The grounds are quaint and idyllic and there are the most docile little chickens clucking The tasting room is teeny tiny and dark but there has rarely been more than one or two other small parties whenever we're there so it never feels crowded. Absolutely wonderful winery! We stopped by on a Mon afternoon and had no issues getting a tasting. We got 2 tastings so we could taste all of the wines and Every. Single. Wine. Was delicious. We bought 2 bottles. The winemaker knows what they're doing and these wines are 100% worth the stop. A hidden gem in Valle de Guadalupe. Doesn't have the frills of some big names, but the wines, in my opinion, are absolutely outstanding. We will definitely come again the next time we're in Valle de Guadalupe. PS. It's close to Contemplacion Boutique Hotel. We were very impressed. If you want a winery that doesn't mass produce and is smaller, this is your place. I highly recommend. read more

Generous pours on the tastings. That probably stands out the most from my one hour experience here. The views are nice as well. There are certainly more impressive vineyards as far as scenery, but the staff was very friendly, yet moderately attentive. Here you get 3 samples unless you want to add the lone premium blend as a fourth. I would recommend this spot if you have lots of time, but probably wouldn't consider it a must-do. read more

First, you could not ask for a better guy behind the counter. He smoothly transitioned back and forth between English and Spanish so that none of the customers felt left out. He was extremely friendly and had a positive uplifting vibe about him. And, he did a great job of explaining each wine and the story behind the winery and the tasting room / cava itself --- and the story of both is fantastic. Tried a few of their wines and the chipotle cheese I saw in their display case (they don't make the cheese, but are a reseller). We bought a bottle of their wine and one of the cheeses. The red that we bought there was our favorite red over two days of tasting wines in the region. The cava was cool, in architecture, decor, and temperature! Also, they are dog-friendly, allowing us to bring our pups into the man-made cava. Although one previous reviewer commented on the road being bad, I completely disagree. We drove to this in my low-clearance Mazda 3, and had no troubles whatsoever....it is the 2nd winery in on the dirt road, and was quick to get to with no ruts whatsoever. There was only one disappointment: After buying a $25 bottle of wine and a $10 hunk of cheese, they still charged for the single tasting that I purchased.... It really irks me when wineries don't apply the tasting fee to bottles of wines purchased. Maybe the owner/management will consider changing this in the future. Nonetheless I still loved my visit here. Definitely stop in here for a tasting! read more

Don't plan your VDG wine trip by looking online, start right here and just follow the path. We're happy we did! We got into VDG a little bit late so we asked our AirBNB host where the closest good winery was, he sent us to Sol y Barro which was about a mile up the road. We had a huge list of wineries picked out and this was not on it. We arrived about 30 minutes before closing but we found Daniel in the tasting room. He's a seriously awesome dude who grew up a little in the US. He works in the tasting room and in production so he can answer any questions you have. Overall the wine was a great introduction to what VDG wine can be, we just didn't know it at the time. After great conversation he gave us a list of other places to visit and off we went to dinner. The next day we started by going to some wineries that we had picked from online reviews, videos, marketing, etc....they were all awful and couldn't compare to the wine poured at Sol y Barro...so we pulled out the list of wineries that Daniel suggested and started visiting those. Each stop was a spot we didn't have on our list, each had great wine, each had wonderful people. Each stop led us to new friends, new wine, new food... If it wasn't for Daniel and Sol y Barro I'm certain I would have left VDG with a "salty" aftertaste....instead our trip was incredible. read more

The wine it's just ok, the Grenache it's probably the only one good. Their Tempranillo wine was terrible!! You can taste the metal in the wine. The guy providing the tasting was a douche! Not friendly with the costumers at all. I would say skip this place and hit another vineyard. read more

What a fantastic hidden gem! Sol y Barra is the passion project of a retired Swiss gentleman that runs the entire vinicola on his own. He makes the wine, takes you on a tour of the property, walks you through the tasting and even built all the buildings from clay himself! The wines are phenomenal and his story is even better. This place is AMAZING! Small selection of the wines they make and each one was wonderful. I went with a group of four and we know our wine. We bought a few bottles to take home. The space was really relaxing not crowded and had nice outdoor and indoor seating. The location is beautiful, the staff was great and the place felt really comfortable and authentic. So disappointed with our visit. I was very excited to visit and enter into the hobbit like winetasting room. Once we arrived (7/28/18) a woman greeted us on the path, I asked if they could accommodate our party as there were 11 of us and she was very pleasant and welcoming. Once we entered the wine room there was a "couple" (man & woman) already inside. The hipster wine-tender(WT) greeted us with a pompous attitude. We chose to ignore it. However, before we could get started the WT made faces and remarks in Spanish about our group to the "couple" and proceeded to speak to us in English in a patronizing manner. My husband finally was bothered with it and said something to him. My husband could clearly hear what the WT was saying in Spanish to the "couple". The WT responded to my husband "you are being condescending to me". Clearly this smart-alecky WT was not apologetic and was not familiar with what condescending means. My husband was blatantly letting the WT know we could understand what he was saying and we not going to stick around and be treated poorly. The WT behaved in a derogatory manner as the WT assumed we did not speak Spanish and could not recognize His Condescending Comments. Needless to say we did not stay and made our way to Tres Mujures which is up the road. There we had a great time with delicious wines and a beautiful accommodating and gracious wine-tender. Solybarro was such a disappointment. read more

We enjoyed the wine tasting here but it is a very tiny space! Very close to two other wineries which worked out well for us, as parking is a little difficult. None of the wines stood out to me, but I enjoyed the setting and with a few others so close you could make this a nice stop! read more

Lovely boutique winery along the main road, but you have to take a beat up/bumpy road to cross the valley to get here. Be warned, taking these shortcuts often requires a 4 wheel drive, which is fun and adventurous as long as you have the proper vehicle. The wines we quite good - the Barbera was very good, and the service was friendly and warm. The location is interesting, in a "cob" building that is similar to "adobe" style that keeps the room at a constant and cool temperature. The tasting area inside is small, but they have a patio and lots of outdoor space that they encouraged us to use in between glasses. The tastings are expensive ($15) for 4 wines, and we found that consistently throughout this area, which was surprising for such a young area in Mexico (Napa prices for tastings!), and we listened to a young California couple try to negotiate their tasting price out of a bottle purchase without any luck. I think the wineries are still trying to figure things out here, but it's an interesting area, which will certainly continue to grow and change over the years. It's good to see it now before it becomes a large commercial, tourist area. One of the things I loved about this winery and others in the area, is that they all have signs posted outside saying "NO NINOS" (no children). A good reminder that these places are adult playgrounds only. read more
