Soif is a new coffee bar concept that opened in downtown Durham in early March this year in the old Snow Building space (from the same owner as Delafia). During the day, it serves coffee, and at night, it flips into a cocktail bar. I'll admit -- I didn't really want to go at first. The menu looked almost too bare-bones: basic coffee drinks, no rotating seasonal specials, no WiFi, and a tiny space. I kept wondering, "Why would I go here when Delafia already exists?" Thankfully, my dear friend urged me to check it out, and I'm genuinely glad we did!
The space is exactly as pictured online and in my mind: tucked into a narrow chamber off the Snow Building lobby. There's barely enough room behind the bar for bottles, syrups, and equipment, and really only one row of seating inside. But the place feels cinematic. We pushed open the heavy doors of the old Snow Building and immediately see bronze mailboxes lining the wall, black-and-cream checkered tile floors, and tiered glass pendant lights that echo the building's original fixtures. Inside the little cozy bar itself, there are no more than a dozen seats, styled like a pulp-fiction diner, plus a standing rail and a couple of small round tables spilling into the lobby.
The menu is thoughtfully scattered throughout the tiny space -- simple, no-frills coffee at very reasonable prices to match. There's no register; you walk up to the bar and order your coffee (felt like I was having a drink). Newspapers sat on the counter. People quietly read while they waited. Others casually took a stab on the crossword puzzle together. It was quiet, but in a relaxing, comforting way. The warm and friendly barista moved with quiet grace and efficiency while making drinks and happily shared about the beans they use (i.e., Vignette coffee from a Greensboro roastery). We ordered a hot latte and a cold brew, and both were smooth, mellow, and well balanced. High-quality beans for a surprisingly affordable price point (our drinks were around $4 each).
Reflecting on the experience, I think I understand the charm of Soif and highly respect it. This tiny space has such a strong identity and a distinct sense of presence at downtown Durham! It's not a work-friendly coffee shop like Oak House or Yonder nor a spot for creative seasonal drinks like The Durham or Montwood. Instead, it has carved out a very intentional niche in downtown Durham: a quiet, mindful communal space where people can simply exist together. It may not become my everyday coffee shop, but I'm genuinely glad a place like this exists in Durham!! read more
