Working with this company has been an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE on every level. The quality of work of…read morework and the quality of service would make your head spin. They were very nice up front but it became abundantly clear that you get what you pay for. There was absolutely no attention to detail and I literally had to provide oversight through every step of the process. I tried to give them the benefit of doubt all throughout the process but it wasn't just one thing. 1.) They failed to cover anything with plastic: There was wood dust on every surface, in all the electronics, and even on the dishes. I ended up having to have the house professionally cleaned. 2.) Zero communication and oversight from the lead man: I saw him once throughout the entire process. I literally had to watch the entire process and continuously point out areas missed and even HAIR that was coated into the poly coat in multiple places. 3.) Literally Hair. 4.) I was forced to take days off of work because the quality was that suspect. They didn't even show up one of days and the lead man was rude about it too. 5.) Trim pieces: I literally have enough spare trim (that they charged me for) to do an entire house. A typical contractor would measure and purchase about 20% extra for overage. Definitely not the case and they didn't even finish installing all the pieces! I literally found 2 pieces that weren't nailed in and one that was never even installed and still isn't. 6.) Left all the old trim in my drive way for me to dispose of. 7.) It's now 3 months later and the floor coating is flaking away. 3 MONTHS!!!! That just blows my mind. Not only did I have to have my wife and newborn out of the house for two weeks but now we'll have to do it again. 8.) After the process was complete I discussed my displeasure with the owner hoping he would make it right. He didn't and I should have followed through with my review then but I didn't. Now that the floor if literally flaking away and no one will return my calls or respond to emails over a 3 week period, it's time to share this with all of you. If you get anything from this review, PLEASE do your research and look for recommended source. Not a pretty website and a few good pictures.

I wasn't going to write a review of Brown's Hardwood Floors, because he did redo them after the…read morefirst fiasco, but my satisfaction has decreased with after-the-fact issues. Ty Brown was replacing the laundry room floor and refinishing the living room/ dining room. The adjacent kitchen / den area had been refinished about 4 years previously. The biggest issue I have with his work is with the color-matching. He asked if I wanted water-based stain. I said something to the effect that I thought they had used water-based stain on the previously refinished areas, but literally said, "I just want it to match." I did say that I knew it might not be exact, because I had seen that the color changes slightly over time (I was referring to the fact that the color under my rugs was slightly DARKER than the color that was exposed to light). I was out of town while they redid the floors. A friend came by to take care of my cats. And despite the fact that I told him TWICE and reiterated in email that two cats would be in one room and the other cat would be in another room--and I put actual SIGNS on the doors saying "CATS (and the cats' names)--he left the exterior door to one area with cats open and both indoor cats got out. My friend and Mr. Brown's worker (she was awesome) were able to retrieve the cats (after I saw the outside door open on my security camera and alerted my friend to the issue). To give him credit, Mr. Brown took off the charge for replacing the sub flooring in one small area (6 SF) to compensate, so that in itself wasn't too bad. It worked out okay and Mr. Brown made it right. But I got back from my trip and saw that he hadn't stained the new floors at all!!! What?!? When we did the walk-through the next day I told him I couldn't live with them like this, and he grumblingly agreed to redo, after telling me that he thought I had understood that the color would turn amber over time and match(!!!). I had to hurriedly find movers to move all my furniture AGAIN, and he and his worker (who was excellent BTW) came back on Sunday and redid the floors. He was much more positive and taking complete responsibility then (no grumbling), and he did reimburse me for the additional furniture moving (because I had paid extra for his team to move the first time). He brought two stains and we both agreed one looked good. He and his worker spent all Sunday lightly sanding and re-doing the floors. The colors looked good initially--maybe when wet?--but seem to have faded--see pics below. They are much better than the "no-stain" floors, but still not what I would expect for a match from a hardwood floor expert. To to top it off, when the second movers went to move my corner china cabinet, they found that both glass shelves were broken. Apparently they hadn't removed them before moving. To be fair, I didn't tell Ty about the broken shelves, because I was so effing tired of dealing with him. I think he would have reimbursed the money for the glass shelves ($400+). The hiccups with the furniture moving etc. I could deal with. Letting the cats get out I can deal with. What I have trouble with are two things. First: the color once dried is nowhere near a good match. Did they skip additional coats? Did it lighten that much when drying? Second, and most importantly, he told me with the initial lack of stain that the color would "amber up" with time. Apparently OIL-based stains will amber over time, but WATER-based stains will fade in the light (as I had observed). WTF. I can only conclude that he tried to take a short cut, thinking I would not question it. This is not okay.

We've had our floors refinished three times. The company that initially refinished them (NOT…read moreBrown's Hardwood Floors) did such a bad job that the owner agreed with me that it was such a terrible job that he would refinish them a second time at no additional cost. The second time they were refinished, they were much better but darker than the floor sample stain color that had been selected and there were numerous dips and ridges in the floors due to terrible, uneven sanding. We were not happy with the second results either but we had to accept them in order to move into our home. Later, a pipe broke and ruined all of our first floor hardwood floors so we did our due diligence and researched other hardwood floor refinishing companies in the area. After interviewing many companies, Ty Brown and Brown's Hardwood Floors stood out as clearly the most knowledgeable and competent company in the area. We were not disappointed!!! In fact, we are thrilled with the results of the refinishing services provided by Mr. Brown's company. Our floors are gorgeous and everyone who comes into our home comments on them. The best part is that they are perfectly flat and level with none of the dips or ridges that we previously hated. Ty and his crew are truly artisans and by far the most professional and reliable company that we have worked with in the area. And he had our home professionally cleaned after the floors were completed so we were able to return home and move right in to a spotlessly clean house - amazing!!!! There is no doubt in my mind that Brown's Hardwood Floors is the premier flooring company in this area. And I can prove it by inviting people to search out their reviews across the internet. I have never seen such a large number of 5 star reviews (hundreds!) and Charleston favorite awards, for any other company! And I trust them because our results match what the reviews say.
