I'm well past those days when I would buy Trader Joe's two buck chuck if I wanted to enjoy a weekday bottle of vino. As I'm not very particular about the wines I drink, I'm glad Soho Wines is nearby with a selection of cheap (but not Franzia quality!) bottles. They're conveniently located next to the escalators and they have a decent range of wines to choose from. I can't be bothered with corks so my eyes scanned the shelves for a screwtop and there were easily a few! I spent about $200HK for a bottle of Australian Shiraz and it got the job done. Had I walked passed this store only 2 years ago I wouldn't have even noticed it. Wine? I'm neither female nor French, would have been my initial thought. However, nowadays my shallow view on wine has evolved to the point where I can now pronounce some of the names. I walked in and was greeted by the staff behind the counter, a quick hello was all it took to make me feel that little bit more welcome. The set up is a little strange, half is renovated while the other half is not, not that it effects the wine or spirits! All the bottles are arranged alone the walls so it's easy to walk around and pinpoint the exact one you are looking for. I went in looking to surprise my girlfriend with a bottle of Aperol and prosecco (and eventually make her Aperol Spritz), and to my surprise they had Aperol! The only other place I could find it apart from Il Bel Pease. As I was wandering around I also noticed they had other drinks I've never heard of, like Mongolian Vodka in a really, really cool bottle. I also saw a couple bottles of Patron - a definite party favorite! They also sell shot glasses, wine glasses, and martini glasses for the desperate ones. The convenience of the place, ease to buy, and range of products makes it a shop I'd return - if I lived in the area. However, knowing that it does have some of the rarer brands I'd still make the effort to get there in times of need. It's always nice to know there's a place selling Mongolian Vodka. read more

Soho Wines & Spirits has Black Isle Goldeneye Pale Ale!!! Hints of mango and grapefruit, a nice beer to drink with any meal or with friends. The guy working there was sort of helpful and introduced me to other beers with more robust citrus flavors and a hazelnut brew to boot. However, the prices were exorbitant but not as bad as a beer at the bar, and pack of 6 craft beers was about HKD$235. Location is far from everything but it was easy to find I. I like supporting small businesses so even though I get membership points at Watson's Wine down the street, Soho wine is my preferred store. I generally swing by when grabbing a bottle en route to a dinner party. They have a fantastic range of proseccos which can be bought both chilled or at room temperature. Obviously if I'm heading to someone's home, chilled is the preferred option. The store is decorated like a cellar which is cute but I'm a little nervous navigating the aisles which are narrow. There are always sales taking place and the staff can talk you through the range so that you walk away with exactly what you want. In fact, the staff are generally extremely helpful whether you ask for assistance or not and it's worth listening to them as some of their offers can save you a decent amount of cash. Soho wines also have glassware, corkscrews and so forth as well as some spirits - my tequila loving cousin assures me that their range is the best but tequila and I have not been friends since 2003, although that's another story. Although a small store, the selection of mid range wines is good. More serious purchases are not their forte but some nice bottles are available if you're looking to show off.
