My fiancé and I recently planned a weekend getaway to Port Stanley (from our home in London, ON), and we were thrilled to dine at Solo On Main during our first evening in town. I called Solo On Main to book a reservation for two on the day of our arrival, and the gentlemen who answered the phone sardonically laughed at me and told me that I wouldn't have a chance of booking a reservation in Port Stanley on a Friday or Saturday night in December. He represented himself as the owner/. chef of Solo On Main and recommended Kettle Creek Inn....in a tone that suggested that Kettle Creek is a gross, last resort, but our only one. When we arrived in PS, we decided to give Solo On Main a try anyway, and to our surprise, they were extremely quiet and sat us at a cozy table almost immediately. Our waiter belatedly arrived at our table to take drink orders, and he was eager to rush things along. At one point, he grabbed the menu from me to take a closer look, so that he could answer a question that my fiancé had about a particular drink. I recognized our waiter's voice immediately as the gentleman who answered the phone when I called to make a reservation, which was disconcerting, to say the least. After a long wait, we ordered drinks and dinner from our waiter. When my fiancé's Whiskey Smash (apparently the house cucumbers were tainted) arrived, it was an underwhelming, watered-down, strange cocktail....My fiancé politely asked for an extra shot of whisky to doctor up his drink and immediately clarified that he fully expected to pay for this shot. Our waiter responded in a scathing and condescending tone, saying: "this drink is not watered down. You just let the ice melt." The waiter was shaking when he took the drink away, as though he was in an anger and drug-induced rage. We asked to speak to the manager, and we recounted our experience to her. She stood in front of us blinking like a zombie deer in the headlights and never attempted to apologize, until I called her out for not apologizing, yet she still defended her waiter. She told us that "he helped [her] open the restaurant." She obviously didn't care about the way he treats patrons- perhaps because she is no example herself. She seemed relieved to loose our business. I wouldn't recommend Solo On Main to my worst enemies, if I ever have them :) read more
