This course is an extension of level 1. There was a bit of a gap between level 1 and level 2,…read moretherefore, a few weeks prior I had to give myself a refresher by doing some of the statements and trail balance sheets (Quickbooks does this for me, however, I needed to refresh myself on the mechanics). Arlene was my level 2 instructor. Her methods of teaching and assigning the homework differs than Jennifer's whom I had in level 1. It took me about 2 classes to get used to Arlene's teaching methods, however, over all I find her class a lot easier to navigate. The assignments aren't as labour intensive as level 1. Most of the assignments in level 2 are what I already did in level 1 with a few exceptions added. I've been less stressed in this class due to less official homework assigned. This has allowed me to take constructive notes and re-read the chapter during the week at my leisure. Most of the assignments and additional reading outside class time is about a 6 - 9 hour weekly investment. I don't have any children, marriage or distractions, therefore, I was able to accomplish this during the work week with an entire weekend for myself for extra practice above and beyond what is expected of me. Also studying on the bus helps. I found it helpful to xerox the chapter summarizes and would read those on the bus (without having to lug the whole text book with me). Level 1 was very focused on formatting that I missed the methodology. Arlene is very heavy on the "why we do this" rationality which paints a clearer picture of the book keeping process. The textbook used is the same as Level 1, however, 3 chapters are missing. Arlene gives you the xerox's of these chapters for you on day 1. Only 1/2 a chapter is really used from the original text book recommended. In other words the text book is almost useless after the 2nd class. The reason why Arlene gives you the chapters is 'cause Pearson's makes you pay an additional fee on top of what you already paid for the book just to access these on-line chapters which is not moral (I wrote a separate review on them). Unlike Jennifer's class, Arlene doesn't publish the answers to the practice questions in the assignment, however, she will advise and lead you in the right direction if errors were made on your hand in assignments. She doesn't mark so heavily on format unlike level 1 but more or less on the understanding of the process. She will grant you a re-do if she notices that you're struggling with the concept of a certain topic. She is very intuitive and is good about reading people's faces in class to determine if something is being understood or not. She bases this real time assessment in how she explains certain topics/examples. During the week when I had an assignment question or needed clarification she was good about answering her e-mails within a day or two. The cost of the class was $255 plus tax. You do not need any additional textbooks as you can use the same one as level 1. The workbooks are useless as there are plenty of templates on google. If you're password is still valid on the Langara site you can access your level 1 templates no problem. Here is where this class failed. The test. I have no issue with taking tests especially if it's a valid indication & assessment of what I've learned during those 6 weeks. The majority of the test is on partnerships and corporations which seems irrelevant considering that this has very little to do with the actual book keeping process itself. It's nice to have this information in your back pocket, however, with book keeping it's about the actual fundamentals and extensions of the process itself. More likely a book keeper isn't going to need to know or give a sh*t about the partnership and corporations portion. I studied a lot by reading the chapters, doing the self quizzes at the end of each chapter, doing the homework twice before handing it in as practice, re-writing my own notes based on the in class lesson(s) and made self quizzes for myself. I felt that the test was too heavily concentrated on something that in the real world would mean very little and left out important topics that needed to be quizzed like more expansion on

Reflecting on things I saw in Matthew's class years ago, and watching one of his latest lectures on…read moreYouTube, I cannot emphasize strongly enough how unhealthy his approach is. I wish I had known better and spoken up regarding the emotional trauma he put some of my classmates through years ago, but being younger and a green actor, I didn't have the experience or confidence to do so. Now I do. The guy's MO is to present himself as a master teacher of acting and observer of human behaviour. He'll give long lectures about how complicated life is and how there's no light without dark, dark without light. And this cuts to the strangest, overly obsessed part of his teaching: He'll encourage you to share your deepest darkest fears/secrets/whatever, and tell you how big and strong that will make you. And I guess a better actor..? He says in his 2019 lecture, speaking specifically about getting people to go to that deepest/darkest place that "it's impossible, you can't break your psyche." Well, "breaking" or not, he's certainly reckless with people's psyches. And he has no psychological training/qualifications on how to create a safe space for any person to drudge up some kind of emotional trauma. It is dangerous. It's sad that he's obviously the same teacher who's destructive methods I saw years ago. And beyond all that, I can say now through experience in life and as a professional actor, that you can find a class where beautiful, rich, and compelling work is done...free of all this pseudo psychological bs. Acting by nature will always call on you to draw on your experience and imagination in different capacities...that's part of the fun. Yeah it can be challenging work, but it's fun. And, it's not about YOU. No one cares about what your personal deepest darkest hardships are or aren't, they care about your character--what's your character doing/going through. It's not an esoteric, vocation in the stars. You show up to set, there are a hundred people doing their jobs there to make the story happen, you do your best with your part, and you go home to your life. And make that life beautiful. If you feel like you want to discuss your personal blocks, work through emotional trauma, etc, find a trained professional that can take you through that safely and with actual care. Not with an agenda to make you be as emotionally exposed as THEY think you should be. Find a class that respects your privacy, challenges you in the context of the craft, not personally, and makes you feel welcome and safe; and accept nothing less. Cheers out there.

In the past, maybe due to uninspiring projects (what's so popular about making pyjamas?!) or boring teachers, I've never really followed up and taken up the hobby of sewing. I wanted to give it another try and I was lucky this time around with Carley at SewGood. I was looking for a sewing class in my area, and SewGood fit the bill. On top of that, her website is very well made, and filled me with confidence when deciding to take one of her classes. I once again chose the absolute beginner class, "level 1" not wanting to skip ahead and then realizing I've forgotten how to do a proper something or other. In this class, we learned how to make an elastic waist band skirt over the duration of four, three hour classes. Carley is an excellent teacher, very warm and welcoming, and definitely knows her stuff. She made learning easy for myself and for the absolute beginners in the class as well. Her work space is perfect, suited for four people (the max class size) and stocked with everything you could possibly need (including some warm tea when you're in the mood!). Initially, I had some misgivings about the project itself, not being much of a skirt-wearer, but happy that at least it wasn't pyjamas. However, the skirt has turned out very nicely, and Carley helped all of us make certain alterations to each of our patterns (particularly in the length department). The end result is a skirt I will actually wear our in public! I took it home last night after our last class, paired it with a cute brightly colored top and a wide belt (admittedly, the elastic waist band is a little juvenile if you tuck your shirt in and go as is) and it looks like a nice, store bought skirt. I'm definitely looking forward to signing up for Carley's next class, Level 2, where we learn how to make a more fitted pencil skirt. She has so many project ideas and is open to suggestions if there is enough interest. For the beginner, intermediate or experienced sewer, I would definitely recommend Carley's Sew Good classes.

Carley is an excellent teacher and such a friendly welcoming person. In her beginner classes Carley makes sure you know the basics including how to take body measurements, how to use a commercial pattern, information about different types of fabrics and how to choose the appropriate one as well as how to lay out and cut your fabric. She also ensures that you are knowledgeable about the basics of a sewing machine and how to use certain tools. Carley is willing to answer any questions you have along the way and she is very helpful in doing so. Once you have taken a few of her classes you will have learned anything you will ever need to know about sewing, allowing you to produce your own garments at home! With Carley's help I have built a successful portfolio and have been accepted into Kwantlen's program. I sincerely recommend Carley at SewGood if you are interested in learning to sew!
