I was expecting to have the experience be dry and devoid of human contact (and honestly, to probably go wrong--likely through my own failures to follow instructions well). However, I received the kindest voicemail message from Eric on my cell. Letting me know where/when my materials were and what to expect next, and at the end he even congratulated me on my marriage. Ellain did not know what she was doing and very authoritative and nasty during the phone conversation. Even after reviewing my record, Ellain did not figured out what the case was about kept talking long about things that are not needed at length. When I excused myself to address her the reason for my call, she yelled at me saying YOU HAVE AN ATTITUDE. She was overreacting and argumentative. Ellain wanted to be called MS. Ellaine. Since what she was saying was not true, I fed her the information I got from talking to an Social Security Officer. She then nitpicked saying the person I talked on the phone was he not her instead of focusing of the matter of importance.   Ellain should learn knowledge and manner necessary to better serve public and instead of fattening her ego and hunger for power. read more

Went to this local office to apply for Medicare and later to submit paperwork for my father's estate. When learned there had been an error in my original application re: requested start dates, called the main SSA phone # after hours, who gave me the name of the person processing my application and the direct office #, assuring me it could be fixed. When made the follow-up call, the person answering the phone was very gracious, confirmed the needed changes required and took care of it. Was very grateful for everyone's help and the quick resolution. This week, when an issue came up with my father's estate, called their office, where they explained what paperwork was needed and finished the process in person today. A great waste of taxpayer money. I met the criteria for getting a replacement SS card off the website, but it doesn't allow it and tells me to use my local office. That is closed due to lockdown. I call the 800 # and wait 1 hour and 20 minutes. The person who answers doesn't even let me get through my questions, and hangs up. What fresh hell is this? Are we allowed to NOT pay our taxes, or is expecting government leeches to do their job for their pay? Why do they not have a chat option? Why am I paying these peoples salaries? How do I file a complaint on someone who doesn't identify themselves? If the employees aren't going to work, can we fire them and ones that do? I believe theres is a bout 30% unemployment rate currently and they absolutely can be replaced (and should be). read more

I never knew there was a social security office here, silly me I always went to the boston location because it was Boston and that sounded more official. The ssa.gov website is very useful, all the information is there. Parking was the only pain, there are two hour parking spots in front of the office but its limited. We couldn't find any meters around; lots of off street parking with no signs other than tow zone area but people still parked there which was confusing, 9:07 check in ( there's a touch screen machine to get your number and check in). 9:20 called my number 9:28 done!!! I thought it went by pretty quickly and it was very efficient. Offices are opened at 9am so I would suggest just arriving exactly at 9 so you don't have to wait too long. Just wow. Waited for 1h15m to get through on the phone (since one can't come in person, mind you). It took 4 instances of being put on hold and disconnected 3 of those times. When I finally did reach a person, she was so rude and condescending, I can honestly say I'd never experienced anything quite like it from a government official. A number of completely undeserved and gratuitous snarky comments, not letting me explain the problem, interrupting me throughout and ultimately not solving my problem. This SSA office gives a bad name for all branches of government offices. I came here to change my name on my social security card and was so disgusted by the way it operates. There is no one in the lobby to help you just an automatic kiosk to check in. The majority of people who were coming into this office were elderly and did not speak English as their first language I watched them be extremely confused with no one to help them. At one point a very elderly man asked the security guard a question. At no fault of his own, the security guard was unable to answer the question and told the man to wait and take a seat. The poor confused man tried to go behind the security guards desk and sit only to get yelled at. No one had any idea what was going on, people were restless and started yelling at the security guard wondering when they'd be called. I sat there for 1 1/2 hours waiting and then an alarm went off. Great. The entire building had to evacuate with no explanation. By this point the mayhem was too much to handle and I left. I had to park a bit away since there is no parking nearby this office. By the time I drove past it twenty mins later everyone was still outside evacuated out of the building. I wasted my time and remain with my old name on my social security card. I will find an office somewhere more remote to try again after i get over the trauma of this experience. Woof. read more

Pros: The experience at this office itself was good. The security guard was friendly. Waiting area was adequate. The staff at the desk itself were efficient. I walked from Alewife station - not too bad of a walk. Cons: Took longer than expected. I wanted to re-apply for my SSN. I went on a Monday at 1:45 pm. I was out by 3pm. The people at the office and the people who you can call in for general SSN information do not have the same knowledge. If the people who answer the phone are not sure about a particular answer, they should forward the question/concern to someone who is. Time is valuable for everyone - government employees and people who call in. My SSN hadn't arrived and when I called in the office, they kept telling me to wait for it, without advising me that the job would be done if I could just walk in. When I walked in (fed up of waiting), the job was done in 10 mins, with 1 hour 5 minutes of wait (which is basically the amount of hold time for a phone call anyway). read more

Time to open this place back up fully. Some of the workers are not doings their job. I sent in an appeal in June due to disability payment being lowered the worker counted someone else's income. I sent in the correct amount until now it has not been corrected it has been over 60 days. Some at this office are not following procedure and helping those with disabilities by doing the right thing. They are quick to lower but not correct their mistake and give you the payment amount you are entitled to. read more

Wow, what can I say. Your tax dollars at work! Stopped in to get a replacement social security card for one of the kids. Small waiting area with amazing ambiance. You while away the time soothed by the strains of electro-jazz fusion and the aroma of feet and other bodily emissions. Fortunately, regardless of what the signs say you can use your mobile device, so long as you stay quiet to avoid disturbing the friendly security guard (which seems to be a part time gig since he disappeared partway through our stay) Check in was an amazing experience at the vintage kiosk, so long as one DOES NOT TOUCH the printer. I considered touching the device but was afraid of the possible repercussions of a federal offense. We were in and out fairly quickly by government standards, about an hour. The workers are friendly, and professional. Their life energy has yet to be crushed by decades of civil service like their counterparts at the Watertown Registry of Motor Vehicles. read more

Came here on a Friday morning for a replacement SS card. Although the security guard technically is not employed by the SS office (maybe by a private security company?), he was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful to everyone who came in. I actually first came a couple of months ago, and thanks to the guard on duty (different guy at the time) I was saved from waiting in vain as he looked over my paperwork and pointed out that I was missing a certified copy of a document from the courthouse. Arrived at a few minutes past 10:00, got a number from the automated kiosk, and was called a little over an hour later. I expected to wait around this time or longer as I did not have an appointment. The waiting area is pretty big and the atmosphere isn't hectic with clearly frustrated patrons like other government offices (courthouse, DMV/RMV). The girl at the window processed my paperwork in less than 5 minutes and told me to expect the new card in the mail within 2 weeks. Was pleasantly surprised that it arrived exactly 1 week later, as government offices tend to LAG on sending paperwork (or doing anything for that matter). If only all offices could do their jobs this smoothly. Only downside is street parking is a bit limited and there is no private lot, but I was able to get a metered spot both times I was here. read more

This Social Security Office is run very smoothly. A security guard checks you in, gives you a number, and searches your bag. You then sit and wait in the waiting area for as long as it takes for your number to be called. I waited maybe 7 minutes on a quiet Friday morning. The staff were nice and efficient. The seating is ample and the waiting area is quiet. There is some parking on Fawcett Street, make sure not to park in any of the private lots on the street though. read more

The worst ever. Go anywhere but here. My infant daughter has had an application for a social security number pending here for FIVE MONTHS. I haven't received any phone calls that anything is wrong or missing. It's just not going through. The national office shows nothing pending and told me to reapply, but when I went to the Waltham office somehow they can see an application started with the Cambridge branch. Going in for the third time in five months with an baby today... not happy. Ps-none of the offices I've been to have changing tables in their cavernous bathrooms either. Then the field office manager processed my new social card with the wrong name that didn't even match the new name on my clearly printed paperwork. Now I have to go through the process again, but this time I don't have supporting paperwork because they gave me the wrong name. read more

Didn't realize davis sq office was close until I went to check the hours on the website. The office is smaller than davis sq AND there is only about less than 10 meter parking spots for the public. There is no public parking besides those ten meter spots. All the parking lot is for raytheon or resident parking only. read more

The Cambridge S.S office is very easy to get to once you fight the traffic. Its not in the middle of the city which makes it great. Here are something's I think are great about the Cambridge S.S office. You need to be in the doors by noon, because once it hits noon, they lock the doors from the outside so no more people walk in for appointments. This is to ensure that anyone in the office before noon gets to be seen. There are two things I did not like about the S.S office in Cambridge. Parking is meter parking only and there are maybe a dozen meters. It costs 25 cents per 15 minutes. I filled it with two dollars and was in there for less than an hour. Second issue is "Rambo" the security guard, he sits at the desk right inside the second door. I can only assume he just graduated from Wal-Mart Security School because he is aggressively loud telling each person to put their cell phone on vibrate and announcing that one person in the line at a time. In a small waiting room, his voice is very loud. read more

So, where to start? I just entered that building and was surprised, the waiting zone wasn't really so big as I imagined, I took my number from the check-in machine and the guardian just told me that I have to fill the form. I just wanna notice that the guardian was happy to help everybody, best guardian probably. Soo, I waited almost 2 hrs to get to the window... to be honest I expected to wait less than that(. My experience was awesome. The security guard was super friendly and helpful. The wait time was not very long. I went in to change my last name on my card. It took me less than 45 minutes from getting my check in number to walking out. It's free of charge for the new card and was super easy. They advised I will have my new card in one week. The girl who helped was very nice too. The only thing challenging was parking. There is metered parking but that was all filled up. I ended up parking a block over and just walked. read more

In this office all the staff is Korean and they bise not speaking English well give people attitude. I went there once with my daughter and the person who attended us never allowed me to speak. Her behavior frustrated my daughter who had to ask this person to have patience with me since English is not my first language. My daughter and I left the office very disappoitmented and call social security to headquarter to put a complaint. I hope some day the administration made better decision when hiring people. I guest Asian, Koreans are not the only people who receive social security. read more

Was pleasantly surprised this morning! Despite getting there exactly at 9am (got lucky with street parking), the waiting room was already 3/4 full. Despite that, I was in and out within 45 minutes! The security guard was pleasant and helpful, as was the woman who helped me figure out why my infant daughter's SS card hadn't gotten to us.
