I took several hand-knotted carpets to Solak Rug Repair for professional cleaning - it was a mix of rugs that were purchased in Nepal, Pakistan, & Afghanistan, and all had been stored. They smelled musty. In a pretty short time, Solak Rug Repair returned the carpets in good shape. One had some moth damage on the end, and I didn't have hope I would be able to use it again. Mehmet offered to remove it by cutting off the damaged end and weaving it closed. The work was well done - it is smaller, but now I can put it out for show. I am happy with the work, and - icing on the cake - I thoroughly enjoyed talking and learning about different kinds of carpets. Mr. Solak recently repaired my old antique Persian carpet that was unraveling at both ends. He did a wonderful job of securing both ends and fixing the warps so that they were even. My carpet looks beautiful and is no longer coming apart. Mr. Solak very graciously dropped the carpet off at my home after it was repaired. I couldn't be happier. Mehmet Solak is a craftsman of the sort that are all too rare. He took our beloved 100 year-old hallway kilim and repaired multiple holes, making it better than it was when we bought it more than 20 years ago. As others have described, we made an appointment for him to come see the rug. When he determined it was worth repairing, he took it back to his shop. A week later, it was back, better than ever. In fact, it's impossible to find where the holes were! Mehmet is one of only 5 skilled rug repair people in the country, and we feel so fortunate that he lives and works in Seattle. I feel extremely fortunate to have found Solak Rug Repair. My Mother's 40 year old carpet tote (she carried this on every trip to see me) came to me after she passed last year. The loomed rug material and the seams were starting to look a little worn and I didn't want it to deteriorate any more - I also wanted to be able to use it without damaging it more. Mehmet restored it back to a functional, solid bag. He was even able to devise a way to fulfill my wish of increasing the stability of the bag. I wanted it to stand upright and open when set on a surface and he added beautiful ribs he made from rug fibers that he integrated beautifully into the bag. I was also concerned about setting it on the ground, so he added a complementary leather bottom to the bag. Mehmet is a true artisan. He took my old rug from 1950s Afghanistan and rebound the edges, repaired a rip, and locked the fringe. All of this made an old 'hand me down' from my grandparents into an heirloom we'll treasure. I contracted with him to repair and clean 1 old carpet (unknown origin but Mehmet was able to identify it for me) and 2 Turkish kilims. Everything about this experience was superb. His communication is excellent. He is professional and clearly knows carpets/rugs and is in particular an expert on antique carpets. His work is impeccable. As a bonus, he is delightful. Our carpet/rugs were delivered today and we could not be happier with his work. They are restored to their former glory. As Mehmet put it, "the colors are smiling now." Mehmet was a great find! I have several handmade, wool, natural dyed oriental rugs of various sizes which had gotten very dirty over the last few years. One of them was also unraveling at the ends and needed to be fixed. He came to our house just a few hours after I called him, inspected and measured each rug carefully and gave a very detailed quote. He also talked to us about the origin of each of our rugs and the patterns, etc, I could tell he was very knowledgeable and really loved his work. He turned around the rugs faster than he estimated (only one week for 8 rugs) and each of them looks clean and beautiful. Better than they have in years. The repair of the unraveling end was perfect. What I learned from Mr. Solak enabled me to decide to spend *nothing* on my '50's era wool Persian rugs because their value didn't warrant extensive work and expense. He demonstrated for me -- on the sidewalk out side of his business location -- how to effectively get rid of dust before attempting to wash the rugs myself. He also said, as we talked in March, to wait until August to wash them because quick drying is better for the fibers.
