I came from one of UCs where the gym is fabulous so my bar is super high. To be honest, I was…read moreextremely disappointed when I visited. Well later I learned this is the best of all five in New Brunswick campus. The following are the reasons why it's such a disappointment to me: 1. I'm a morning person and prefer to workout first thing of my day, yet gym only opens at 7am which is already not early. On top of it, it changes hour to 8am, or 9am, sometimes to 11am during breaks or summer. sometimes won't open at all. If you're serious about training like me, you must be familiar that consistency is key. Yet the schedules make me think the gym is against morning people. 2. The layout of fitness room is a train wreck to be honest. Machines are way too close to each other. One can be in other people's way even when working out. It's not just inconvenient, it's actually DANGEROUS. Plus, there's only ONE machine for each exercise. The whole fitness room probably has the size of two decent parking garage. Which is WAY too tiny given the number of people on campus. 3. The whole building is POORLY designed. The parking lot is on the opposite side of the building so you get extra walk because of poor design. Another thing is, the building size looks decent yet it has so tiny space for fitness room. 4. The power lifting room is okay. It only has 4 squat racks and 2 deadlifts platforms. Not even 1/3 of my previous gym. But surprisingly, not many people use them anyway so it's good. There's always a space when I go to in the morning. So two stars are for the power gym. 5. The swimming pool looks great but I don't swim that much so the star doesn't include swimming. To summarize, if you use the gym mainly for lifting, you can go and get work done but don't expect too much more. My star might be biased cuz I've seen one of the best. But it's good for those who never have seen better because they won't have as much disappointment as I have.

I'm at Rutgers year round as a graduate student working on Busch Campus. When I have time to work…read moreon my fitness, it's usually at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. This building is kind of strangely built. They have the main door to the gym all the way around the opposite side of the building from the parking lot. This is really annoying when it's rainy or cold or snowy and you have to walk around the needlessly long poorly designed path. The parking lot itself is way too tiny, especially when they open the gym up to high school swim meets and other special events. The way it's designed is also poor, since the positioning of the isles creates a bunch of blind turns. I've seen a few accidents here over the past few years. Once you're inside, they also insist on swiping your RUID badge when you walk in, which can get irritating. They have an Olympic sized pool which looks pretty nice. The general gym weight equipment area is way too small for the number of students/staff that are on this campus. They have rooms for spinning and racquetball as well. There are a bunch of classes you can take at the gym. They are quite cheap for Rutgers staff/students but it's sort of insulting that they aren't put into the tuition in the first place. Most of the classes are enjoyable though. I especially like the spin classes and RUFIT (which is kind of a mixed stations work out class). I just wish they had more classes later in the evening. The gym closes at 9pm and there are larger stretches of the year where it isn't open at all for breaks an things. The scheduling is inconsistent and always changing which can get confusing sometimes.

This place is ridiculous, the AC hasn't worked all summer. Have you ever tried to work out indoors…read moreon a 97 degree day?! Torture ESPECIALLY in a Tuesday night spin class because Athena is EFFICIENT! Only for her work to be rewarded with pure laziness and undesirable conditions, every time we come in, another bike is out of commission. The speakers in the cycle room don't work! Working out in SILENCE is one of THE MOST uncomfortable things to do! Especially at a monthly rate!!!!!!!! Going to the gym is already annoying but under these conditions, it's harder and harder to lose the weight because its like I'm fighting myself from going to the gym. Not because of fitness but because of TORTURE! Temperature torture, uncleanliness torture, equipment torture, slipping & tripping TORTURE. There's never any wet wipes! In a post Covid society, that's unacceptable , it should be a crime. Especially in a place people are always IN. Then come to find out, they're trying to get rid of the paper towels too! Which we're already moistening by pumping the hand sanitizer onto.... Can you say "GHETTO ?!" Ghetto in PISCATAWAY?! C'mon, HOW?! Absolutely unacceptable. There were holes in the gym ceiling for months to the point night volleyball games were beyond hazardous . Liabilities to say the least! A slip in there at volleyball playing speed can take you out of work for MONTHS. The sauna works on & off in spurts... really just depends on the day. They need more people teaching more classes all day! Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday's don't have enough to choose from. I joined this gym for cycle classes, aquafit & volleyball Not only do they not offer enough of them , aquafit is once a week very early, & I already mentioned why volleyball and cycle were a bust! (For the record also, Juliet is a fantastic instructor as well) Going to the other location is NOT conducive for me because I live down the street! Why should I be inconvenienced by somewhere I PAY TO BE?! Please! Help us! We've had enough at this point, it's truly a negligent situation we're facing & again, for a monthly Fee, doing something most truly don't want to participate in anyway.... The GYM!

Day 2 I go in to use the guest pass again and I scanned in my guest pass just as I did yesterday, and signed the form they wanted me to, I was taken behind the counter to the membership desk with employee, Zayd, and was told since I already used the guest pass yesterday under my sisters I couldn't today, she doesn't have a direct LA Fitness pass and doesn't even have guest abilities. I let the guy know I came yesterday and had never come prior to this gym. I was told I couldn't use it today or again for that matter. I asked to speak to the GM, his name is Amari, and he flat out said that I either needed to pay the $20 for the day pass or leave. I asked to see the guest pass policy that states that I couldn't use it for all three days and even showed my email from LA showing that. I then left the gym feeling frustrated, I called the corporate number that LA lists and after explaining our situation he got in contact with Amari from the location, who then decided to issue the 3-day guest pass to me so problem solved. In all, it should've been explained to me why that happened and why I couldn't use it, I was very much considering using this gym as it is much closer to my home and offers different benefits from the one I currently go to. But now, since being treated unfairly I do not feel as though it is worth it to go here to have employees who simply do not care or give any decency to people wanting to come here.

Write this review as an update to my original month ago, it is a continued excellent experience as…read moremember here as our family continues to come for twice a week for 48 weeks a year. Every aspect from staff to facilities to programming to to member administration have all been tops and perfect. They have all the skills, experience and tools with which to carry out their mission realized every hour of every day. It is such an important instrumental part of the community and we are so lucky to have their organized support therein. First the swimming: the aquatics program is infamously strong for every person of every skill from limited abilities all the way through Master swimmers with a few Olympians along the way. But really it is the everyday swimmer who comes and enjoys this experience with others simply and quietly that makes the quiet community so happy. Aquatics instruction can be variable but is generally very good. As always, the key is communication with the instructor and student both. They are every type of instruction in every type of format for every type of swimmer. There are three pools: warm, less warm, and cool (for the athletic types). If it's always wonderful for having very shallow, one for splash padding and acclimation as well as a infrequently open slide (seemingly just 30 minutes each Friday). Gym is extremely well equipped with every imaginable type of equipment and then some all in good quantities and state of repair. Shout out to the janitorial staff who do the unseen work of keeping everything as great, clean and sanitary as it needs to be. Thank you also to the maintenance and and engineering staff and supporting contractors for keeping his facility as good as we always hope it to be. The front desk does all welcoming individually with the card scans as well as having the green green rings for the under 12 swimmers to indicate they have passed the deep swim test. Member services are complete. The staff is knowledgeable, aided by how the IT system can keep up with all the requests. That system is online and self-service so takes care of most of your needs. Parking is always platiful with a vast space which has never run out of parking even during the annual car show days which takes more than half the lot. The lot is also used for a large number of community events so be sure to watch out for them as some are free to the public, not even only members. Life is better with the GSCYMCAband especially the Somerset Hills location.
