I file my own taxes and I am strongly opposed to taxes but for the sake of living here I have to file them and I do not want to go to jail. I recently got a notice from the IRS saying that I owe " X" amount of money. The thing is though is that I paid my taxes when I amended them in February and they took out my money from my bank account. I get a letter saying that I owe the same amount that I paid initially the only difference is that they added 34 cents on the IRS end. So all these guys really coming after me over 34 cents perhaps ? I wanted to call and correct them on this because I'm being held hostage about paying my taxes yet again before a certain deadline or I'll be paying more interest for something that they should see in their own account that they took out of mine. Unfortunately there is no one to call and navigating the phone call it's like walking on eggshells . I want to say I've tried about 50 times to call the IRS and I was unable to get a hold of a single human. Overall, I know I will get this money back one way or another. Maybe one day we will be like all other countries where we don't need to pay for having to get our taxes filed and like most modern countries do. Never written a review of the IRS previously. Taxes have always been somewhat of an efficient process. Definitely processed within 4 weeks. Many people this tax year, 2025, have taxes that have been sitting stagnant with no updates for 30 days +. Calling the IRS is pointless as they just say wait up to 9 weeks. Their website says 21 days, which is completely useless, if they can willy-nilly change the processing time whenever they feel. They are also requiring multiple people to verify their taxes. American citizens that have been filing taxes for 30+ years. And then tell you to wait up to 9 weeks to see what happens. Completely unacceptable and ridiculous. This new administration is completely inept. And the folks they fired from the IRS were definitely the backbone of the department. They need to bring competent workers back in office. We pay our taxes diligently all year long, and hope that when its refund time, they would be just as competent and efficient in processing them, since this is not a surprise and tax season repeats year after year. read more

Certainly, Intuit's TurboTax deserves some credit for this review, but I can't help but be surprised that I'm focusing first on the IRS. So, what's the BIG DEAL? I got my refund in 3 days! Yes, you read that right - THREE DAYS! I filed my taxes electronically through TurboTax on February 10th. I was then notified about two hours later that the IRS had accepted my filing. Submitted my 2025 tax return, electronically on 3/6/26, only to receive a notification for correction of form 5695 (Energy Saving tax credit) for purchase/replace the of my A/C unit and hear pump. IRS claims I was missing QMID on the form. Upon review of my original return, The QMID was listed for both units? There was no other details=clarification as tge what tgey were looking for and getting in touch with a rep is near impossible. Ive been out of work, take several meducatio s (diabetes etc...) and Im running out of money. I learned it takes 60 days to handle the submitted revision (which there was none). So, five months to receive ny refund. Perhaps, I'll get and attorney and charge the IRS, interest for unnecessarily delaying my refund...I'll also ask for reimbursement for any E/R visits for not having my medications if I run out or they can pay my funeral expenses if I drop dead? I understand this is a busy tax season. However, if the federal government can allocate funds to international aid, newly created departments, and increased compensation for certain officials, it is reasonable to expect that sufficient resources could also be allocated to adequately staff the IRS during peak filing periods. At present, it is extremely difficult to reach a live representative. Hold times are excessive, and even after waiting, callers are often disconnected or told that no one is available. The IRS is prompt in sending written notices, but the same urgency is not reflected in its phone support. Taxpayers are instructed in these letters to call specific departments, only to be met with automated messages such as, "Due to high call volume, we cannot assist you at this time," or advised by other departments to "keep trying" with no meaningful alternative offered. This level of service is highly inefficient and frustrating for taxpayers who are attempting in good faith to comply with IRS instructions. Taxpayers should not be required to call every day, with little to no chance of speaking to a representative or receiving timely assistance. Strengthening IRS customer service--particularly during tax season--should be a clear operational priority. read more

Wait times 2 plus hours Wait times 2 plus hours, no real help available, one change is a wait of 4 to 12 weeks. Got disconnected after an hour on the phone just to start over again. I have logged dates, video record of calls for a running time stamp of how long it takes to get a person on the line, have names and badge numbers for each call. If I owe money I am subjected to huge penalties and interest but if the IRS owes me money I have to wait 4 to 12 weeks. The website is a mess and consistently incorrect. Payments received not showing. Believe it or not married filing jointly causes huge problems when owing because the IRS will put one spouse as Primary one year and the next year the Spouse is Primary. So you have this Primary and Secondary going per the IRS for yearly filings that does not combine as jointly when making payments. It's a huge mess on the taxpayer. Every year my husband is the taxpayer and every year I am the spouse but the IRS gets it twisted to make it difficult in payments received. I cannot believe as a tax payer that my paid taxes fund such an incompetent federal government agency. The IRS representatives are no help and give you non-sense information to get you off the phone. The can I put you on a brief hold for 5 to 7 minutes all thru our the call is a waste of time. Filed a Form911 for a tax advocate...another 30 day wait just to see if they will respond and it's up to their discretion to even help you. Not even an automated response that your form has been received. Just wait the 30 days before you call. The hardship in wait times, lack of knowledge in helping the tax payer and the weeks on end in hopes of a remedy is disgusting. Treasury Dept website is down so no complaints can be filed and they do not answer the phone as well. I am so sick and tired of federal government offices. Social security is just as messy. At least a year ago I was able to talk to a human who said they will research and get it processed. Since then, it is easier to talk to a wall. You would think if the IRS really wanted their money, they would invest in better technology infrastructure to support their high volumes or idk - invest in just modernizing enough to where people can do things on their own. Instead, simple requests, like trying to change the bank account that you're paying with, require phone calls. Ironically enough, the phone system tells you that most things can be done online (I guess we haven't tried to use our own systems, because when you go online, it tells you, this can't be completed online and provides a phone number to call). Then comes the phone system. I thought the Post Office had the worst website and phone system. Then the IRS said "hold my beer!" You call and IF you actually get to the queue area, its HOURS on hold (not even joking, do this on your day off because as far as these people are concerned - you have no life - your life revolves around them and waiting on hold). What's more than likely to happen though, is the phone system is going to tell you that due to high volume - kick rocks and try again on a different day - and hang up on you. I've tried calling different days and times over weeks and nothing. I'd say keep thorough logs of ALL attempts to contact them because they'll likely have the nerve to come after you for evasion when you've been trying to make things right for MONTHS (or maybe YEARS). I had to have my 2023 taxes amended. Every time I call them, they give me an over extended time frame for when my taxes will finished being processed. It started out with 60 days, then 90 days, then 180, and now back to 60 days. They have customer service reps who either whisper or have a thick, harsh accent. When they are owed money, they will garnish wages and even confiscate property. When they owe you, they could care less. read more
