a great job of explaining the various items on the menu, just in case you are not familiar with Caribbean cuisine. Additionally, if you have really small kids, its definitely friendly and accommodating towards them (our friends have a 15 month old) and it was definitely a welcoming environment for her as well as all of us "adults". While Something Savory, is not necessarily on the beaten path, its well worth a trip out to Arlington. My guess is that after eating here once, you'll return...I know I will. read more

I've eaten at Something Savory many, many times and highly recommend it to everyone who asks. As other reviewers have noted, yes, the place is small so plan accordingly! I'm not sure if some of the folks who had bad experiences with the service just hit the place on an off-day, but I've always had good experiences with how the folks here took care of me. That said, here's a list of some of my favorites from this establishment: The homemade ginger beer is really good, but come on, treat yourself: order a pitcher of the sangria. It's the closest thing you can get to being on the beach without having to travel! The crab cakes are amazing. While they're an appetizer, they're really filling and could pass as an entree if you supplemented them with a salad. The fish chowder is awe-inspiring...rich and thick, perfectly spiced and hearty. Sandwich-wise you simply can't beat the Cuban. It's huge, complex and made perfectly every time. I've had the pork cutlets, the mango salmon and several of their main courses and they've all been extremely good, but hands down their jambalaya is their best dish. It's the best jam I've had outside of New Orleans, which is the highest compliment I can give a dish like that. I'm pretty sure I've tried everything on the dessert menu, but at the heart of it all it comes down to the key lime pie. This isn't Mrs. Smith's, people. Something Savory did it again! They were able to satisfy my belly. This time I came for lunch and let me tell you how amazing the prices are! My friend, Amanda R., got the cuban sandwich (which came with chips)- $8.95. I got the Chicken Curry entree (w. sauteed cabbage and veggie/blackbean rice) $7.95. 1/2 and 1/2 Lemonade/Iced Tea for the each of us - $??. Maine Crab Cakes $9.95 for 2! And while we were full from all that and a doggie bag for each of us; because I had a restaurant.com certificate for $25 with a minimum of $35, we still haven't reached out minimum and so we ordered one of their amazing bread puddings and a cup of coffee - still totaling just $38 and change before our certificate. Talk about a reasonable lunch deal!!! So with the restaurant.com g/c, we both had an exceptional large lunch (and dinner) for less than $10 each including our tip. Our server was amazingly awesome, I'm not sure what her name was, but she was just the sweetest thing and was able to handle the late lunch rush with families and all on a Saturday afternoon with no problems. * Bumped to 4.5 stars, but rounding to 5 cause I can! I was looking forward to eating here. My friend is strict vegetarian and the waiter was really nice and accommodating. I ordered the pre fixe menu which seemed like a great deal for $20. The jerk chicken thighs were moist and tasted authentic but didn't have sauce to accompany it. The tamarind pork chops were hard as a deck of cards, but the potatoes were light and fluffy. They were about to close by dessert time and were encouraging me to take it to go. I politely just told them that I didn't have a sweet tooth and asked if they could take a couple of bucks off the check. They were cool with that. Really small, so make a reservation! Just as other reviewers said, as the place filled up.....musical tables and chairs began....While eating, since I expected this from reading reviews, the moving of the tables and chairs didn't really bother me...instead I started plotting where they could move the next table or if these people are ready to pay their bill, they could sit there..... The decor was cute and I must say the food was really tasty! The cod and conch fritters tasted much better than they looked.....the mahi mahi and talapia dishes were so good and the portions were just right.....The salads and dishes that the other patrons were getting looked good too....I just wanted to walk over and try a fork full...Does any one else feel that way sometimes? We were too full for dessert ...BUT I will make sure to save room next time!!! read more

Totally soul food-a-licious, flavorful and yummy. The menu isn't very large but there is something for everyone. It has a latin flair and you can get platanos and yucca as appetizers. Sweet! I agree with other folks that it is a bit pricey but not too exorbitant. Check out www.restaurant.com to buy a $25 gift certificate for $10 (minimum food order of $45) or a $50 gift certificate for $20 (minimum food order of $100) to help off-set the cost. We got a last minute table here on Valentine's day. The place was really busy right around 6 pm and cleared out by around 8 pm. The crowd was mostly couples and middle aged folks without kids. The space is a bit tight to bring children although I'm sure they would accommodate you (don't know if they have high chairs, didn't see any). I would describe the service this restaurant provides as simple. They don't wine and dine you here. You get your food quickly and with a smile. The only downside is the place is small and so if you sit by the door you might be cold. They should put one of those fabric things around the door when you walk in but the space issue must be what's stopping them. so bring a sweater but the food makes up for it, for sure. And they seemed to turn the heat up too which helped so at least they are trying to accommodate! I'm going to try it for take-out soon. They have big portions so I bet you could get 3 dishes to serve 4 people and have a nice dinner party. read more

This place is great and deserves far more patronage than I think it's getting so far. It's hard to find really well done Caribbean (and New Orleans) food in the Boston area, but Something Savory has it's A-game on display even on slow nights. Try the Jambalaya anytime and you'll see what I mean. It's run in a small brightly-feathered room, with a nice straightforward menu and a beer and wine license. Very friendly and earnest staff. Easy on the wallet too. From the Harvard or Porter Square T stops take the 77 bus to Arlington Heights (I think it's one of the last couple of stops), if you don't have a car, and check it out yourself. read more

Not what you think of when you think Caribbean. Yes, there is Jerk Pork, but this is no street stand. The chef is from the old version of Green Street Grill, and he has opened up this small, bare bones storefront where the flavors are complex and exciting. They are fond of caramelized onions, and of sweet potato sauces. I have particularly liked the pasta dishes, esp the Spinach Ravioli, which has a wild mushroom and white wine sauce, and the jambalaya was great. Some of the food is spicy, but much not. Portions are huge (don't try to eat a side salad and a main dish). I would definitely be interested in using their catering service. Two things to beware: for some reason they close bizarrely early on weekdays, 8 pm, and only 9 on weekends. it is very frustrating to go all the way to the end of the earth in Arlington, and have them turn you away at 8:02. And watch out: they serve the food often in large deep bowls that hold heat like anything. read more

With a chef who used to work for the former Green Street Grill how can you possibly go wrong? You can't. I used to live a few doors down from this little place and loved stopping in to try new things. Very friendly, very yummy, a tad pricey but worth it. Anyone who offers fresh mango in any dish will win me over. Their salad with mango was awesome! I was also a huge fan of the Caribbean Roti (chicken, curry, rice, potatoes...yumm!). They do a lot of catering, so the sit down area was small, but really added to the family dining style. The wait staff was wonderful...so attentive and friendly. We stopped in for lunch and had the soup/sandwich combos. The soups were great (I had a beef and vegetable), but would have been better served with side of bread. Sandwiches were "ok" but nothing outstanding considering all the hype I've read. The decor is cute and service friendly. Like many i drove by this restaurant for some time before I stopped in; I must say that I wish I had stopped sooner. After several visits I can report that the food is tasty and the check reasonable. No it isn't the Oak Room, the decor could be describded as pizza place chic. A great spot to go for a meal when you just don't feel like dragging out the pots and pans. read more

I don't think Something Savory has a storefront restaurant anymore, but their catering business is still very active and does a wonderful job. Jodi and her crew catered a memorial gathering for my husband a week ago, with stationary and passed hors d'oeuvres, pastries, and various drinks, for about 100 people. She can be a little slow getting back to you in the beginning (but they're busy, and she'd given me cellphone and email contact info so I could have pushed it) but I had confidence in her and it was fine in time for the event. She was great working with me over the menu (the website has a fantastic list of possibilities) and making sure it was appropriate for the season and reminding me about gluten-free and vegetarian options, For drinks, we included wine and beer and when I suggested a bottled sangria, they offered to make it themselves for cheaper (and better!). Everything was delicious. Everything was well presented. It was a wonderful gathering and I would use Something Savory again for anything. read more
