South Side

This wee café came to my attention through twitter (they followed me, I decided I needed to visit =…read moreso simple!). Even though I'm a south sider, I don't really visit this area very often so I don't know what it replaced but it's a lovely, cosy space - couches, tables, lots of space and very bright inside. I was warmly welcomed and shown the menu and told what was available today. I was there in the afternoon which meant they'd sold out of quite a bit of stuff - but that shows they're popular and making stuff fresh, which is great! I ended up ordering the full breakfast (£4.95) and asked for the black pudding and beans to be left off. It didn't take long (even though it was freshly cooked) and was a generous plate of food. I loved the roasted tomatoes, bacon and sausage which were all lovely. I don't really like scrambled egg but overall it was a tasty breakfast which was just the afternoon perk I needed. I stayed for a while doing some work and they kindly offered me their wifi code which was nice. The owners are really lovely folk who really want to make their customers comfortable and well looked after which I appreciated. As the name says, there is a huge range of cakes too but I didn't try any on this visit. I'll be back soon though as I want to try their soup!

Finally got round to "sitting in" and boy was it worth it. Great playlist- I'll forgive them the…read moreVan Morrison and Fleetwood Mac for the Creedence Clearwater Revival and Cream. The day's soups were spinach and lentil, and chorizo and tomato which was more of a stew. The spinach and lentil was delicious, rib sticking thick and tasty, tasty. My chicken salad sandwich on thick wholemeal contained proper roast chicken. The accompanying side salad had a balsamic dressing and included ribbons of carrot along with the usual ingredients. I usually view coleslaw in cafes with suspicion as they are often sour and vinegary and come straight out of a catering pack. This coleslaw was made on the premises tasting of fresh veg and creamy mayonnaise. Regulars popped in and out, on first name terms with the soup man and cake lady confirming this wee cafe's role in the community. Oh and the coffee was great as well.

We went here for some food last Saturday and I hate to admit that I was quite disappointed. The…read morecups of tea were tiny, cinnamon bun dry - only the soup was very good (courgette, pea?). I'd love to try out their bagels/paninis but wouldn't come back for a coffee (even though their cups are insanely cute).

Whack a wee piece of fruit onto the side and you have yourself lunch for 3 of your earth pounds... AWESOME! I plonked myself inside for a spot of lunch and initially cursed the fact that I had to perch myself on one fo the stools by the window. Now usually I have the fear taht these chairs are either going to break under me (damn you CM role for my growing gut!) or, I'm suddenly going to get dizzy and tumble to my demise from the heady height of 2ft (or whatever height it is). But wait! 'Dem stools is sturdy with a capital woooft. Next time your in, just try to pick one of them up... to hell with the funny looks as you stride past the counter and announce that you shall now ' pick up one of your stools... for Yelp has spoken (Disclaimer: Yelp does not take responsibly for any of the suggestions made by its Community Manager, or indeed for any legal / medical actions taken by the state post actions). I enjoyed my lunch here today so much, that I had to immediately log on to write this review…read more Bonningtons is nicely situated on Clerk Street, very easy to find. The welcome is great- staff members are friendly and chatty, and the sandwich selection is excellent. Mary had a sandwich of the day, which was a vegan sandwich with avocado, asparagus, aubergine etc. She really liked it. I had a chicken sandwich, with some salad items and cheese. Both were absolutely delicious, toasted to perfection. Mary also had a green tea and I had coffee, and those were nice as well. We were pleasantly surprised to get some free chocolate buttons with the drinks! These people know how to get to my heart. The place is quite small inside, with only a few seats, including a nice sofa by the window. An odd thing that I noticed is that when buses pass by outside, the place darkens considerably. Not a negative- just something that kept grabbing my attention! Prices are pretty good overall. Hot drinks are around £2 to £2.50. I was almost tempted by the soup and sandwich deal for £5 (sandwich alone tends to be between £3 and £4). Not bad for a lunch. I'll certainly be back, because the sandwiches are excellent, the level of toasting is just right, and I like the friendly staff as well. Recommended.
