This scam is an oldie but goodie whereby a very authoritative "Detective" from the FBI calls from a spoofed number to inform me that my SS number has been used in a crime along the Texas/Mexico border and my account has been frozen until I cough up a trove of personal information and perhaps pay a fine of $2,000 to make the entire incident go away. I would have played along just for grins but I was busy and just told the "Detective" that I would call the local FBI and SS offices in the morning to confirm. Click. And just like that my career as a border bandito and fugitive came to an end. Basically. If the SS administration wants to get in touch with you they'll write a letter instructing you how to respond or where to call. If a call of this type finds you it is one hundred percent bogus. Hang up... providing no information whatsoever. There's no shortage of scams out there ranging from 50% off your cable bill (for a small fee) to more insidious hackers trying to infiltrate your PC or laptop with malware all in the name of "security." Stay safe out there. Five stars just because. read more

This SS office could use a better speaker system, a monitor that works so people can see the numbers and actually have people who works than take so many breaks. They have over 10 windows but it's only 1-4 windows open (went there twice, same both times), and they need so many breaks. read more

I'm leaving this review for a woman that works there, her name is Ashley. She was my representative for my appointment today. And she was literally the nicest person in that establishment. She is great at her job, she made sure that me and my sister were very satisfied with our appointments. The last lady we had, tall, dark-skin, glasses, older lady....very rude and dismissive. Especially given our very difficult situation we had, thus is why we were there, she had no patience with us. That's why I give her 0 stars. Her attitude was really nasty, maybe she was having a rough day, but that's no excuse because we were very respectful. On the other hand, Ashley deserves a raise lol just as much as the praise! read more

Social Security Administration has my FIVE BIG STARS. If I didn't pay into Social Security all my working years I wouldn't be able to live here in Manhattan! What I paid from my paycheck is a fraction of what I have gained in income since I was eligible to receive Social Security Benefits. Social Security has really tightened up the online website. If you are not tech savvy I feel sorry for you. I've learned a lot about my benefits and get my annual income statement. I definitely pay taxes on my Social Security you know! I'm writing this for everyone to be reminded about the scams. Attached is the information sheet SSA asked us to share. In these days of information overload we must stay focused and mindful of every email, text, and phone call. I hope this information from your Yelper Helper is beneficial for you either now or in the future. I'm sure if you are working you're looking forward to retirement! read more

My appointment was at 10:20 to complete a Representative Payee application. The process took less than an hour and I walked out the door by 10:59. Ms. Gallagher was kind, efficient and very knowledgeable and she throughly explained the process and gave me pointers on how to succeed in my new role. read more

Extremely disorganized. Checked in on the computer and received a number. Then 45 mins later, started getting messages that they're ready to serve me, but a different number was mentioned in the text. I didn't check in online - no idea why I was receiving texts about a different number. It was very challenging to understand the numbers being called out on the speaker & for some reason, the big screen didn't reflect those numbers being called out. Workers seemed overwhelmed and flustered. Why are more appointments being taken in than the office can handle? They were running behind by more than one hour. Why isn't security ensuring that everyone who enters the office has an appointment? Workers were wasting so much time explaining to people with no appointments that they might not be able to see them that day. Overall, didn't expect this low level of service from a Social Security office. read more

Easier contact for making an appointment when you're trying to straighten out business when your loved one has passed

Apparently when the workers get paid they take the rest of the week off, and they get overwhelmed to the point they will tell people to come back the next business day... It's really horrible today, and they only have 2 workers today,.. read more

The women that work here are RUDE and NASTY and have nasty attitudes. They are so nasty to the costumers and god forbid if you are struggling to speak English they are even nastier. You wait HOURS to be helped and then once your number is called as everyone else says they rush you! Please do not go here unless you want to ruin your day. read more

They mean well but the waiting area is woefully inadequate for the volume that that particular facility sees. The staff were very patient with some really irate and awful patrons. The staff remained professional, I had a very positive outcome and results, their error was immediately taken care of. Thank you Staff!!! read more

Displeased .. and disgusted!!! This has been the most unproductive and unprofessional experience!! Not only I have , I been here on three different occasions but I still wasn't able to complete my task! I received misinformation from the intake which never disclosed that my marriage license didn't have a current date, they allowed me to get all the way to the back for completion only to tell me that I needed more information. The security is worthless and there is no organization! Who's the supervisor??? Like really! I don't have this type of time to waste only to never get anywhere? Please do better DMV DISTRICT GOV!!! Better quality of customer services and outlines of exactly what customers need to complete and expedite their process. read more

So today I came in early thinking that I could possibly get seen sooner, but out of all the office space this building has its only 2 people working today on a Friday.... you would think a place like this would be better staffed, but no it's the opposite... This place is horrible, and not to mention you have to watch your car because ppl try to break into them... if you come here keep your fingers... read more

Came here with wife to get her SS card. The good: 1. Friendly and warm staff. 2. Good for people watching when waiting to be called. 3. Less than 10 minute walk from the RI Ave metro station. The bad: As Holly said, you really have no idea when you'll be called. There were people that arrived after us that were called up much earlier than us, while there were a few people who had been waiting when we arrived, and were still waiting when we left. Total wait time: 1.5 hours Total time w/SS staff: About 5 minutes It wasn't my worst government office experience, but wasn't my best either. read more

I waited over an hour which I don't mind, but to be pressured and hurried by the staff is unacceptable. The lady attending me made many unnecessary comments like " I'm too young to be writing that slow. " I'm filling out a form, but she's trying to make me fill it out fast like this isn't important. Please go to a different location if you want to have a good day because the staff have nasty attitudes read more

I can't speak to what this office is like when it's crowded, but we arrived about 30 minutes before closing on a Monday with maybe a dozen people there waiting. We were in and out in about an hour. Some of the folks waiting to be helped seemed a bit sketchy, but everyone working there seemed efficient, helpful, and friendly. Rossy at Window A took very care of us. Overall exceeded our expectations for a government office. read more

The line is long and slow but that's because SSA is still running outdated CoVID policies. Ms Ashley was so helpful even though we should have gone to the D St office; she got in touch with her colleague there to transmit our documents. First-rate service! read more

Woof. Becoming an American Citizen sure has a lot of steps you don't realize. One of them is to go to a Social Security office in person for them to update your files. You have to wait at least 10 days after you receive your citizenship certificate. There are a few offices in DC but this was the closest metro accessible office to me. They're only open weekdays 8am-3pm so I had to take a day off of work. It was a less than 10 minute walk from the Rhode Island metro. I recommend cutting through the TJ Maxx/Giant parking lot for a safe, easy walk. Right next to a gas station in an old building with just a banner saying "Social Security Administration" it already looked a bit sketchy. I got there at 8:58am and there was already a decent line outside the door. They opened the doors promptly at 9am. I was 19th in line. There were two security guards. We were told that we had to stay in line and wait to be called one by one to a window to get our ticket to be put in another line to be seen. That ticket would have a number that will be displayed on the TV screen in the waiting room, but they will also call your full name. While in line the guards did a good job of telling newcomers what to do, reminding everyone they needed an official ID, pointing out where the Social Security card forms were, telling people to take phone calls outside, and generally keeping order. There were at least two people who were outraged at having to wait in line and one who was especially disruptive. There were heated words exchanged but one guard deescalated the situation and everyone kind of laughed it off. I heard an agent calling names for appointments. I couldn't find any information about how to make an appointment, but I'm sure that would save time. There is a quick use machine for easy tasks and those people got to cut the line, understandably. I got my ticket at 9:39am and sat down in one of the seats to wait. I was called to a window at 10:03am. I got out my filled application, my ID, my citizenship certificate, had a brief chat with the agent, confirmed my address, and was given a confirmation page. I was done with her at 10:07am. All that waiting for such a brief and pleasant exchange! My information was updated and I will be getting a new card in the mail. I'm not sure how early the first people got in line, but if you need to go to this office expect to wait. read more

After reading many horrible reviewsy expectations were low but I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived and stood in line a short period of time before being called to a window to get a number. The nice lady that helped me was from Cordele, Ga and pleasantly answered ally questions. Even the security guard was nice when I asked a question. The hardest part was the wait. I needed a name change. I entered the office about 1 and had to wait until a little after 2 before my number was called. That's the only complaint I had. When my number was called the young lady that helped me was friendly and got everything done in a matter of minutes. The place didn't smell horrible; I wasn't alarmed by the clientele. No one bothered me and everyone helped me. After reading the reviews I expected something different. Thank you for good service! read more

You wait patiently over an hour in the line, and once you arrive at the window, you are hurried by the workers, so they can serve the next customer. There's a few workers behind the window with nasty attitudes, which effects the customers day. It's bad enough when the customers have to endure the devastating wait time. I'm not sure if the workers think that by having a government job gives them the power to treat customers any kind of way, or what. The service is not exceptional, and really should be looked into by hire authorities. read more

I am writing regarding the excellent service provided my grandson Malachi G. Urquhart by Social Security Administration representative Ms. Hightower today at the 1905-B 9th Street NE, DC 20018 location. It was my grandson and my good luck to meet with SSA representative Ms. Hightower again. The last time we saw her was December 2016. It was a blessing then and it was a blessing today. Ms. Hightower explained she needed to update my grandsons records and patiently took her time asking the questions required. Whatever questions my grandson had and there were many, she stopped and took the time to explain the answer in great detail making sure that he understood. At the end of the meeting she asked if him if he had any questions, he had none, and thanked him for allowing her to be of service. Ms. Hightower continues to be a breath of fresh air, very polite, exceedingly knowledgeable and very efficient. She has a delightful personality and continues to display an excellent work ethic, all while doing the very best job possible. Promote this young lady. She could teach a class on how to provide excellent customer service. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and for employing such a wonderful young lady. Best Regards, Pamela Urquhart read more

Please, save yourself the angst and go anywhere but here. It's run down, always packed, and generally unhelpful. It can take over an hour just to get through the line to get on the docket, and I don't relish spending that long in a place that needs to remind you with signs every few feet that weapons are not allowed. I could deal with the unpleasant environment if the staff were capable, but after I submitted my application for name change in person here, I received my social security card in the mail to find that they had legally changed my name to the wrong name. So here I am, back in this godforsaken line, begging you all to save yourselves the trouble and go to a different SSA office. read more

Ashley Corley helped me at this location and she was excellent. She took care of my problem quickly and educated me on my options. She smiled the entire time with great customer service. This is the only Social Security office I will ever go back to. The line was short the customer service was great and they actually knew what they were talking about and took really good care of everyone there. I'm so thankful for that young lady Ashley and May God bless her! read more

Went in on a Friday at 2pm and got in and out in a about 35-45 mins. The staff was friendly. The only reason it's wasn't a 5 star experience is because directions to wait in line when there is no line formed was confusiong. I sat down right away when I should have stood in a line to be called. The security guard I asked about taking a number or writing down my name did not correct me. I only realized that you actually need to form a line when someone who obviously been there before stood and waited. But good experience none the less. I suggest going on Friday afternoon. read more

Was nervous to go because of the reviews, but was in and out in 30 mins. I just missed a rush of people. In at 2:45, out by 3:05.

Came there on a Thursday to get replacement SS cards for my wife and 2 kids. Had applications filled out. Arrived at around 12:00 left at around 230pm. There was a line that wrapped all the way on the inside of the waiting room. The line moves OK, but not fast. Wasn't aware that this line is just for "check-in", then they tell you to sit down and call you up. The agents were overall nice. They processed the application for both my kids and gave their passports back. My wife's signature didn't match the signature on her passport, so the agent white-out the sig and told me to come back in with the correct sig. She put her initials on a post-it on the front of my app. She indicated that she will pull me out of line and process the application if I come in tomorrow. I had the app signed and just decided to mail everything in instead. Overall if you just need to get a replacement SS cards, just mail everything in. The only advantage of physically going into the office is you get to keep your original documents, w/o waiting for USPS to mail them back, or possibly getting lost on the way back through the mail!!! read more
