This can be a nightmarish place so Yelpers, pay attention.
1) Do not think about even dressing like a thug or someone about to rob a convenience store. You will get pulled over, thoroughly searched and your belongings examined at the security checkpoint. But more importantly, all the people you will hold-up and have to wait while your stupid a-- is getting the ringer and torn a new hole, those people will be shooting daggers at you with those looks of annoyance.
2) If you have to get a SS card for your baby, think twice if you REALLY need to bring all of the diaper bags, a giant stroller, etc... Be like Rick Steves, pack efficiently and dress appropriately. AGAIN - DO NOT HOLD UP ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO GET THROUGH THE SECURITY LINE.
3) This building has a food court on the 2nd floor. So combined with the SS office and this food court that attracts many business people around, you best be quick and efficient with security. TIme is money and we don't have time to wait for people.
4) When you wait in line to go through the metal detectors - think of it like the airport. Just bring what you need to bring, stick your bags/purse on the conveyer belt, make sure you have no coins in your pocket, take off bulky jackets and also send them through the machines, and then wait for the nice security men to signal you so that you can go through the metal detectors. It's painless and takes like 1 minute. Unless you're the idiot I'm referring to at point #1.
5) Go up the escalators and instead of following your nose to Taco Bell, make a right and go up the next set of escalators - walk across and you're at the SS office. Note, it opens at 9 am.
6) Go straight to the computer kiosk and get a ticket # - this gets you in the queue. It does not mean you will get an order of deli meat salami with your request.
7) If you need to correct a birthdate, apply for SS card - FILL OUT THOSE FORMS ON THE DESK. WILL SAVE YOU 5 minutes. But do this AFTER you get that ticket from the computer.
8) Grab a seat...and be prepared to wait...and wait. Till your butt cheeks run out of circulation.
9) Avoid crazy people who want to talk aloud to you - this place should be quiet like a church mouse, aside from the TV monitors which serve as background noise.
10) Avoid grumpy grandma lady in Window H. She is going to try to put you in your place, regardless if you're unable to understand what she is trying to have you do because she rarely utters more than one sentence... There is no helpfulness or clear answers from her. "Ma'am you're not listening". I'm polite and I nod, in fear of being sent to the end of the 50-people long wait line. In my head, I'm screaming "Ma'am, I do not know what you want me to do, I cannot hear you, and I do not understand how those instructions relate to my situation. Please be more articulate." AVOID her like the plague, or wear some lucky underwear and hope she doesn't get assigned to you. She is the cross-looking, thinning haired woman with the glasses - kind of like a school marm. People who hate their jobs should go find another one...instead of this woman who takes pride in making others miserable and belittling them.
11) Once they figure out your deal, you'll most likely have to have a seat AGAIN. This time, be prepared for the 7-year cicadas to arrive. But don't you dare sleep - because if they call your name aloud (which is part II of the process), and you don't go up to the specified window in time, you will lose your spot. Be prepared to repeat the entire process again. If you're a dude, you just might grow a 4-o'clock shadow from waiting. And if you're a dudette, then you just might experience hot flashes and menopause. It is going to be that kind of a wait.
12) If luck is on your side, you will get one of the men assigned to help you with your request. Special shout out to the guy in Window J - he was so polite, helpful, and personable. Totally a-typical for most government workers we see in Chicago. Can you believe, that this employee ACTUALLY helped me out and has a wonderful professional attitude? He was so pleasant and efficient, I even got my business taken care of in less than 10 minutes. I'd give him 5 stars alone.
But this office in general is getting 2 because of steps 1-11 and the 2.5 hour wait, dated 1970s facilities, and horrible/un-clear signage and directions.
Kudos to that helpful guy who actually made sense when he talked, answered my questions, was thorough and polite, and he gave great service. The SS Administration should re-examine some of its other personnel and see if they're performing up-to-par instead of abusing their "power".
To avoid the long lines and repeat trips, be sure to have your proper documentation (i.e. actual birth certificate, and current driver's license, current passport). Observe the rules above, and try coming early in the morning during the middle of the week. Good luck! read more
