Hands down, one of the best places to get wine in Broad Ripple. A friend of a friend told me about this place and prior to going for the first time, I had always just driven past it, thought absolutely nothing of it. While I have only been there once, I can speak on the wine. If you get on their email list, you will get emails about wine sales, wine liquidations, tasting and so much more. I received an email at the end of October and after looking at the list of wines on sale, I couldn't pass it up. I ordered about 11 bottles of wine, high quality mix of reds and whites at unbeatable prices. I placed the order online, and not long I received a phone call saying the order was ready for pick up. Chris one of the managers was so kind, took my credit card number and I showed up a few hours late. The wine was boxed up and the gentleman carried the wine to my car. Top notch service! Could not love this place more. They are always so helpful when you are looking for something specific, like a bottle of wine, or a bottle of scotch, that is great but kinda flies under the radar. They always ask what your price range is which is always helpful when buying for a friend. Cash is always better here as you will get a better price but they do also accept cards. What I love is if you like something in particular that you have a hard time finding, they will do their best to find and order it for you. The best cider on earth, "Blackberry Wild" by CiderBoys did a limited release this fall and I could not find it anywhere--until I walked into SoBro Spirits. I will say this place isn't the cleanest and it's not in the best area so just be cautious and I wouldn't go once it's dark if you are a younger woman. An update is long overdue, but I'll make it short and sweet. They just got in some new Belgians. Not JCVD, but just as sexy. Kasteelbier Cuvée du Chateau, 750 ml for $3.99. If you can find this beer retail, this size will cost you around $15 bucks. Not even joking. You can also buy a case of 12 for $31 bucks, which comes out to about $2.58/bottle. Can't beat that with a Michael Jackson sequined glove crotch grab! I also was able to procure a nice little single hop IPA by the name of Simcoe. Oh how she dances on my tongue...and smells like pink grapefruit. If the dancers @ Babes Showclub smelled this good, I'd be broke. Simcoe is Cali born and bred, and she's got that 22 ounce hour glass figure. Simcoe is branded with a big "H" on the front, but that don't stand for Ho...oh no. It stands for "How am I going to explain to my wife this intoxicating perfume that is lingering on my breath?" Simcoe adultery can be had for less than $2/bottle. It usually retails for $7/bottle on up. Sure, your wife may take half your shit, but at least Simcoe can ease them lips. Pucker up. Cash only...unless you write checks. A-1 Liquors is by far the best liquor store I've found in Indianapolis. The selection is solid: not huge, but you can probably find everything you need and some beers you never knew existed. I found these reasonably priced Ethiopian beers there. They were pretty impressive actually. The main draw of A-1 liquors though is the price. Indianapolis has insanely overpriced liquor stores. From the warm beer at supermarkets to the massive Kahn's which hasn't passed any of its saving from buying in bulk onto consumers to the seedy Bottle Shoppe south of broad ripple, liquor in Indianapolis is insanely overpriced. Not so at A-1 liquors. For instance, a 24 case of high life in bottles will only run you 13.99. That's awesome. At the Bottle Shoppe, you'll pay like, 8 bucks for a 6 pack. God I hate the Bottle Shoppe. Anyway, that's what alcohol should cost. Hard liquor is similarly inexpensive. Also, the owners are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Just a great liquor store. Thank you for everything, A-1 liquors. Oh, and they take cash only, so like, hit up the Chase on Keystone and 52nd before you come here. Do you like to shop at Marshall's or TJ Maxx? Do you like hunting for hidden deals? If you do, A-1 is the place for you! The outside appears to most as a typical urban liquor store, but it's far from ordinary. A-1 does not accept credit cards, and as a result they do not have to pay transaction fees...because of this they're able to price lower than their competitors. A great example is a fifth of Crown Royal (my normal litmus test to check pricing). Crown normally runs $22.99 to $25.99, A-1 sells Crown for $19.99. The other secret of this little store is their huge section of discounted beers and wines. Most are off-season beers, or wines that are changing their labels or are excess inventory from other stores. A-1 acquires these deals from the big distributors like National Wine & Spirits or Ollingers, and large stores like Kahn's and 21st Amendment. read more

This review is based on my attendance at the SoBro Holiday Wine Event. The wine tasting was located in a back area (looked like a storage room). This was one of the best wine tastings I've been to in Indianapolis. I love wine so this was a great opportunity to try different brands. Everyone working the event was super friendly. They had wine glasses available for attendees. As well they offered bottled water and Red Steakhouse was available for tapas style food. I do wish they had pretzels available for attendees as well. The name changed from A1, but that seems to be the only thing that changed. This is the place to go for a good selection of cheap booze. They have all the favorites and some unique finds, too - which can make for a fun adventure. We found Pizza Beer there one time. It was $0.99 so we tried it, why not?! It was terrible by the way, but makes for a fun story! Last night I got a bottle of wine for $2.99 that was surprisingly pretty good! They don't take credit/debit cards, so come prepared with cash. They will also take a check. Everyone that works there is so nice and will joke around with you, help you find what you're looking for, or suggest something new to try. Not a fan of the new name, but I haven't noticed any other changes. SoBro Spirits still gets 5 stars from me. Their prices on beer are hands down the best in Indy (especially by the case). The staff are real down to earth hoosier folks and will go out of their way to order you beer if there's something you are looking for or recommend a beer, wine or liquor. It's relatively compact compared to the warehouse size of a place like Kahn's, but there is plenty of selection. Protip: Get on their mailing list. That is the key. Every month or so they will send you a list of their specials (no spam). How special those deals are! The deals are the best I have found in Indy. Buy your beer by the case and save big. Normally there are singles available of all the beers they are selling by the case in the cooler, so you can mix and match a six pack and then come back to buy a case(s) of the one(s) you liked. Cash only! They also have the lowest ATM fees I have seen ($1.25). The best beers/deals are on the back wall. They have some good deals on liquor as well (especially with some lesser known and significantly cheaper bourbons). read more

Can I walk here? Yes. Can I buy anything I want? Yes. Do they have the best selection of beer and cider? Yes. Yes all the way!! I love walking in and finding new favorites. I also love German beers and they have the normal imports and even some obscure, cheap, options. Cheap German beer is still better than most! You can pay in cash and save a little money, but if you pay in card that transaction fee falls to you. You just can't beat the choices. When you walk in you feel like everything with fall off the shelf, which can be interesting. The staff are chill and helpful. They have some things that no one else has. From free tastings to niche beers, this is the best neighborhood liquor store around. It's not really around much so it's hard to notice. I like that though. I can walk there without crossing major roads. I've never been disappointed by my visits. They've run out of my favorites but that's the way of the world. Beer selection and prices are the best I have ever seen. I think they may buy up whatever they can get on closeout for various reasons; end of season or nearing expiration. Regardless, if you like beer and want something that doesn't taste like water for $5 a six pack, this is the only place to go in the city. Hell, maybe in the country. Maybe in the universe. I just can't say. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it is a fire hazard, it is cash only, AND there are always cops parked outside especially on weekends. There is for certain a concealed firearm hazard by the shopkeepers and the clientele. They cater to the good the bad AND the ugly.
