The pub is beautiful and cosy, the landlady was kind and cheerful and the food.....oh god, the food! We both had a starter of pigeon, not something you usually see on a pub menu and it was superbly cooked and tasted amazing. For my main I chose the steak burger with chips and onion rings, the burger was big, flavoursome and juicy and the touch I like is that the tomato ketchup on table was all homemade, not from a bottle! Fortunately, we've visited enough times to know that the Red Lion isn't a risk. When you first step in, the Red Lion always feels a bit chaotic. You're instantly faced with the bar, where all orders go - both drink and food - so you have to gauge where the actual queue is and who is just meandering around. There are a few 'pub' tables set up, with mismatching stools and the like, but step into the back and you're suddenly in the dining room. Recently extended, we were sat in one of the newer parts of the room, one a large table with some bench seating. The menu is a sprawling list of everything you could possible want; fried fish, normal fish, curry, spag bol, burger, chicken and chips, cheese boards, desserts. The one thing that really got me here was that, despite these fancy new dining tables etc, the system hasn't changed; you still have to go to the bar to order your food. And there's one person taking the orders. But there's all these new tables! Be prepared to wait. Once you do get your food, you'll remember why you came. If you like chips. Everything comes with a mountain of the crispy, salty, skinny fries. Perfect. I went for a cheese and bacon burger, first night holiday indulgence, which was delicious - not one of the best I've ever had, but hearty and filling. Our numbers dropped one, so my mum and I went in at lunchtime to let them know, so we weren't taking up too much room - they said that was fine and thanks for letting them know. When we arrived later on, my boyfriend and I before my parents, I gave our name and they didn't have any record of our booking. I'm sorry, what? We just came in at lunch - and my dad booked it over a month ago. Was it under any other name, they asked - well, no, unless you're the ones who have taken it down incorrectly! We were assured (no apology given) that we would be able to have a table within half an hour. So, we went and sat down in the back bar area for some drinks. Cue a 40 minute wait, after which my dad had to get up and ask if our table was anywhere near ready. Yes, they are just paying up - an excuse we'd heard before on a past shaky experience. We were seated 10 minutes later in the dining room and handed our menus. The offerings at The Crown are something a bit different compared to the rest of Southwold; paired with The Swan down the road, this is one of Southwold's finer eateries. Noone offered any help with the menu or explaining starters/specials until I asked. I opted for the gnocchi starter and duck main. Both were quite tasty, though the gnocchi was fairly flavourless - the addition of courgette didn't help! My mum's lamb main came grey, not pink, and with no potato or vegetable addition - quite odd. Noone knew who was eating what, suprising for somewhere supposedly priding itself on silver service. I requested a wine menu part way through the meal and it came quickly, though noone offered to take my order, despite the main meals coming and me obviously sitting with it in my hands. We weren't asked once during our meal how we were or if we were enjoying our food. Maybe they knew the answer. At the end of the meal - coming to around £150 for this experience - our receipt was just plonked on the table, folded up numerous times. You get a silver tray with mints in your local Indian! This was the straw that 'broke the camel's back' and my mum decided to speak to the manager. He didn't pull himself away from putting the money away in the till and blamed the missing booking on the fact the bookings come through The Swan - even though my dad spoke directly to them. And we saw another table having the same experience. He focused completely on the missing booking rather than the poor service and we all left feeling angry and disappointed. Hopefully, The Crown will pull its socks up. Until then, we wont be back.

The back room is my favourite bit, though: smaller, pubbier, with more wood on the walls and benches, a better spot for a pint. A further room to one side, accessible from either front or back bar, is the restaurant area that serves some quite fine dining. You'll get several Adnams ales here, of course, since their brewery is in Southwold, just around the corner in fact. The hotel is owned by Adnams.

We only ate once; the set up of the Harbour is much more for the family crowd, with us even witnessing chairs on tables at 10pm one night - not for the night owls. The seating upstairs, around 5 tables, is the only 'adult only' bar in the place. This is generally on account of the location of the Harbour, inbetween Southwold and Walberswick, with no real access to anything other than the pub. Food is their mainstay, so fair enough. It was busy when we arrived last Wednesday, but we managed - thanks to my mother's elbows and ability to spy people readying to leave - to grab a table within around 15 minutes of arriving. The menu here is fish heavy, naturally, but there are plenty of options for the non-fish loving. I opted for the ribeye steak, served with a tomato, mushroom, onion rings and chips. Everything was delicious and I really enjoyed my steak; it was the perfect colour for me and oozed juices, meaning I barely needed to add anything (apart from a dash of ketchup - so sue me!) Around the table, we also had a starter/tapas portion of sea bass, which looked fresh and inviting, a juicy burger, with what was definitely a handmade patty on account of how easily it fell apart!, and vegetarian fish and chips. Now, this was battered halloumi - fried cheese seems to be a massive thing at the moment, and the Harbour didn't dissapoint. It was salty but, washed down with a pint of Broadside, my dad managed to power through! All in all, family friendly, but don't be put off - you'll be able to get some great grub here. Lunchtimes are their busiest time, so be prepared to wait.

But then something happened which is an absolute no-go. I had a fishcake as main and when I have taken the first bite it was so unbelievable hot that I have burnt my tongue, it was so terrible. Even now, almost 24 hours later, it still hurts. I can't drink a coffee without pain. I guess that a very inexperienced person in the kitchen heated the cake too long in a microwave. It's the only explanation for this extrem temperature, I never experienced this before (and I hope will never again).  This is the reason why there should be a ban for microwaves in kitchens. An US American would have sued them for damages. Nevertheless I rate three stars because it is a lovely inn and I hope they read it and will change something that this will never happen again.

Due to this location, it's always busy at weekends and during food service. We always pop in for a pint after wandering around Southwold, but we also ate here. At first, we sat down outside, underneath a clever covering - with various heaters placed by the outdoor tables, it's easy enough to sit out with too many complaints. However, on one trip to the bar, a free table had come up inside so we quickly nabbed it. It's all about the elbows! We started with some chicken wings, which were big and shiny with sauce, but not as hot as I was expecting. As they were wings, they were pretty hard to eat, but we managed! I went for the green thai main (chips really do get tiring!) served with sticky rice. It tasted like it came from a Lloyd Grossman jar, but I didn't expect anything more - and it was still bloody tasty. There was a huge portion of chicken, and corn and green beans throughout the sauce, so I was practically getting some of my 5 a day right? Everything was super filling and good value for the money paid. Head in for an afternoon pint and to play some cards. It's what it's made for.

The tasting room at the end was really fun and gave me a (non-committal) chance to try a lot of their offerings. (From the US and not so familiar with cask ales). Lazy Sipa and Ghostship were highlights for me.

The shop is one of the most standout things in Southwold; glass and light wood make up the exterior, and inside it's vast and full of light. Here you can buy everything Adnams makes, and more - gin, oak aged vodka, sloe gin, broadside whiskey, a range of beers, glasses, tshirts, tea towels and more. You can take part in some tasting towards the back of the shop, or have a coffee and piece of cake in the cafe at the back. New products available include ginger beer and Fat Sprat beer. If you take part in the tour, you're presented with a 10% discount, leading to us walking away with some sloe gin. Apparentley it's great with prosecco - who knew? The checkout staff were lovely, even giving us some baking tips, and you always walk away with a smile on your face. A must do in Southwold!

I saw it on someone's plate and just pointed, "that's what I want". Come to find out they had made it special for him and did the same for us. We had just missed the lunch service but were made to feel extraordinarily welcome by Nick, the landlord, and were in no way treated like outsiders because it is very much a classic chocolate box village local and we'd come eighty miles from Cambridge to this sleepy Suffolk village. We were even given bar snacks on the house to make up (somewhat) for our disappointment at just missing lunch. But because we were treated so nicely this really was no problem at all. Great atmosphere, beautiful location. Will have to visit again to sample the food! Phone in advance, it gets booked up quickly.
