Installation was a long mess, but I won't get into it. The real issue is that, now that the system is operational, our production is low and the company doesn't see a problem with it. I have been asked by Solar X to not post a review, but they are not interested in doing anything to change the situation, so why would I not help others see the whole picture? I was letting the system do its thing over the summer months, but was then stunned to actually have to pay money for electricity in August (you are supposed to be racking up $$ in the summer to pay for the winter). First, there are a couple factors in this that are not the fault of the company: 1) you have to pay more than $50/month in electricity delivery fees in Toronto and 2) our usage was 1.5X what their projections were for us over summer, because the previous tenants of our house had left it vacant. However, what we were sold on, and what we paid for, was the actual solar production. In the pitch document that they use to sell you on the system, they provide clear per month projections of output and underneath they say that the projections are 10-15% conservative. Nowhere does it suggest that you should expect less than this. We are well below their estimates every month...based on what their app tells us, and depending on whether I take the high or low end of their projections, we are only hitting 62.5-77.5% of expected production on average per month (May-August). We have a 9.02 kWh system and our output is even below the projections of the 7.38 kWh system that they originally quoted us. The company does not accept responsibility for this and says that they do not guarantee any level of production, pointing to a clause in the service agreement. This is certainly not the impression that anyone would get from their pitch documents, but it is in line with what they told me when our installation was absurdly delayed, pointing to a clause that said they could basically delay as long as they wanted. It is what it is. But if you're considering them as an option, just understand that the numbers they put forward aren't actually meaningful or binding in any sort of way. read more

AVOID SOLAR X AT ALL COSTS - Nightmare Experience with Extreme Delays and Poor Customer Service. It took over a year to complete and was only completed because I relented on my need for a battery as my request for the greener homes loan program was expiring in a few weeks and with the Christmas season any progress before the deadline was very unlikely. I was supposed to get a battery with my system but because of poor employe training and turnover rate they failed miserably and had every excuse in the book on why it was delayed and that it was never ordered in the first place even with emails proving that i wanted the battery intergrated into the system. Now I have a system that doesn't fulfill my needs and no battery. I put my trust in Solarx and they have failed me and my family. Don't let the same thing happen to you go with another company you will be happier. read more

This was the worst renovation experience of my life. I originally signed the contract to install on December 1, 2022 and by the terms of the contract the work was supposed to be completed within 6 months. The contract was supposed to include a free EV charger, and everything installed. I also said at the time, and several times thereafter that I needed a manual override switch installed for my generator in case the grid goes out (because, if the grid goes out, the solar panels won't supply any electricity to your house - go figure!), and each time they said it would be done. They never did install the switch nor did they install the EV charger, but the main work was completed the last week of January, 2024 - a full 14 months after signing the contract and then the project manager of Solar-X writes an email saying the Transfer switch and EV charger was between me and the sub-contracted installer to discuss. This is the same installer who installed the panels unevenly, didn't cut the rails to exact fit and made the power cable very unsightly along the roof and around the gutter. The communication was terrible with Solar-X. The Project manager would only respond to my emails if I threatened small claims court and then only if I also cc'ed the main email for solar x. Every time I asked about when the work would start and be completed, I kept getting an apology, an excuse, another promise and then another deadline passed without the work being completed. I learned not to bother trying to phone the project manager because he would say one thing and then if it didn't happen, I had no proof. The first delivery of material was in November (two months after I was told the installation would be completed). And when the electrical installers did arrive, they found out that there were some brackets and the inverter was missing. They did some work on the roof and left. The next electrical installers came in December and said the first installers did everything wrong and spent another day on the roof but there was still no inverter so they left. but said they would be back before Christmas if the inverter was delivered. The inverter was delivered, but they said they couldn't come and would be back the first week after January 1st. The electrical installers still didn't show, and when I complained, the project manager sent a team of 4 people from Toronto (4 hours away) to come and mount the inverter, but they didn't hook anything up because they weren't qualified. The electrical installer came almost 3 weeks later. Their front office was no better. I was sent a payment plan agreement in March, 2023 with an interest rate of 10.49% and then in December, 2023, they sent me a note saying I had to sign a different agreement because they made a mistake and it was now at 12.9%. They also called my roof a steep slope and would have to charge me $1000 extra for a scissors lift to install the panels, but they never did bring in a scissors lift and the project manager said if they didn't need it, they would deduct this from the final price. It was not deducted. I would suggest that you run, don't walk away from this company. Every time I anticipated that I would need to write another email or think of the next excuse I would get, my blood pressure rose at least 20 points. read more

In fifty years of home ownership and dealing with contractors, we have never been as frustrated and disappointed as we are by Solar-X. The company has failed to deliver the installation its representatives promised. Before contracting with Solar-X, we explained repeatedly that our primary objective was a solar power system that was independent of the grid (not potential financial savings) and would incorporate our stand-by generator. Only after repeated verbal and email assurances on the points we raised did we accept the contract presented to us. What we have received from the company is: (1) A system ("Net-metering") which shuts down when the power grid is down, i.e., is ENTIRELY dependent on the grid being up; (2) An aesthetically crude (for a Heritage District property) finish with improperly trimmed panel support beams and "critter-ridder"; and, (3) A wiring cavity made by electricians in an exterior wall left thermally uninsulated; The response of Solar-X to these issues has been repeated, unfulfilled, promises of resolution, followed by silence. So, for anyone considering this company: BEWARE!!! If, based on the professionalism of its sales staff, you decide to proceed: (1) Ensure that your contract includes a definite project completion date, with specified financial penalties for the company for non-performance. Our "expected" installation date of March 13, 2023, dragged on - with communication from the company only after repeated prompting - until July 5, 2023. Installation of solar panels took three days. The crew commuted many hours from Toronto each day and worked into the dark hours each day. Electrical wiring began only on July 21 and was not 'completed' until the next week. Solar-X did not "commission" the system until August 14. To accomplish that, its personnel had to trouble shoot and correct wiring that had been improperly installed or connected. (2) Get any assurances from Solar-X personnel in writing (not email and certainly not verbal) before signing any contract. We did not learn until the ESA inspection on July 26, 2023 that what the company had installed was not what it had promised. To date, the company has, in verbal exchanges, attempted to blame its failure to deliver on us, rather than on the tunnel vision and inattention (or incompetence) of its planning, design and initial implementation personnel. (3) Do not execute any contract that requires you to make final payment before Solar-X demonstrates that the installed system functions properly, that the whole project is completed to professional standards and is aesthetically satisfactory. Solar-X would not "commission" the system it installed until we had paid the contract amount in full. Our choice was to pay or wait indefinitely for all outstanding issues to be resolved. The company has not, to date, finished the hands-on work satisfactorily. Nor has it offered any proposal to rectify the failure of its employees to deliver the system for which we contracted. (4) Insist that your site survey be done by a qualified professional engineer and that proper, exact measurements be made. In our case, the site survey was done by someone who made a quick stop en route to or from somewhere else, who arrived without measuring equipment or even a ladder, and whose "survey work" consisted of photos with a cell phone and a drone camera. All design and engineering work, prior to the arrival of the panel installation crew, was based on estimated measurements. It was not until the panel installation crew came on site that they (not designers or engineers) came up with, and proposed on the spot, the most efficient and appropriate panel configuration for our location. (5) Be prepared for long delays due to poor work planning, to the frustrations of dealing with a dysfunctional company, to poor communication and to being passed through a succession of personnel and managers, most of whom communicate in dilatory fashion and pay only superficial attention to your project. [Further to my review above, a Solar-X team arrived on August 28 and (a) trimmed the mounting beams so that they were aesthetically appropriate and (b) filled the cavity in the external wall with foam thermal insulation. (They also redid part of the wiring in order to restore the system's operation, it having stopped functioning the previous day.) Although I did run into some problems due to a poor installation done by a local subcontractor, Bill, the owner of the company did do everything possible to fix the issues. All is good.
