I scheduled an appointment for 3 months away because "that's all that was available" they called 2 weeks be for the appointment and said the Doctor has to cancel, but I can reschedule for another appointment in March which is 3 months away. We've been going here for 10 years now and it's a great family practice--it's almost always possible to get an appointment for the same day and all the NPs and doctors are very empathetic and helpful, and the administrative staff are friendly as well. I switched to Somerville Family Practice a year ago after being fed up with a PCP at MGH. I was sick of feeling like another number at my PCP's office so I decided to go back to a private practice for my primary care, and after my second visit with the NP Anna I'm really happy I did. Anna remember me from my first visit, which to me was a big deal because my last PCP even after several visits could never seem to remember me. ..... Anna is great, she always makes sure that I am comfortable with whatever treatment plan WE come up with. I highly recommend seeing her. I also like that fact that it isn't metered parking there. It's easy to get an appointment and the staff always work with me so I book a time that works for me which I appreciate. All around great experience! read more

I chose these guys for my primary care provider because they're like a 2-minute walk from my apartment, and they're on my health insurance plan. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice everyone is there! I see Yael Myers, a nurse practitioner, who is very sweet and attentive. The practice includes another nurse practitioner and two doctors, but I can't comment on them as I haven't met them. I have a few chronic illnesses that bother me off and on, nothing major, but annoying enough to want something prescribed to me. Since I started visiting Somerville Family Practice for my medical needs I've been referred to two specialists and am trying some new medications that seem to work well. They're willing to work with me toward the goal of better health. Yay! Getting an appointment is pretty easy -- I've called at 8:30 when I stayed home sick from work and gotten an appointment later that same morning. If it can wait, they'll see you within a week or two. And for the women reading this, they do routine gynecological exams here and give you a CLOTH gown, which is so much better than the itchy paper kind, and warm up all the instruments. It's the little things that count for so much in these matters. After years of visiting my college health center whenever I was sick, I'm happy to have a real medical provider again, and I'm very satisfied with my choice. read more

Somerville Family Practice is appropriate for routine doctor visits, such as basic bloodwork, gynecological exams, flu shots or non-serious health complaints such as bladder infections. Heaven help you if you have a more complex problem that actually requires time and attention! As a patient at Somerville Family Practice, you will almost always see one of the Nurse Practitioners, rarely an actual MD. In the many years I was a patient here, I saw a doctor only two times. This is just not okay. I came into Somerville Family Practice at least 8 times during a two year span complaining of the same health issue, and was always placed with one of the Nurse Practitioners, who seemed calmly indifferent and clueless as to how to help me. No. help. at. all. None. I began thinking of switching to a different doctor's office a few months ago, and finally, this month, I met with my new primary care doctor for the first time. It was like night and day! Within ten minutes of talking with this new doctor and sharing with her the same information about my health issue that I shared with Somerville Family Practice, I had a wealth of insight into what is going on in my body, compared to two YEARS of fruitless visits to Somerville Family Practice. My new doctor is competent, motivated and concerned, where the staff at Somerville Family Practice was blank and staring - nothing is more frustrating for a suffering patient than an indifferent healthcare worker. If you are enjoying excellent health, and never need any care beyond routine yearly checkups, then sure, stick with Somerville Family Practice. But if you have any actual health issues that require an involved and caring doctor, run far and fast from this place! You deserve a real doctor. read more

As a Midwest transplant, it took me awhile to find a doctor's office that makes me feel at ease. Somerville Family Practice is the place. The receptions staff has been great! Unlike other doctor's offices where I've had to wait on hold or leave messages and wait for days for a doctor to return my calls, I always receive an immediate response here. Even if I have to leave a message, my NP calls me back within a short time period. Also, the reception staff is really friendly and responsive. Now to the haters of the NPs....Carla Collins is awesome! Why do you need to see a MD when you can receive just as good (if not better care) from a nurse practitioner. Carla is so patient and thorough. She never makes me feel rushed, and I actually feel like she cares about my health & safety instead of treating me like just another patient. The other thing I really like about her is that if she isn't sure about something, she will take the time to call a specialist and consult with the on my behalf. Then if she realizes there's an issue that she can't help me with, she will refer me to that specialist. I love this place, and I continue to drive/take the T there even though I've moved out of the area. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

I was initially scheduled for an August appointment, showed up for it, and was informed there was no appointment for me. They scheduled it for the same day and time....in September. So far I've been here once for a general checkup, and once to get checked out when had some flu-type thing that didn't go away as quickly as I would've expected. For the checkup I saw Dr. Martin. He asked all sorts of good questions, was happy to answer mine, and gave me no-nonsense advice on my way out the door. He even told me to spend more time on my social life! I appreciate a doctor who understands the importance of someone's whole well-being. Unfortunately, I don't remember who I saw when I had a bug. Everything was handled very efficiently, and again I left with simple advice. They took me seriously but things didn't get blown out of proportion either. I don't think I ever waited more than five minutes for anything here. The staff are always on top of things. You couldn't ask for a better bunch of family doctors. read more

I have been taking my 4 children here for 9 years. My wife goes here as well. After all these years of great communication and interaction with the docs and staff, only a note taped to the lobby window informed us that our Insurance is no longer accepted there....... No email, no discussions with us during our visits over the past 6 months(this change was effective 2 months ago). I was a patient here for 20 years under Dr. Martin and the office completely fell apart after he left. Every diagnosis includes a referral out to another specialist (costing you more money), doctors/nurses don't seem to care at all about the cost patients incur (Dr. Martin was very attuned to this), and the front office and billing is disorganized and not customer focused at all. They make mistakes, don't honor their commitment and won't return phone calls as promised. This office has become a real disappointment - look for your care elsewhere. read more

Dr. Martin retired and left last winter, he was the reason I was at this practice. Dr. Fishman seems good and I don't mean to put her down, but she wasn't fully my active PCP after Dr. Martin left, she was an interim figurehead. I understand that it could not have been possible for her to take on all of Martin's former patients in addition to her own (and I preferred a male doctor). I was told new doctors would be hired and waited a few months while I've been on my own seeking specialists elsewhere for a condition I've had since last winter. I'm not hitting it off well with the replacement I was assigned, I was criticized for seeking my own help for a painful condition, denied an insurance authorization for a specialist that I asked for, and the practice now seems rushed and overburdened, it no longer has Dr. Martin's pacing. The office is always accommodating and provides availability for my inconsistent schedule. There is always available parking and the office has been on schedule each time I've been there which is a plus. Since Dr. Martins retirement I've been seeing Dr. Dan Wemple as a PCP and could not be happier. He is attentive, personable, and compassionate. He follows up on all questions and any test results promptly and with a clarity that makes me feel comfortable with the care I'm receiving. I recently changed my primary care from a practitioner in Longwood to Somerville Family Practice. I was not expecting anything spectacularly good, but I was happy that I made the switch. Dr. Leora Fishman is probably the most caring doctor I have met in my life - she does not mind explaining things in plain English to me and making sure that things are going fine. I like her because she is knowledgeable and understanding. She sees the patient as a whole, not as a disease, which is becoming more uncommon in world of "Speed Check-ins". I highly recommend them. I feel very lucky to be a patient of Dr. Dietrich's at Somerville Family Practice. I've always felt valued, listened to, and treated with respect and dignity by the staff and Dr. Dietrich. She exemplifies what I look for in a family doctor-- she develops a relationship with you and works with you/your situation. There have been occasions when I developed an infection over a holiday and was able to call Dr. Dietrich on the phone and have her send a prescription over to my pharmacy. I can't tell you what a relief this is, knowing that I can get medical treatment from a family doctor on a day where the office is closed without needing to visit the ER or paying excessive amounts for an urgent care visit. Another great bonus of this office is that they offer a number of services that most general doctors do not. Blood work can be done directly at the practice, rather than having to go elsewhere, and they offer routine gynecological exams. The staff is friendly and on top of scheduling and appointments. My only criticism (and the reason for only four stars) is that I have had trouble with their prescription hotline/voicemail before. I've called and left a voicemail for a prescription refill and not heard back from the office. Similarly, my pharmacy has had trouble getting a response from the office when sending fax requests for a prescription re-fill. I've found that if I call and try to speak to an assistant in person or leave a voicemail not on the refill hotline that I have more success. read more

This place has no confidentiality between doctors and receptionists. I have sat in the waiting area and heard them voicing opinions on whether or not certain patients need whatever medications. I have been going here for my annual physical and GYN exams for the past 2 years and I have always had a good experience. I've met with all of the female doctors and nurse practitioners (there's only one male physician here), and they have all been great. Always very friendly and unobtrusive, they answer my questions thoughtfully, examine me delicately, and make me feel comfortable. You do have to call in way in advance to get an appointment, which can be a little frustrating sometimes, but I have never tried to get a same day appointment so I can't speak to that. I choose Dr. Martin for my mother's care about 8 years ago. She has Alzheimers disease and needed someone who can be attentive to her needs. We were so well cared for by Dr Martin. The nurses there are really kind and patient while taking blood-work with an elder person who is disoriented. When he retired Dr. Fishman was assigned to follow my mother, and it has been downhill since. First some of her files could not be found. Second Dr. Fishman was unable to write up properly a re-fill prescription for my mother's pull-ups Dr. Martin had prescribed, and now the insurance will no longer cover them and I need to pay for them out of pocket. I spent so much time going back and forth following up, finding the information she needed to do it successfully, but it failed. Then when we went in for our annual check up, all the doctor spoke about was how I need to prepare for when she dies, the paperwork that needs to be signed... While I can appreciate being prepared, she had no bedside manners and didn't take the time to know her needs. Now Dr. Fishman is refusing to refill a thyroid medication without me coming in with my mother who does not speak and barely walks, who is confused and with whom taking blood-work is a workout, to do more blood test in order to give he a refill for this medication. The administrator called me in May 2018 to tell me it has been more than a year since my mother came in, but in fact her physical was in September 2017, and blood work was done in November 2017, so she had the dates wrong. I clarified with her and I am really concerned that they don't even know when patients were last seen, and it is based on this misinformation that they make arbitrary decisions to refill or not medically necessary medication. Yikes! I expressed my concerns and the administrator told me I would get a call back, and it has been 2 weeks now, still no call. I called today, 15mn before they close, an administrator answered, I told them why I called, she put me on hold for 10 mn, I called back and the office was closed. This place should be inspected. This is reckless behavior, and I don't think they know what they are doing, which could be endangering patients who depend on them. I will definitely be looking for a new provider for my vulnerable Mom. read more

I love this doctor's office. Dr. Fishman is professional and compassionate, and seems genuinely concerned when I'm not well and happy when the issue has been resolved. After years of having doctors shove meds at me and send me on my way, it was refreshing for a doctor to appreciate my preference for more conservative approaches. She also always schedules check-in appointments after prescribing something to make sure it's going well. I've never had any problems with the front desk staff or getting my medications filled. read more

I am 47 years old and have been seeing Dr. Martin since I was 15 years old. There are not enough words to express what an amazing physician and person he is. I am awed by some of the complaints here about seeing an MD - if I call and have a sore throat - I see whoever will see me and get great care! - if I feel that I need Dr. Martin specifically or Dr. Fishman - I just ask and every effort is made for me. Marie and my mother would gab all the time before she retired and Nancy took over and has been great! Elizabeth is friendly - Maggie is wonderful! I really can't say that anyone I have ever seen has been nothing but kind, gentle and caring. But I am a health care worker and understand that you never expect the expected; emergencies happen, I understand if they run behind - I understand if there is nothing available immediately and I understand they are not a 24 hour service that should be available at my every whim. If there is an emergency - there is always the hospital. Dr. Fishman - honest and kind and gets right to the point - don't go in there with a cough and wheezing and say but I can't stop smoking - so just make the cough go away. She will counsel you, try to impress upon you why you shouldn't, give you options on education to help quit - but she can't force you to do what is right - so don't kill the messenger. Maggie - well she has always been so kind - love her treatment well -one girls opinion - but my whole family has and still goes there and if they make any mistakes - well who doesn't and if you ask them about it - they will fix it. read more

I chose Somerville Family Practice based on my girlfriend's recommendation and the reviews here on Yelp. It's also close to where I live, only a 5 minute drive away. My first impression was good, it was easy to sign up as a new patient and the receptionist (over the phone) was very helpful and was able to answer all of my questions, as well as set up an appointment that was convenient for me. When I arrived at the office it struck me as your typical Doctors office, but the receptionist wasn't confidence inspiring. She had trouble with some of the questions I had, but we got through it and shortly I was in the back getting my check-up. The PA (Physician's assistant) that I saw was great. She made me very comfortable and was very attentive. The woman who drew my blood was also fantastic, very personable, she really put me at ease. Unfortunately when I got back to the receptionist to schedule my next appointment they seemed unprepared and confused that I would want to talk to them. During my appointment I was given a referral to a specialist. I was instructed to make the appointment and call back to let them know when the appointment was so that I could get an authorization number for insurance purposes. When I called back to let them know when the appointment was there was again, much confusion. I was put on hold 5 times, and each time they would pick the phone up, ask who it was and why I was calling, and then put me on hold again! Finally the last woman I spoke to was able to assist, but she was very curt. I hope my experience with reception is the exception and not the rule, because the PA and other back-office staff were superb. read more

I love Somerville Family practice. I started going there because it is a short walk from my apartment. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes and that's always how it is when I'm there. I can get a same day appointment like when I have this scary spider bite or I can get an appointment in a week or two if I need. Yael is my favorite. She is so warm and friendly. I have only met my primary dr Leora Fishman once because I usually see Yael which I don't mind at all. I have seen Maggie too and she is great. I was a patient here from the mid 1990's until today. Approx 18yrs!!! I really wish I could just rate the Doctors in this office but I have to take into consideration the people who work at the front desk and office. They are so RUDE!!!! These are the people who greet you when you enter the office or answer the phone when you call. They treat the patients like crap and have major attitude problems. If you want a doctors office with great doctors and staff then DON'T go here. In fact, RUN!. I will never go back there again. The only way I would go back there is if they got new office staff. I have to say, when I decide to move to California I was heart broken to not be able to take Maggie Satterfield with me! She provided me excellent care, and even handled an emergency when I went back home and managed to catch Strep. The staff is super responsive and return calls! I usually got same days appointments for illnesses and issues. I miss Maggie and the wonderful staff there. If every medical care person were this awesome, it would be amazing.
