Having been a Caregiver for those afflicted Alzheimer's and Dementia for a number of years now, I…read morehave seen many memory care facilities throughout the city; my experience with this Brookdale care center was worse than awful. I had a client there several years ago, and I have never been so disgusted by what I saw, experienced, or felt. Maybe things are different now, but back then, it was really bad. What I saw: the residents at that time, were not supervised by staff when I was there, and were literally banging their walkers into each other. As they got more and more agitated, I chose to step in since no one else was around to. The residents were up wandering around at all hours of the night, and seemed to be free to go in each other's rooms; I, myself, witnessed other Brookdale inhabitants in my client's room. Some of her personal items turned up missing, and management couldn't account for either the missing items or intrusions; despite repeated requests, they did nothing about either. What I experienced: 99% of the time when I arrived, the residents were pounding on the locked door and shouting "get me out;" when I opened the door, they would rush me and try to leave. I I would do my best to stop them, but couldn't alone control disorderly dementia invalids who nearly bowled me over as I tried to get to my client. Once again, there was no staff in sight. What I felt: my stomach was in knots and I was constantly worried about my client...about her safety, health and welfare. We chose to move her to a different facility where she thrived. Interestingly enough, a staff member from Brookdale predicted that my client would get "kicked out" of any establishment for her behaviors. Instead, she did better than ever. It goes to show that positive attitudes, patience, understanding and staff members who are there can change anything

After visiting Sunrise, I was contacted by a representative at Brookdale. She was able to immediately schedule a tour of the facility since my dad was still in rough shape and going home was not an option. She was thorough and answered all of my questions and provided reassurance to my father. Brookdale has assisted living and rehabilitation on site. I received introductions to the department heads and knew this was a good spot to continue his rehabilitation. The facility itself is in an ideal location. We were allowed to customize his apartment so he could have privacy as well as room for family and friends to visit. His trip over in the Brookdale van was the "best ride he experienced since being hospitalized." (He had horror stories of transpiration to Kaiser appointments) I also had multiple friends and family compliment the facility. I was able to visit dad every day and even had lunch with him a couple times. His friends were visiting and eating with him too. One day he was working with Kaiser rehab and made it down to the piano and played a few measures for us. Cancer is a beast and my dad had an extremely aggressive form of kidney cancer, which sent him to the ER when the cancer fractured his spine. Although he was only at Brookdale for 10 days he did have a good stay and his pain meds were given in a timely manner. He lost his fight with cancer 14 days after leaving Centers at Lincoln. I can't thank Brookdale staff members enough for keeping him comfortable for what happened to be his final days.

My previous review was for their rehab area of care. This is for a tour/eval of their memory care…read morearea of care. The memory care is a smaller, more intimate set if rooms (14?). There is one room which is a double (less per individual cost), but the rest are single, private rooms. What makes this a charm of a place that the care givers seem really engaged in the resident and resident's family. A good set of events and comradery of residents was very evident. When we visited, an ice cream social just ended and most all of the residents were outside enjoying it. It was a super warm environment and felt like all were part of a bigger Brookdale GV (Greenwood Village) family. The room we saw had a bathroom with a shower. As with other places, you furnish your own room with your own items (bed, dresser, etc). On the down side, the single room was smaller than what was being looked for and did not include a refrigerator nor kitchen/sink area. There is also a non-refundable initial fee which makes it difficult to chose their place with enough confidence that you are sure it is a match before you try it. Their memory care area is in the first floor in the same building as their rehab. Their Assisted Living is in a separate building across the parking lot.

I truly believe…read moremy dad would still be alive had we not put him in this place for 7 days for rehab to get home after a hospital stay. I met him there the day he was transferred from the hospital. I immediately called and texted pics to my brother and said I don't have a good feeling about this, he's going to fall! I prayed I was being overly worried but sure enough the first night he fell & there after he fell at least once a day sometimes 2 or 3 times.. every time I went in the nurse would say he fell again, that's if a nurse made an appearance. I asked what they could do about it?! he came there for rehab. He hadn't walked in 3 weeks prior and was there to get his strength back.. and they just let him do what he wanted. I asked can they move rooms different bed any options?! all they would say is oh , we can't restrain him. Yes, I'm aware of that. I said I didn't ask you to restrain him. I said he is falling! What can we do? Of course I got the cold shoulder like why is this woman asking us questions? I would love to see it if it was their parents in there how they would act! And I was being calm. I hope they would be advocating for their person. And the sad part about it is every complaint and worry I had, came true. He fell more times than days he was there and was actually sent to another hospital for one of the falls with over 20 stitches in his leg, then back to BROOKDALE against all of our wishes then, while we were frantically looking for a place to transfer him, they sent him back to the original hospital by ambulance a few days later saying that my dad was being 'combative and confused' Of course he was! He was so severely dehydrated the ER said his kidneys were shutting down and the Dr at ER said that it looks like my dad was disheveled and severely dehydrated, thinking he had come from home. I told them no he has just come from a Brookdale! They couldn't believe it. So much so I pleaded with them to not send him back there and they agreed and admitted him back at the hospital. I watched him get 4L of fluid in the ER at and come back to life again within an hour.. He fought hard & lived another 10 days but never recovered from all that and passed away at the hospital. He missed his first grandchild's first Christmas. I wish someone would've warned us. I was there every day and I couldn't do anything about it except try to transfer him out of there, but it was too late. I wish I would've listened to my gut and took him that very first day put him in my car and went back to the hospital. He didn't fall once while he was in the hospital and he was in the hospital a total of 20+ days.

My mom has lived here for approximately 5 years now. At first, it was really fairly decent. Sure-…read moresome minor complaints about food but overall good. The service she has received in the last year has dramatically declined. I am constantly left wondering if the administration is completely inept or just following a corporate direction to make more money. Communication with administration is quite difficult. I cannot reach anyone to address an issue without being overly persistent and finally rude. Several specific incidents to report. #1- my mom fell out of bed in the early morning and pressed her call button for help. She pressed it several times over the course of TWO HOURS while lying on the floor. When I brought this up to the management- she seemed appropriately appalled but apparently not concerned enough to ever get back to me with what had happened. My mom recently moved into an assisted living unit in this center- and we were asking to see the new contract on a daily basis. They were very unorganized. Literally the day before ( or day of... can't remember which), the contract was brought to us to sign. Since we were sitting amongst all her packed boxes- I guess it's a good thing the contract and services were in line with our expectations! Now however, after about a month in the unit- Mom has been told of an additional charge which was not in the contract and it's not for a service she needs. She was even told that "her daughter (me) agreed to it over the phone"- I certainly was never contacted. It remains unresolved with no real explanation of why this charge is necessary except for some vague references to "policy". I think the front line care workers here are good and they are caring. However, you have to put up with bad administration in order to be there. If I hadn't just moved her and if we weren't in the midst of a pandemic- I'd move her right out- because this is just the tip of the iceberg. Find somewhere else- but see how easy it is to get in touch with them and how crisp and knowledgeable they are about details- you'll be glad you did.
